  1. In NYC for a few days. 😁 Last night: Richie Beirach & Dave Liebman at Mezzrow Jazz Club. It was a tremendous show. I stayed for both sets. I happened to sit at the same table with Lee Konitz during the first set, which made the night even more memorable. I also had a chance to chat briefly with Richie & Lieb afterwards. Will post some pix later. Tonight: Miguel Zenón Quartet at Jazz Standard.
  2. Prompted by soulpope's post above: Disc 1 - Brahms: Piano Works, Opp. 76, 116, and 117 / Dmitri Alexeev (EMI)
  3. Interesting. Never seen anything on the Gamma label before . . .
  4. Arthur Blythe - Focus (Savant, 2003) I love the sound of this ensemble -- with Tsilis' concert marimba (no vibes) and Stewart's tuba. Far from a garden-variety "alto with rhythm" date.
  5. I had no idea that record existed, never seen it before. And that's an impeccable rhythm section! Still more John Stowell . . . David Friesen, John Stowell - Other Mansions (Inner City, 1980)
  6. More John Stowell . . . David Friesen - Waterfall Rainbow (Inner City, 1977)
  7. Scenes [John Stowell, Jeff Johnson, John Bishop] - Along the Way (Origin, 2006)
  8. Just now noticing some times on this CD that Lewis Nash plays with an uncanny similarity to Connie Kay. A nice tip of the cap.
  9. John Taylor, Martin France, Palle Danielsson - Angel of the Presence (CAM Jazz, 2004) Is there anything better than piano trio in perfect equilibrium? Nothing is missing. It's a complete orchestra.
  10. Leon Parker - Awakening (Columbia, 1998) From a time -- not that long ago -- when the "major labels" were still playing in the jazz sandbox, releasing interesting music.
  11. Love that one.
  12. Me too!!! Back in the day, I was happily snapping up LPs when people were unloading them for CDs. Now, I'm doing the same -- except it's the other way around. πŸ˜›
  13. So good!!! Yes! Mine too! And Joe Chambers! Don't get no better than that!!! NP: Phew! Good stuff! I'm like a Blue Note record cover with all these exclamation marks!!! πŸ™‚
  14. with Steve LaSpina (b) and Jeff Hirshfield (d)
  15. Deliciously Charles Ives-ian in places.
  16. Oh yeah. An he's an excellent drummer. And it runs in the family -- since he's Roy Haynes' grandson. NP: Frank Kimbrough, Joe Locke - Saturn's Child (OmniTone) Almost inevitably (given the instrumentation), this is reminiscent of Chick & Gary Burton. A little less ECM-y though.
  17. This has been one of my favorites for a long time.
  18. I'd be more inclined to think that it speaks to the typical age of most forum members. πŸ˜‰
