  1. I think there's something slippery & elusive about New Rags, and I mean that both positively and negatively. ... I agree that it's not his best. The two LPs that came immediately after it -- New Directions and Special Edition -- are probably my favorites from DeJohnette-as-a-leader on ECM.
  2. Working from home today -- so I can spin some vinyl while I work. Earlier: The John Lewis Group - Kansas City Breaks (Finesse) with lovely flute work by Frank Wess Now: Jack DeJohnette's Directions - New Rags (ECM) with John Abercrombie (g), Alex Foster (ts, ss), and Mike Richmond (b)
  3. Clark Terry-Bobby Brookmeyer Quintet - Straight No Chaser (Mainstream, 1965) and Cal Tjader - Puttin' It Together (Fantasy, 1974)
  4. Both TREMENDOUS, imho. I happened to see Santana in concert a few weeks ago. He's still a very powerful musician.
  5. I really like that one. NP: Earlier:
  6. Oh yeah! I love their records with Booker. I only wish they'd made at least one trio record together. More BYARD please! . . . BTW, that rhythm section with Woods at the Frankfurt Jazz Fest is nothing to sneeze at either: Gordon Beck, Henri Texier, and Daniel Humair. They can burn with the best of 'em. Now this:

Ugh. Awful if KB is really experiencing this dire situation. Awful if this is a scam. Be cautious, folks.
  8. Pairing Dizzy with Basie may seem odd at first glance -- but they are locked in the moment the music starts. This is a great record.
  9. Yeah!!! You cannot go wrong with Cedar Walton.
  10. The Three [Joe Sample, Ray Brown, Shelly Manne] - S/T (Eastwind / Inner City, 1975)
  11. Lucky Thompson - I Offer You (Groove Merchant, 1973) with Cedar Walton, Sam Jones, and Louis Hayes Oh, man. This is gorgeous music.
  12. MJT + 3 - Branching Out (Trip Jazz) 2-LP set of material originally released on VeeJay
  13. Various Artists - Capitol Jazz Classics, Vol. 6 (Capitol) A recent dollar-bin find. Good stuff.
  14. Two great records, IMO.
