  1. Jackie Cain & Roy Kral - Sweet and Lowdown (Columbia, 1960) Vocal - Jackie Cain Piano and Vocal - Roy Kral Alto Sax and Flute - Anthony Ortega Guitar - Barney Kessel Vibraphone - Larry Bunker Bass - Al McKibbon Drums - Frank Butler
  2. Booker Ervin - Back from the Gig (Blue Note, released 1976) I'm listening to the second LP in this set, recorded in 1968 and issued on CD in 2005 as Tex Book Tenor. Excellent stuff.
  3. Now playing: The MPS Rhythm Combination & Brass - Power Play (MPS/BASF, 1973) In Germany, this album was released as a 2-LP set. The version of Power Play released in the U.S. was abridged to a single disc. I have the U.S. version (unfortunately), which, in addition to having fewer tracks, almost certainly sounds less impressive AQ-wise than German pressings. [Sigh.] OTOH, something is better than nothing. 😜
  4. I think you'll thoroughly enjoy both of those, T.D.!
  5. Speaking of Famous Door, this is another Doozy: It features Hank Jones and Papa Jo Jones on side 1 and Jimmy Rowles and Donald Bailey on side 2.
  6. Now spinning: Various Artists - The Panassié Sessions (RCA Victor, rec. 1938-39) Sidney Bechet!!! Glorious Mal.
  7. Found these two LPs earlier today at a local shop: and
  8. I'm familiar with what you're describing with some DG vinyl. I think the CD issue does indeed sound better.
  9. I love it. Sounds great too. I am a fan of Rafael Kubelik's conducting in general.
  10. NP: David Liebman Quintet - Doin' It Again (Timeless, rec. 1979) with Terumasa Hino, John Scofield, Ron McClure, and Adam Nussbaum
  11. Next up: Ross Tompkins and Good Friends (Concord, 1978) with Al Cohn, Monty Budwig, and Nick Ceroli Al Cohn elevates this date, making it something much better than ordinary. Now that you mention it, it does indeed look like a sticker.
  12. Now spinning: Harold Mabern - Rakin' and Scrapin' (Prestige, rec. 1968) OJC LP reissue Very cool. That particular line-up -- with Mraz & Foster -- only lasted for one album. Beginning with their second LP, Quest II, the bassist was Ron McClure and the drummer was Billy Hart. I've never had a chance to see Quest live, but I did see Liebman & Beirach as a duo at Mezzrow back in 2019.
  13. Quest [D. Liebman, R. Beirach, G. Mraz, A. Foster] - Quest (Trio JP/Palo Alto Jazz, 1982)

  16. Dave Holland Quintet - Seeds of Time (ECM, 1985)
  17. Next up: Oscar Peterson Trio + One Clark Terry (Mercury, 1964)
  18. From Baden Powell to another exceptional Brazilian guitarist: Laurindo Almeida with Salli Terri, a.o. - Duets with the Spanish Guitar, Album 3 (Angel) Originally released as For My True Love (Capitol, 1959)
  19. Next up: Baden Powell - Face au Public (Barclay FR, 1972) Recorded 5-6 October 1970, Sankei Hall, Tokyo
