  1. Next up: The Chick Corea New Trio - Past, Present & Futures (Stretch, 2001) with bassist Avishai Cohen and drummer Jeff Ballard
  2. Scenes - Along the Way (Origin, 2006)
  3. I like those two records a lot. They're among the earliest SteepleChase releases, aren't they?

    Hermeto Pascoal

I will definitely be getting this. Thank you for the heads-up!
  5. Earlier today, my wife and I re-watched Casablanca. It was the first time that we'd ever seen it on a BIG SCREEN in a movie theater. The big screen made a perfect movie even more perfect. The legendary line is "Here's looking at you, kid." But the lines that kill me come just before: "Who are you really? And what were you before? What did you do and what did you think?" Not much on paper, but Bogie makes them unforgettable.
  6. Along with Almost Like Me, folks who dig Odean Pope should check out Odean's List: STRONG stuff. All of her records from the late-70s and early-80s are off-the-chart good, IMO.
  7. Nope. I don't think he has connections to the music biz.
  8. Stepping back for a moment and making a general observation: I'm glad this forum exists. It's such a great place, with so much collective knowledge and wide-ranging interests. Every nook and cranny of jazz -- and then some! Can't help but learn a TON just by hanging out. O.K. Carry on.
  9. Gheorghe, Thanks for taking a peek at the blog. One note: The Joe Pass entry was posted by my project collaborator, Dan Robey. Over the course of the year, each of us are posting three albums per week.
  10. He had a long career and recorded prolifically. I have about 20 of his albums, and there's still a bunch I've never heard. Among my faves are two that Crawford co-led with Jimmy McGriff: Steppin' Up (Milestone, 1987) and Road Tested (Milestone, 1997). But there's a lot to hear. A good "problem" to have for us listeners!
  11. I enjoyed the Hank Crawford LP I played earlier so much that I pulled out another: Midnight Ramble (Milestone, 1983) Sometimes you gotta take one for the team.
  12. Hank Crawford - Indigo Blue (Milestone, 1983) I've never heard it. Sounds like I need to.
  13. Just a heads-up: I've now published all three of this week's albums on my blog with brief write-ups and sound clips. If you're so inclined, take a look.
  14. Yessir. Very. Among HC's best, IMO.
  15. I agree. An interesting thing: Around this same time, Sam Rivers was moving in similar sorta directions with electric instruments (definitely NOT fusion, for those who haven't heard it) -- for example, "Crosscurrent": Live At Jazz Unité on Blue Marge. ... But I think Odean's trio as heard on Almost Like Me is much more powerful. ... All influenced more or less by Ornette's harmolodic thing, I suppose. I'm thinking too of Blood Ulmer (with Blythe & George Adams), Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Lonnie Plaxico, et al. A definite thing in the 80s.
  16. Now streaming via YT: Sir Edward = Harold Vick Jazz Room (UK) is reissuing this LP on March 25th. Got my pre-order in at Dusty.
  17. This week's set: - Joanne Brackeen - Special Identity (Antilles, 1982) - Paquito D'Rivera - Mariel (Columbia, 1982) - Odean Pope - Almost Like Me (Moers, 1982) I've haven't posted these to the blog yet. I plan to do it tomorrow or Sunday. So this is a "preview."
  18. Treasures from Ellington's "stockpile": The Jaywalker: 1966-1967 (Storyville)
