  1. I wish someone would compile the most interesting features from Coda in a book (or ebook). My vote for the title: A Coda Compendium. I'd buy it.
  2. Super write-up, Mark! They were one helluva band.
  3. From my Sunday afternoon record store run: I didn't do an especially good job of listening to 1980s vocal jazz while compiling my survey (although I did select a few). So I'm now digging in that sandbox a bit. Obviously, Roberta Flack and Ramsey Lewis don't fall into that category -- but they were in the dollar bin, so I grabbed 'em.
  4. Kral can rip my heart out. What a voice.
  5. Terrific story, Peter. Thanks for sharing that! Crazy Legs & Friday Strut !!!
  6. Talkin' John Scofield on another thread, so I pulled out this: I think this album is terrific.
  7. Yeah. Me too. I don't love everything he's done, but -- on the plus side -- he doesn't sound like anyone else. So many jazz guitarists trying to sound like Kenny Burrell or Jim Hall or Pat Metheny. Not Sco. He's got his own sound, instantly identifiable. Yeah, those Enja records are strong. Live with Richie Beirach. And Rough House. Oh yeah. IMO, there's a dip during Sco's time on Gramavision. But I think his stuff since then is (often) excellent. ... Just one dude's take. BTW, I've never heard JoeHen's So Near, So Far. I'm no help re: that particular record.
  8. Cal Tjader - Puttin' It Together: Recorded Live at Concerts by the Sea (Fantasy, 1974)
  9. More updates to "old" posts -- with newly-added commentary: - Billy Bang Quintet - Rainbow Gladiator (Soul Note, 1981) - Leandro "Gato" Barbieri - Gato... Para Los Amigos!! (Doctor Jazz/CBS Special Products, 1983) - The Ballad Artistry of Buddy Tate featuring the Ed Bickert Trio (Sackville, 1982) As always, I welcome your perspective, feedback, corrections, etc. Thanks!
  10. Coincidentally, I have that LP queued up for listening later tonight. It's one of the albums in my 80s jazz survey/blog -- but I didn't include any commentary when I posted it. (Too tired. Running behind at work. Blah, blah, blah.) So I need to listen again for inspiration before writing up my impressions. Any insights that you'd like to offer? I'd be happy to quote you.
  11. Two favorites from the 1980s: and plus more Ira Sullivan:
  12. Tonight, I've been updating some of my earlier blog posts that lacked commentary. If you'd like to take a look: - David Friedman - Of the Wind's Eye (Enja, 1981) - Red Rodney & Ira Sullivan - Spirit Within (Elektra Musician, 1982) Two excellent LPs. Ira Sullivan. Sheesh. That dude was ridiculous.
  13. Dipping into this treasure chest: The Duke Ellington Centennial Edition: The Complete RCA Victor Recordings (1927-1973) Disc 14 - Recordings from late-1944 and 1945, Ellington's first after the "Petrillo ban" ended Stylish design, for sure. ... Don't think I've ever seen that before. Thx for sharing.
  14. Dizzy Gillespie / Lalo Schifrin - The New Continent (Limelight, 1965) Lalo Schifrin : Dizzy :: Gil Evans : Miles
  15. Such a great record (and band). "Southern Smiles" !!!
  16. More Prez: Lester Young - Lester Swings (Verve, 2 LPs) recordings from 1945, 1950-51
  17. Now on my 'table: Lester Young - Mean to Me (Verve, 2 LPs) recordings from 1954 and 1955
  18. Scriabin: Piano Sonatas Nos. 1 & 2; Fantasia in B minor / Igor Zhukov (Angel/Melodiya)
  19. That's strange. I have plenty of CTI LPs, and I don't recall any issues like that. (However, I don't have that particular LP on vinyl.) Bummer.
  20. Ira Sullivan - Peace (Galaxy, 1979) The Richie Kamuca Quartet - Richie (Concord, 1977)
