  1. There are some interesting reviews of the European copy-controlled version of 'Dial S for Sonny' on the blue note website. Apparently is is practically unplayable. I have a TOCJ of this which is in mono. Does anyone know why it was issued in Japan in mono when a stereo version was available? I guess I will have try to get a US copy.
  2. How much for Cosmic Music??? Maybe I should cash in. Only joking.
  3. Saw the Miracles on the old Steel Pier in Atlantic City in 1968. Surely Donald Byrd is of a slightly older generation - after all he was in New York from 1955... I think it's most unlikely he knew Smokey. I read recentlythat Smokey has just made a gospel album -- Any one heard it?
  4. I believe the ring-leader on this was Marlowe Morris. I would love to hear it, Theloneliest Plunk and all ...
  5. I guess this won't help much either but I do not think this phenomenon is limited to Spector. I feel the same way about Stax 45's and their LP/CD issues/reissues. The Sam and Dave CD reissues sound terrible compared to the 45's Also, if you have only heard the LP or CD version of 'Let me come on home' by Otis, you will never know how wonderful it really is.
  6. These are the classic Victor sessions recorded between 1937 and 1940. There are many sessions with greatly differing personnels ove the 4 year period. Classic stuff.
  7. Another Al Cohn Story ... Al is on tour in Holland. He goes into a bar with a Dutch musician. The Dutch musician tells him the local brew is called Elephant beer. Al says - 'No thanks, I drink to forget'
  8. I bought the new CD yesterday after hearing it being played in HMV. I was struck by the voice, so obviously heavily influenced by Billie Holiday. I like it a lot although whether it is jazz or not is a moot point.
  9. I found it unreadable and did not even get as far as the part where he meets Louis.
  10. I have just received the Hill, Rivers and Young. The European versions are all copy protected
  11. Does anyone intermingle their CD's by Bill Evans and Yusef Lateef?
  12. Judas Pig I have seen a copy of this and it clearly states that 'Horace Silver' is a nom-de-plume. Subliminal or what?
  13. I was at the infamous Zappa concert. Luckily I was in the first house because , of course , the second house didn't happen. Back when it was just the Finsbury Park Astoria I saw one of the Beatle's Christmas Shows.
  14. I am wondering if the trumpet player is Alan Elsdon. Does anyone know?
  15. The clarinet player is Wally Fawkes, who for a long time was in Humphrey Lyttelton's band. He still plays regularly every Tuesday in a bar in London in Drury Lane.
  16. Apart from English Trad bands, my first real live jazz experience (at age 14) was John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman and Elvin Jones. This was two weeks after they had recorded "Live at the Village Vanguard". They were the support band !!! The headliner was Dizzy Gillespie with Leo Wright, Lalo Schifrin, Mel Lewis and I can't remember who on bass, Bob Cunningham?
  17. Thanks, Ghost of Miles. I wish I had seen that earlier mail. If I had, I would have it now.
  18. I think this subject came up in an earlier thread about Specialty Records. Anyway, Percy's output for Tangerine is now available from Rhino Handmade Just ordered mine
  19. Received mine today from Amazon UK. It looks like a normal Mosaic box but for the moment I can't find the limited edition serial number. Sounds wonderful - I'm in heaven.
  20. Thanks very much
  21. Does anybody know whether the version of "Bergundy Street Blues" by George Lewis with a vocal by Monette Moore is currently available on CD? Thanks
  22. Warne Marsh? is there a Warne Marsh proper box?
  23. Acker actually plays on one track of Van's last album 'Down the Road'. I think this is an outstanding VM album, much better than say 'Back on Top'
  24. Add Camille Howard to the list, who played with Roy Milton
  25. Don't forget that you can get Kid Ory's recipe for Red Beans and Rice from his album 'The Legendary 'Kid'' on the Good Time Jazz Label.
