  1. Another Al Cohn Story ... Al is on tour in Holland. He goes into a bar with a Dutch musician. The Dutch musician tells him the local brew is called Elephant beer. Al says - 'No thanks, I drink to forget'
  2. I bought the new CD yesterday after hearing it being played in HMV. I was struck by the voice, so obviously heavily influenced by Billie Holiday. I like it a lot although whether it is jazz or not is a moot point.
  3. I found it unreadable and did not even get as far as the part where he meets Louis.
  4. I have just received the Hill, Rivers and Young. The European versions are all copy protected
  5. Does anyone intermingle their CD's by Bill Evans and Yusef Lateef?
  6. Judas Pig I have seen a copy of this and it clearly states that 'Horace Silver' is a nom-de-plume. Subliminal or what?
  7. I was at the infamous Zappa concert. Luckily I was in the first house because , of course , the second house didn't happen. Back when it was just the Finsbury Park Astoria I saw one of the Beatle's Christmas Shows.
  8. I am wondering if the trumpet player is Alan Elsdon. Does anyone know?
  9. The clarinet player is Wally Fawkes, who for a long time was in Humphrey Lyttelton's band. He still plays regularly every Tuesday in a bar in London in Drury Lane.
  10. Apart from English Trad bands, my first real live jazz experience (at age 14) was John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman and Elvin Jones. This was two weeks after they had recorded "Live at the Village Vanguard". They were the support band !!! The headliner was Dizzy Gillespie with Leo Wright, Lalo Schifrin, Mel Lewis and I can't remember who on bass, Bob Cunningham?
  11. Thanks, Ghost of Miles. I wish I had seen that earlier mail. If I had, I would have it now.
  12. I think this subject came up in an earlier thread about Specialty Records. Anyway, Percy's output for Tangerine is now available from Rhino Handmade Just ordered mine
  13. Received mine today from Amazon UK. It looks like a normal Mosaic box but for the moment I can't find the limited edition serial number. Sounds wonderful - I'm in heaven.
  14. Thanks very much
  15. Does anybody know whether the version of "Bergundy Street Blues" by George Lewis with a vocal by Monette Moore is currently available on CD? Thanks
  16. Warne Marsh? is there a Warne Marsh proper box?
  17. Acker actually plays on one track of Van's last album 'Down the Road'. I think this is an outstanding VM album, much better than say 'Back on Top'
  18. Add Camille Howard to the list, who played with Roy Milton
  19. Don't forget that you can get Kid Ory's recipe for Red Beans and Rice from his album 'The Legendary 'Kid'' on the Good Time Jazz Label.
  20. There is , unfortunately , an error on the Hodges set as well. The second CD is called 'Day Dream', 'Day Dream' is listed in the discography and it is discussed in the text. However it is not in the track listings and is not on the disks.
