  1. Such a great record! One of Cannonball's best, IMO.
  2. NP: Earlier: Excellent.
  3. Duke Ellington - Duke's Joint (Buddha) Duke Ellington & Count Basie - First Time! (Sony Legacy)
  4. Duke Ellington - New York Concert: In Performance at Columbia University (MusicMasters Jazz) It's always fun to hear Duke in a trio setting.
  5. LPs I've been spinning today: Bill Barron - The Next Plateau (Muse) Benny Carter & Dizzy Gillespie - Carter, Gillespie, Inc. (Pablo) Buddy Tate & the Muse All-Stars - Live at Sandy's (Muse) I was listening to that last night. Such a wonderful record; one of Fortune's best, I think. I'm sad that he's gone. RIP
  6. Earlier today and again now:
  7. Bobby Hutcherson - Head On (Blue Note) An atypical Hutch record because all of the pieces (except for one CD bonus track) were written by Todd "Bayeté" Cochran.
  8. While commuting into work this morning after a week of vacation: Johnny Lytle - The Soulful Rebel and People & Love (Milestone; reissued by Real Gone Music) Outstanding music -- jazz or soul jazz or whatever it is. NP: Kenny Barron Trio - Lemuria-Seascape (Candid) One of my favorite Kenny Barron records. It's like home cooking; it may be familiar but it always tastes good.
  9. I'm not a reflexive Jarrett fan, but I think he made some SUPERB music with his "American Quartet" on Impulse. Also agree completely regarding those Impulse 2-in-1 recordings. So much great music there!
  10. Inspired by others' recent Mingus posts: Charles Mingus - Changes One (Atlantic)
  11. I have quite a few albums loaded on my phone. Plus, the apartment that we rented has wireless / internet connectivity, so I also can stream music from the "cloud." We're in Quito, Ecuador (not Peru) though. 😉
  12. Desert-island music. Some of Jarrett's very best music, imo.
  13. Tremendous record.
  14. Cedar Walton - Soul Cycle (Prestige) Jerry Gonzalez & the Fort Apache Band - Pensativo (Milestone)
  15. Ellington band members did the same thing when Dizzy Gillespie was in the band for a minute. Per Diz, guys in the trumpet section were very "territorial" about their parts. I bet the band vets thought Diz was an upstart whippersnapper -- just like they did with Elvin.
  16. I should go upstairs and go to bed -- but I'm on a roll, enjoying the music too much. NP: Cal Tjader - Tjader (Fantasy)
  17. Now: Jaki Byard - There'll Be Some Changes Made (Muse) First listen of a new-to-me LP. No surprise: Byard is magnificent. Earlier: Richard "Groove" Holmes - Jazz Milestones Series (Pacific Jazz) My LP is actually mono, not stereo.
