  2. Yeah, I'd only call Hendrix a music genius. American popular music tastes are so low that the "genius" label is tossed about casually.

  4. Chestnut downed 66 dogs and buried his own record of 59 1/2. I never thought Kobayashi could be beaten, but we've got a new superstar in town!
  5. Sorry to hear the news. I've been unemployed for about a year now and this has been exacerbated by my desires to seek a career change. NW Ohio and Michigan job markets are dead. I've been trying to get back into teaching at the college level, but fulltime positions are hard to get. Anyway, you can get some funds to get by via home equity line of credit. It would be difficult to get a home equity loan once you are unemployed, but you might have a line of credit already established. Then you start hitting your 401ks and IRAs. It's not fun to do that, but it is a source of funds. Main thing is to be working towards finding a position. Welcome to America! You were lucky to have been employed for the last 19 years. Good luck to you. Things will turn around. Some job help suggestions: 1. Go to the local employment agency in your city or area. They have a database of jobs. 2. Set up an appointment with a counselor at a local college. They can help you find what you like to do. 3. Network with your contacts. This has already been mentioned. 4. Monster is a good source. 5. Visit Temp agencies in person with your resume. Temp positions often lead to full time positions. 6 Enjoy the time off! It's hard to get a perspective of life when you work all the time. Sometimes some enforced downtime really helps. I've spent a lot of quality time with my son over the last year or so. I needed the time to get him headed in the right direction. After being off work for so long now, I've seen that most Americans are in automoton-mode. They have no idea about life around them, because it has been all work and their minds are fixated on their work issues. Whenever a door closes another opens somewhere else. It's just that the opened door might not be in front of you and, in fact, has opened in a direction you never considered.
  6. That 'splains a bunch. I dig Lonnie's version of "Sunshine Superman" on Move your Hand.
  7. Your avatar is mighty tasty, and I'm normally not into blondes! :rsmile:
  8. One last go round before ebay. The Grover Washington is really rare. Check out the asking prices at any vendor who happens to have a copy. I can't even find a pic to show.
  9. cost includes shipping to US Grover Washington Jr., "A Secret Place/All the King's Horses" 2fer on Motown label. (tricky to get) $14 Kenny Dorham, "The Shadow of Your Smile" West Wind Label Live session from Feb. 25th, 1966. $10 Both are in good used condition.
  10. WWIII about to break out in SS1's tank.
  11. PLEASE tell me that's a typo! Ha! Good catch. Sorry for the fright. I have to wonder if the RVG series will even be around by Sept. 2008. Yes, and it seems as if Cuscuna is pushing what he can while he can. We all smell that this will end soon enough.
  12. Whatever do you mean? Hey Jim, careful waving that thing around; you might hurt somebody!
  13. Of course I'm into chess, but bridge is a great game too. I'd play more if I could fine three others to make up a game.
  14. What's a Q.I. test? Questionable intelligence?
  15. It's very encouraging if you are saying that countries whose economies are service-dominated can do well. It would imply that America has a future. Right now, here in the Midwest, all we see is economic decline owing to our industrial decline. I don't know whether Britain's decline predated it's industrial decline. I would guess that industry was only part of the story. Britain's economic strength in the 1870s lay in its trade. It was taking in all kinds of commodities from its colonies and trading manufactured goods. It was cooking on all cylindars so to speak, as the economy wasn't reliant on a single aspect. It dominated in industry, trade and finance. Wars have played a large role in economic shifts too. Countries which were entering war really pumped up their production. America started to become a major factor around WW1.
  16. While you are correct to a degree, I don't think it's as big of a degree as you think. The British thought "services" could replace manufacturing, as did other major economic powers of the past. When they reached that stage, they were already fading. As are we. Not sure what you are talking about -- Britain's per capita GDP is now higher than it was 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago. Guy But Britain has been slipping farther and farther down the league table. Since about the 1870s, I think. MG By "league" do you mean European league? If so, then that stat is virtually meaningless in that Britain had the world's largest economy in 1870. Only one way to go from there, baby...and it's down!
  17. I also enjoy this cd. The cover is one of BN's best too. Mosaic should have put out a 9 disc Stanley set and included the stuff w/ Shirley Scott.
  18. SS1 looking to fill in some greaze holes.....
  19. You'll be sorry! I'm no big fan of this set, yet, but I'm gonna keep hold of it 'cause I have a feeling it will grow. Besides, the idea of dumping an album that has Patton, Green, Clark is completely ridiculous. My tastes have changed. I've got to pick this up again. With BJP, Grant and Sonny? C'mon, it can't be that bad.
  20. Yes, I mean economic size rather than economic strength. My point is that the pollution is now the unmistakeable sign that China is becoming the largest economy. It's an important indicator of economic size. No moral judgement was being expressed here. I was just stating some facts.
  21. Fish should be eaten not watched.
  22. What do you mean by "economic strength"? Guy Consumption and production as a sign of industrial strength.
  23. Pollution emissions have been a long time indicator of economic strength. Towards the end of the 19th century, Britain still led the world in coal consumption, even ahead of the US (If I correctly remember my figures from Paul Kennedy's "Rise and Fall of the Great Powers.") There is the issue of pollution controls but there is also the issue of a very large and dynamic economy.
  24. This is an good point, but did the blacks of America support the stripper? The black spokesman did, but what of the public at large?
  25. I think this stuff is very important. Nifong got busted spending public $ on a nonexistent case. It's a corrupt tactic that actually works most of the time. Eliot Spitzer's road to NY governor was paved by generalized class action lawsuits against financial firms. A few companies got slapped on the wrist and just passed the costs down to investors. In the meantime, the companies are likely doing whatever improprieties they used to do. No change, but Spitzer got his headlines and his governorship, and the American public is poorer for it. Added compliance costs are always handed down to the customer.
