  1. As OliverB also mentions Stan Kenton, I believe he just mistakenly said Columbia when he meant Capitol.
  2. Nathan Davis was in the Paris Reunion band so you might want to look out for their stuff. I saw the Paris Reunion band at a festival in England in 1985. I can remember Nathan Davis, Johnny Griffin, Woody Shaw, Jimmy Woode, not sure who else.
  3. I have this on CD and also have all these Alvin Robinsons on singles. Red Bird Sound volume 2 Unfortunately, as you can see, it is no longer available. Were there more than 8 tracks on Red Bird/Blue Cat? What were the titles?
  4. I was at the Walthamstow show as well, second or third row. First house as I had to get to bed early because I was only fourteen at the time. JC, Eric, McCoy, Reggie and Elvin opening for Dizzy, Leo Wright, Lalo Schifrin, Mel Lewis and ... Who the hell was the bassist, was it Bob Cunningham?
  5. I don't think ACE will be reissuing any RedBird/BlueCat material. In England , this currently seems to be in the hands of Snapper (the record lable previously known as Charly). They recently issued a 3-CD set of this material including about 5-6 Alvin Robinson tracks.
  6. In my opinion, 'Live at the Regal' is highly overrated. In particular I do not like the way he segues from tune to tune on this album. The Modern singles are infinitely preferable. 'Singin the Blues' in this series is more or less a collection of his early singles and is highly recomended. There are also two other collections on Ace of his early and later singles which are very good buys. These are 'The RPM Hits' and 'The Best of the Kent Singles' Then there is the 4 CD box ...
  7. Absolutely right, it's not worth buying now. But 40 years ago, it was VERY difficult to pick up BB King records in England and we had to take what we could find.
  8. I don't mind it either. I have it on Kent as well. It introduced me to 'Baby look at you' which is one of my favourite BB tracks.
  9. The 10 already issued are :-- The Great BB King The Blues Singin the Blues More BB King Easy Listening Blues Blues in my heart The Soul of BB King King of the Blues BB King Wails My Kind of Blues You upset me baby,Woke up this morning and Please Love me are all on Singin the Blues
  10. Not quite what this thread is about but interesting never the less .... I met 'Daphne' as in the Django tune, a few years ago. I believe she is still alive and living in my neighbourhood, that's Wimbledon in London.
  11. Coincidentally, I happened to listen to 'My Kind of Blues' this morning. I bought this in the sixties in England on the Ember label and hated it. Of course it is actually a wonderful session and the ACE CD does it proud. I now realise that the Ember LP was a travesty and completely unlistenable, far worse than any cheap Crown LP. Lloyd Glenn and BB are both wonderful on it. I might be wrong but I think this was the only occasion when BB set out to record a whole LP during his time at Modern.
  12. There are actually two more to go, they have issued ten already. The other two are 'Twist with BB King' and 'BB King sings Spirtuals' 'Twist' contains quite a few duplicates already issued in this series so it will be interesting to see what Ace do with it. No news on when they will come out.
  13. It's the first vinyl I've bought in 20 years.
  14. To answer the original question, I purchased the first four Andrew Hill albums as they were issued in the sixties - Black Fire, Judgement, Point of Departure and Smokestack. Andrew! and Compulsion were impossible to find in England at the time and I never did buy them on LP. Although I loved all four of them (Smokestack somewhat less so), I have to say that Judgement was my personal favourite. I just loved the feel of the music and it was the first time I had heard Bobby Hutcherson, who was a revelation. Sieite Ocho is a great opening track but I was impressed with the whole album. When I did eventually hear Andrew!, I was quite dissapointed. IMO It sounds like a retread of Judgement. I've still got time to get to appreciate it more though.
  15. A 'Kind of Blue' remake 'Kind of New' by Donald Harrison on Candid. Very good IMO, but I am a big DH fan.
  16. Thanks for the AAJ suggestion. I had been looking there but I was thrown by the fact that there was a thread specifically about the Fontana releases where no one had posted since they actually came out. The discussion you mention is in a different thread about British jazz releases in general. Thanks again.
  17. Does anyone have any of the new Tubby Hayes reissues on Fontana? If so, could you comment on the recording quality. There are stories that at least one of them is a needle drop. Thanks
  18. I bought 8 of these in HMV. There doesn't seem to be anything dodgy about these at all They look like perfectly respectable issues to me. I wouldn't compare them to the Spanish Blue Notes in any way.
  19. I have 'From Hackensack to Englewood Cliffs' by Ike Quebec and I am curious why the last 2 tracks on that CD are not on the new double. These are 'Cry me a River' and "Uptight' Did they fall outside the remit, was this not a '45 session' Does anyone have any idea?
  20. Pedantic note - It was, of course, Lucille Bogan. Louise Bogan is someone else entirely.
  21. I agree with Lon, I think the sound on this is spectacular. Unfortunately I prefer Yusef when he is in 'straight ahead' mode. There is too much 'noodling' on this for me.
  22. The three additional tracks on the Jimmy Smith. Does anyone know if they have been available before?
  23. Gatemouth brown
  24. Chris's link has it that Nina Buck and the Palm Court band are fine. No mention of George though.
  25. I heard that Allen Toussaint was possibly at the Superdome. Does anyone have any more recent information?
