  1. Yeah, that article is terrific. How I would have loved to hear Byard play piano duets with Ellington! That would have been SOMETHING! Also, I had no idea about Byard's early connection with the Adderley brothers. Very interesting.
  2. Ironically, Rahsaan looks the most comfortable. He's got him a walking stick. He's ready! OTOH, Tommy Flanagan looks the most out of place. "The woods?!? Get me outta here!" Now playing:
  3. I'm listening to this now too. 😎
  4. Sorry to hear of his passing. R.I.P.
  5. El Gigante del Teclado!
  6. Welcome Jack! I agree, jazzbo. J&R's voices and arrangements work very well with vibes.
  7. Next up: Rod Williams - Hanging in the Balance (Muse, 1989) I dig this. Rod Williams' compositions are interesting, and the Marty Ehrlich - Graham Haynes front line sounds really good.
  8. Nice! I've never seen Watson perform. Hope to rectify that some day. re: Post Motown Bop -- I love that record too. It might even be my "desert-island pick" for Watson.
  9. Bobby Watson & Horizon - The Inventor (Blue Note, 1990) IMO, Watson's music has an irresistible, swaggering charisma about it.
  10. Digging the new look & feel. Another big THANK YOU to JIM for keeping this terrific digital meeting place up-and-running!
  11. My entries for the last two weeks: - The Muhal Richard Abrams Orchestra - Hearinga Suite (Black Saint, 1989) - Geri Allen, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian - In the Year of the Dragon (JMT/Winter & Winter, 1989) - Art Farmer - Ph.D. (Contemporary, 1989) - Claudio Roditi - Slow Fire (Milestone, 1989) - The Jimmy Giuffre 4 - Liquid Dancers (Soul Note, 1991) - Rod Williams - Hanging in the Balance (Muse, 1989) My 1980s Jazz project with my buddy Dan Robey is winding to a close. There's about one month remaining, since we're scheduled to conclude in mid-December. I'm disappointed that I haven't been able to write more this year. For a variety of reasons, I just haven't had the energy or bandwidth. But I'm still happy to have taken on the project because I've discovered some outstanding, new-to-me music. And there's not many things better in this world than uncovering music that hits you right in the gut! ... By the way, Rod Williams' terrific-but-unheralded album Hanging in the Balance is one prime example of just such a discovery. As always, let me know what you think!
  12. Such a terrific album.
  13. More Woody Shaw:
  14. Prompted by some Woody Shaw discussion on another thread: Now listening to Love Dance (Muse, 1976), my favorite Woody Shaw album. Check out this insane band: Woody, Billy Harper, René McLean, Steve Turre, Joe Bonner, Cecil McBee (who is on fire!!!), Victor Lewis, and Guilherme Franco. Music bursting at the seams with vitality, totally "of it's time" but also timeless.
  15. Such a wonderful book! It's sitting on my desk right now.
  16. Yeah, I just saw that the other day. I have a perfectly fine CD version -- but I may plop for the vinyl regardless.
  17. MCA Impulse reissue Carter may be the leader, but Hawkins is the hero!
  18. Love that cover photo. Such a joyful laugh! In that photo -- with his bald head, round glasses and mandarin collar -- Lightsey looks a bit like Gandhi. Gandhi in a very happy place.
  19. I agree. All those records with Jimmy Rowles are primo Zoot! I think Cohn's most consistently interesting records are the Xanadu's -- most especially Play It Now and Heavy Love (Rowles again!).
