  1. Poncho Sanchez - Conga Caliente (Concord Picante) Disc 1 - originally released as ¡Fuerte! in 1988
  2. Now on my turntable: John Carter - Dance of the Love Ghosts (Gramavision, 1987) Powerful music.
  3. Yes, great session. ... But I love Fischer's Manteca too.
  4. It's the Gerald Wilson hour on organissimo, apparently.
  5. Next up: Mike Wofford Plays Gerald Wilson: "Gerald's People" (Discovery, 1988) with Rufus Reid (b), Carl Burnett (d), and Richie Gajate-Garcia (perc)
  6. Michele Rosewoman & Quintessence - Contrast High (Enja, 1989)
  7. Paul Bley, Gary Peacock - Partners (Owl, 1991)
  8. Baikida Carroll - Shadows and Reflections (Soul Note, 1982) with Julius Hemphill, Anthony Davis, Dave Holland, and Pheeroan AkLaff
  9. I understand that these Panart Jam Sessions were the inspiration that prompted Al Santiago, founder of Alegre Records, to make the Alegre All Stars records. I wish Craft would do a similar sort of box set treatment for those Alegre All Star releases. I think they have a similar sort of underground reputation and deserve much wider exposure. ... But I guess you could say that about nearly everything that Charlie Palmieri did.
  10. Tico All-Stars - Descargas at the Village Gate Live (Tico/Vampi Soul, 1966) Whew. This is some intense music! And the crowd is going absolutely bonkers. Great stuff.
  11. I've heard good things about that one, kh. What do you think?
  12. NP: Ronnie Cuber - Live at the Blue Note (ProJazz, 1986)
  13. Whenever I see that album cover, I think of Teri Garr in Young Frankenstein. "Roll, roll, roll in the hay!" Tremendous, KB. One of his best, IMO.
  14. Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy new year!
  15. TtK, I love Schumann's music, and what you're describing doesn't ring any bells -- for me, at least. I'm no expert, but I'd wager that the "Americana"-like sounds you heard were the result of a particular pianist's interpretation, rather than something inherent in one of Schumann's compositions.
  16. Daniel, I like Sharing very much. It's nothing earth-shattering, but it is lovely -- a bit like Kloss' duo LP with Barry Miles a few years earlier, Together (Muse, 1976). Neither of these duo records are anything like his earlier Prestige dates. They're very gentle and reflective. Not nearly as "jazzy." Here's a taste:
  17. My friend and collaborator, Dan Robey, has published his first five posts on our joint blog: https://jazzinthe80s.blogspot.com - Terry Riley - Shri Camel (Columbia, 1980) - George Cables - Some of My Favorite Things (Atlas, 1980) - Pepper Adams - The Master (Muse, 1980) - John Clark - Faces (ECM, 1981) - Art Ensemble of Chicago - Urban Bushmen (ECM, 1982) All of Dan's posts feature interesting write-ups. Take a look!
  18. Now on my 'table: Sorta ECM-esque. I like that one.
