  1. Sounds like poor Mr. Frank ran around with the wrong crowd. Amazing story. If he had survived once more, it seems that he would have eventually died from another set of shootings.
  2. Thanks FOF. Agree with you on Kasay's kick, but you know, he didn't have to nail that 50-yard field goal either. Actually, the idea was to avoid kicking the ball to Bethea Johnson, who is a real speedster and he ended up by kicking it out of bounds. I too missed the halftime celebrations as it wasn't my kind of music. Where was Cedar Walton or Charles Lloyd? B) My favorite commercial was the one about the ref taking all the verbal abuse and we find out "how he does it!" He takes worse abuse at home. Quite mysogenic but funny nevertheless. Haven't been able to download any of the press conferences yet. This will start sinking in tomorrow. Too damned excited right now.
  3. Yahhh!! We did it!!! Thoughts of the game: Credit goes out to the Panthers who came to play. The Pats, on the other hand looked heavily burdened by their favored status. This is the worst game played by the Patriots in a long time. At the same time, Carolina was very lucky to be able to stay in the game. While our kicker missed two 30-yard field goals, theirs nails a 50-yarder. Figures... Say what you will about that "bad spot," Jim, but the truth is that one camera angle showed that it was a first down while another showed it short. The evidence was inconclusive and not worthy of being overturned. In the meantime, there was a clear fumble on the part of the Panther receiver who dropped the ball after being hit, while the refs ruled it as incomplete. I am totally mystified as to why Bill Belichick never challenged the call. Perhaps the Panthers got the next play off quickly. Then a couple of questionable calls on the Patriot defenders. Seems the refs wanted to tighten up on holding of wide receivers off the line of scrimmage. That offensive interference call on Troy Brown is rarely called on receivers. In the meantime, Carolina linebacker Dan Morgan spears Brady with his helmet and no flag on that. Weird! Brady got wacked on the chin by Morgan's helmet. Pats have to win in a boring fashion. They've got a great and exciting defence but the offense is pedestrian. Our punter is the worst in the league. He keeps games close. Vinatieri has been less than perfect this year. We don't have any depth at the safety position at all and when Rodney Harrison went out with an injury, the Panthers immediately wen to work down the middle of the field and scored an easy touchdown. I did feel that if Vinatieri misses that final kick, we would lose the game in overtime. We have no real backup for Rodney Harrison. The Pats have some holes to fill in the offseason. The fact that they've got 7 picks in the first 4 rounds of the next draft won't hurt at all. They've got to address their safety position. The need a backup for Rodney and they've got to move Eugene Wilson from safety back to cornerback, which is his natural position. Strangely enough and hidden in their successful year is the fact that they never were able to replace Lawyer Milloy when he was cut at the beginning of the season. Let's give praise to the Patriot offensive line which didn't allow a sack all game against the fearsome front four of the Panthers. That offensive line has played extremely well all season and gets no press at all. The Patriot defence looked awful at times while stymying Carolina in the first quarter. The Panther offence looked very ragged but they would connect on these desperate passes and desperate runs. They were very opportunistic and this kept them in the game. Carolina is a team on the rise. As long as they don't encounter any salary cap issues, they will only get better. They will be a force next year. Dynasty? Don't talk to me about that! This game went too close for me to consider my team a dynasty. Now if we win another Super Bowl in the next two years, then I might thing that. Otherwise forget it! I believe we will have a better team next year, but it is virtually impossible to repeat as champions and everyone will be gunning for us. Our plum free agent prize, Linebacker Roosevelt Colvin was placed on injured reserve after the third game of the season. He'll be back next year. Then all those draft picks. We'll be in the running, but we won't win it all. Perhaps in 2006. I'll take the win even if we didn't play our best. I'll take it. A win is a win. Feels good...
  4. Hey Ghostie, What's with sneaking in a baseball post here? Baseball is boooooring!
  5. I agree and try to mention whether I like the tune or not. Of course, sometimes I cannot determine whether I like something or not on only two or three hearings. Most of the time I can, but not always. Yes, I think we should discuss whether we like the songs or not. I particularly like Dan's DKDC comments. That's the typical type of honesty we get from Dan which makes him a joy to read. Regarding looking at the comments of others: I get your point Daniel, but my problem with it as I had to read 5 pages of posts was the regurgitated comments. How many times did I read that tune #1 was from a movie score as soon as one poster had mentioned it? I say again, where's the fun? Come on everyone, use your own imagination. This isn't a contest to see how many correct identifications you get. It should be as Daniel says a forum where you mention whether a tune turns you on or not. If you don't wish to comment on the music or don't have the time (like Catesta) then that's fine, but don't look at everyone's comments then post. Surely that will cloud your judgement?
  6. Well let me wait until the NE Patriots have a sucky team before deciding to quit watching football brutality! B)
  7. What are you some kind of wise ass? NOW I get it, after just reading the answers. Catesta, you sly dog. I think it's okay as long as you didn't plan to comment or didn't have the time. What I dont care to read is regurgitated comments, because people have read others' posts.
  8. Now I shall wait for the arrival of #6. :rsmile:
  9. Well, I got one sideman correct (Pepper Adams) and correctl identified two standards. Aside from that, didn't correctly guess anything. This is my usual average. I don't own any of the discs. (BTW, great song, JimSangry!) At least I didn't cheat by looking at other people's posts and ended up regurgitating what others said... Why do you guys do that? Where's the fun? I propose a new rule: No looking at anybody's other posts unless you don't plan to describe or guess the tracks. Quite frankly, I had to read through all the back posts and I found much that was repetitive owing to people having read the posts of others. Takes away the fun.
  10. I knew Sangry would like this tune! (see my comments a couple posts up.)
  11. That would spoil all the fun. I have no idea what might prompt people to do that unless they felt an omnicognizant reputation to uphold--and tough tits on them if they feel so insecure as to "cheat." Anyway, I didn't recognize any of the titles so it didn't matter.
  12. I've finally got my comments! Better late than never! I do take this stuff somewhat seriously since I received my disc at some expense to the creator and his helpers. As usual, I haven't yet looked at other people's comments. Wow, 5 pages to go through! Here we go: 1. Sounds like the prelude to another song. Cannot identify it. Too short; no develepment. Jazz in Haiku. 2. Okay song. I cannot think of a thing to say... 3. Kick butt tune. The warm tone of the bari (Pepper Adams?) contrasts with the technically proficient but less emotional tenor solo. 4. Great tune. Very Coltrane-influenced. Sometimes I wonder if it's Sonny Rollins; other times Eric Dolphy on tenor. 5. Cecil Mcbee on bass? (wild shot!) Elvin Jones on drums? 6. Nice playing. Watkins on bass? That final flurry sounds familiar. I might own this... 7. I know the song, but typically cannot identify it. Never heard this version before. 8. No instant appeal for me. 9. More contemporary. Do not know them. 10. Interesting music and band to accompany a vocalist. I do like the band, but am not crazy about jazz vocals. Lyrics seem strange. Jim Sangrey will like this tune!! 11. Not my specialty area at all. Threadgill? Something that Chuck Nessa would produce. 12. Not my tastes at all. 13. Reminds me of Pharoah Sanders but more subdued and less passion than we are accustomed to with the Little Rock native. Must be someone else. 14. Time is a standard; cannot name it. Yes I can! I think it's Monk's "Ask Me Now." I don't know the musicians. 15. I'm terrible at identifying tunes, but I think this is "Lover man." I've obviously heard it before. Lots of horns and active basslines, Couw. I thank you for getting the disc over to me. Thanks again!
  13. The only Spanish BN I have is "Boss Horn." I already owned all the others before the Spanish stuff became available. I did get "Turning Point" afterwards on regular Blue Note (Japanese? I can't remember.)
  14. Wow, Philly. Seems like every football player comes out of the sport with busted knees and legs: linemen and running backs in particular. Ironically, the positions with the greatest vulnerability are punters and quarterbacks and they seem to leave the game intact. I think quarterbacks get lots of concussions, though. I do believe that football players deserve the high dollars they do earn. It's strange: I quit watching boxing years ago owing to what I viewed as excessive brutality. This feeling hasn't yet transferred over to the gridiron. I might feel the same way eventually and be repulsed by the sport. Hard to say.
  15. Earl owns a meatpacking business. Hope it's doing well. Way to to Jim!
  16. I think that defensive back was Isaiah Robertson. I got that from ESPN. I remember that too. My fondest memory of Earl was a Thanksgiving Day game against the fearsome Cowboys. Earl ripped through the Doomsday Defense again and again. I think he finished with 200 yards even though Dallas was stacking the line to stop him. I was breathless.
  17. There's a sad story about Earl Campbell on espn.nfl. (sorry I don't know how to post links.) Earl will be in Houston for the Super Bowl and will be involved in one of the ceremonies. Once a feared running back in the NFL, Earl can barely walk today. He is able to take a few steps but is incapable of walking up stairs and often retreats back to his wheelchair. He has had major back surgery recently and suffers pain in his legs, back and shoulders. It all came from a bruising rushing style which made him the greatest running back that I have ever seen. (I didn't watch Jim Brown as I wasn't into football at the time.) Originally a linebacker in highschool, Campbell switched to running back and emulated Jim Brown's style of running over people. He couldn't dance or do fancy steps; Earl realized his style was to run over people. He played for only 8 or 9 seasons, but those seasons were cometlike. The great man can now barely move. I have tears in my eyes for Earl...
  18. The ESPN picks are now in and 14 of the experts are going with New England while 6 are choosing Carolina as the winner. Merrill Hoge and Chris Mortenson just never learn; they both went with Indy over NE.
  19. I think those Taiwanese have seen just about everything that has issued from the ocean. How did they get that beast on the truck?
  20. Glad to see you back, GROPE. DEEP is missed though the megalomania got a little thick there...
  21. Despite my best judgement, I'm joining in on this thread. I mean the poor man is trying to make millions with his music. Why do we pick on him so? My contribution: "Shitty" ("Nutty)
  22. That Farmer/Golson, "Blues on Down" is excellent stuff. Reasonably priced too. Recommended to anyone.
  23. Stay strong Tom and be sure you've got our support here on the board. I've been away for a couple days myself as I've been sick with kidney stones. I think I'm making progress now and the fevers are gone... So sad to hear the news about your mother.
