  1. Notice inflation kicking in? They gave ladies a price break too. The 4/- stand for four shillings. Jamaica switched to dollars/cents in the 1970s.

  3. I don't know squat about any of this. I do remember a little of the music of Desmond Dekker, but little else. I was a kid...
  4. You asked for it! (wonder if Count Boothe was Ken Boothe?) We've got around 40 of these cards and they get a bit repetitive as the sponsors of the dances tended to copy the same style. They date from 1962 to the rocksteady years of 1968. Dad would get these invites from people at the factory he worked at, and he obviously saved a bunch of them. He went to some of the dances, but I don't think he went to many. Here we go: MESSRS BOOTHE & CHANG cordially invite you to attend A Night With the Girls at BOOTHE's LAWN, LONGWOOD On FRIDAY, 16th JUNE, 1967 Music by the great SUPER TONE & Count BOOTHE tokeep you BUGALOOING from 8 pm. till dawn. 8. I grew up with this stuff as a kid in Jamaica in the 60s. My parents didn't exactly play the music, but Jamaicans were fond of setting up outdoor speakers and you would hear the music while driving the unpaved roads. Of course, this stuff was played in clubs all over. Wish I could scan stuff. I'd show printed invites to parties with live music played by contemporaries of the people mentioned here. Dad had saved a lot of these cards cause they said some cool and funny things. I remember Desmond Dekker was a big name. Wasn't his band known as the Aces? Also, I recall Justin Hinds and the Dominoes. Haven't heard this stuff since I was a kid. Am I missing something?
  9. Some good that would do me now that I've already purchased the Mosaic Select and sold off my two JRVGs.
  10. Sorry for the mistitle, Shrdlu. I agree with you on the Brazilian pieces. For the record, I think Chuck is too harsh regarding the music on this set. "Merry Ole Soul" is pretty bad, I'll admit; but I find the Brazilian-dominated sessions on "Phantom" "How Insensitive," "It Can Only Happen With You," and "I Don't Care Who Knows It," to be charming and often beautiful. Again, the music is pretty good, but that awful mastering...
  11. Not only that but ole Conn500 here has the diplomatic skills to lure Sahara Blue over to our side to make it a 3 on 1! What the heck! In the end, we'll all be pals and they'll be no fightin' whatsoever. And Eric owes me a visit when Organissimo plays next at the Bird of Paradise in Ann Arbor.
  12. Nahh, I'm sure people posted the unflattering photos just to see how Catesta would respond.
  13. I got thumped on ebay in a bidding war for "Phantom" for the umpteenth time. Where's J.A.W? I quit cause he showed he'd bid the moon. Then I discovered that "It Can Only Happen to You" was on it as well. I happen to like Duke Pearson's later stuff. I think he tried to maintain some quality control at Blue Note during its declining years (and he was declining in health at the same time.) Then there was the additional incentive that I could get some fair coin for my two Pearson JRVGs which could be applied to the purchase of the Select. It all made sense really.
  14. Don't you have some lawns to mow, Chris?
  15. What a bunch of tripe!
  16. These scammers and ne'er do wellers are all alike. They refuse to answer countless emails then when you post a negative feedback, they respond immediately! The dude is a scumbag, Mark. Could someone help out and post a link of the guy's ebay portfolio? I want to send him a nasty. B)
  17. Doesn't bother me any. My vote was that it was okay. The main thing is that it represents "you" in some way; or it expresses some part of your personality. That part may be a sense of humor. Whatever.... I am offended by dishonesty. There's none of that in your actions, Evan. It might actually be interpreted as an act of honesty on your part by displaying that avatar. For some reason, I find the name, "Saxophone vagina" annoying and dishonest. Can't quite explain why; maybe because it is just plain tasteless. I don't feel the same way about your avatar, Evan.
  18. Doesn't ring any bells, but this is terrific comedy! Perhaps some of it is true, but my view of the typical Organissimo poster is a person who is definitely eccentric and intelligent and who is quite solicitous regarding the needs of other boardmembers. In short, the type of person I like!
  19. It's always an interesting excercise to imagine how we may be viewed by outsiders. As for politics, I'm sure people have noticed how little I post on this forum since I've started my new job. I now stick to only the fora and topics which interest me the most and no longer feel obligated to read just about everything posted. It was too time-consuming and I had to cut down on my Organissimo-time. I don't even look at the politics section anymore. My point is that it is easily ignored if you choose to do so. I believe we are all poorer by cutting out opportunities for discussion or even mudslinging. The main thing is that the mudslinging be confined to a forum. It can be viewed as a kind of playroom where some things are allowed to go on which otherwise would not be allowed elsewhere. That playroom is easily avoided for those not inclined to visit it. In my case, I can't do it due to time constraints. For others, it may be because they are more sensitive towards arguments. But I certainly wouldn't look to get rid of our playroom. If an outsider judges Organissmo by its Political forum then that person is pretty shortsighted and pretty darned narrowminded. There's a lot more here than our politics forum. I wouldn't sweat over what others think if they adopt that kind of circumscribed view.
  20. You can tell the difference between good and bad remasterings with all that noise???? Do you A/B your discs in the car or on your main stereo? Sorry Paul, but all I can say to that is You may be misinterpreting me here, Dan. When you hear drum cymbals loud and clear and then can barely hear the piano solo on the same tune, you know the mastering is garbage. I do some A/B at home; but in general I don't do much of it.
  21. Impossible for me to listen to music at work, but I do listen in my car 2 1/2 hours each day during my commutes. That's one big reason why good masterings are important to me. Who can listen to crappy masterings with the sound of tires on the freeway at 75+ miles per hour?
  22. Gee, I was planning on getting the Duke Pearson SELECT. (You can always re-arrange the tunes on a cdr) It still might be worth getting in that "It Can Only Happen To You" and "The Phantom" are impossible to find individually. Then "How Insensitive" and "Merry Ole Soul" are available as expensive JRVGs. Might as well go for the crappy mastering for only $39. Other option is to be on Organissimo all day long and jump on Grey's JRVG auctions.
  23. I don't really know the amount, but it's too much in my opinion. I pay someone to do my taxes and only pay attention to what I get back. I've since buried my returns in my documents box. Too lazy to dig it out right now. I'm bushed from work...
  24. I'm keeping the box set. A poor job of mastering is still better than not having the music. And I do happen to like the later Duke Pearson stuff. Thanks for everyone's comments. I gotta go to work.
