  1. Yes! With Andy Gonzalez, Steve Berrios, and Joe Ford, I suppose it's not surprising that some of Black Sand has a Fort Apache Band flavor. ... I didn't realize until recently that O'Connell sometimes subbed for Larry Willis in that group.
  2. Next up: Geri Allen - The Gathering (Verve, 1998)
  3. NP: Bill O'Connell Latin Jazz Project - Black Sand (Random Chance, 2001) I keep coming back to this disc again and again lately.
  4. Wish I could see that show! Have fun!
  5. NP: Bernard Purdie - Legends of Acid Jazz (Prestige) Originally released as two Prestige LPs: Purdie Good! (1971) and Shaft (1972) This music is WIDE OPEN style-wise, making for some expansive and uncategorizable deliciousness. ... Speaking of deliciousness, whatever happened to tenor saxophonist Charlie Brown? I've only ever heard him on these two Purdie LPs and Ceasar Frazier's 75 -- but he's got got a gritty, low-down, SOULFUL sound. I dig it.
  6. NOTHING wrong with those cuts. You could easily do a helluva lot worse! My mind immediately goes to this disc: Released on Milestone in 1975 -- just like Sonny's Nucleus.
  7. More Cannonball. Cannonball Adderley Sextet - Dizzy's Business (Milestone) Concert recordings from '62 & '63
  8. Very sad news. He was a wonderful musician. R.I.P.
  9. Cannonball Adderley - Sophisticated Swing: The EmArcy Small-Group Sessions (Verve, 1995) Disc 1
  10. Basie's small-group LPs for Pablo are so much fun.
  11. Happy Birthday to Hermeto Pascoal !!! NP: Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo - Só Não Toca Quem Não Quer (Only If You Don't Want It, You Can't Do It) (Som Da Gente / Intuition, 1987) Earlier: The Cannonball Adderley Quintet - Why Am I Treated So Bad! (Capitol, 1967) Both of these are FIVE-STAR records, in this listener's humble opinion.
  12. Hooray for Hermeto! Happy 85th! Will have to spin some of Pascoal's music today to celebrate the occasion.
  13. That is odd. Seems like Hawes has always had a solid (or even better) reputation.
  14. Disc 2 - originally released as The Sun Is Out
  15. Thanks sidewinder. More titles to add to the "To Get" list!
  16. Thank you, sir! The Ellington tribute caught my eye as well.
  17. I was just poking around on Dusty Groove, and I noticed that there's a big batch of Stan Tracey reissues due out soon. (I see that they were mentioned in this thread above.) All are being issued on the Resteamed label around July 1, 2021 (here in the U.S., at least). Titles on the DG website: - Child's Christmas Jazz Suite - Flying Pig - From Stan With Love (With Love From Jazz / We Love You Madly) - Later Works – Hong Kong Suite / Amandla Suite - Sound Check - Wisdom In The Wings (Free An One / Seven Ages Of Man) I've enjoyed some of Tracey's music -- (The Return of) Captain Adventure is a favorite -- but I'm unfamiliar with these reissues. Any thoughts or recommendations from Tracey-philes or others?
  18. Wow. That is amazing! NP: Michele Rosewoman and Quintessence - Contrast High (Enja, 1989)
  19. Still sticking with today's piano trio theme:
  20. "Soul on Soul" indeed!
