  1. Just spun my Coltrane & Monk K2....it sounds magnificent!
  2. I have the Bob Marley "Legend" reissue and didn't think it was too great. It added a couple of songs, but the majority of the bonus material was just some DJ's remixing the tunes already on the CD. However, The Who's "Live at Leeds" expanded issue is nice becuase it has the entire concert.
  3. Yes. That's exactly it. No jokes allowed. Heretofor, any lollygagging, frivilous posts, or humor will not be tolerated and you'll be banned. So glad that my point was understood loud and clear. Gimme a break. I'm just saying, between this thread and terri's thread about Norah Jones, not to mention cooltrane's "I'm new" thread, when anyone new comes along everyone assumes they are spamming the board and instantly poke fun at them. Not exactly a way to encourage new membership. Do we really have a big problem with spam on this board? If so, I haven't noticed. How about being a little more kind to the new posters? I was never a big supporter of hazing in college and I'm not now, if you know what I mean. And no, this isn't directed at anyone in particular so don't get all defensive on me. Well put, b3-er. I'm glad you said something.
  4. LWayne, I've been to the Cultural Center one time to see a free show, but I believe that Ben Allison is playing on a different stage than the one I was at, so I'm unsure about the size of the venue. However, regardless of the size of the venue, I would plan on getting there at least an hour before showtime to guarentee a good seat. It will surely be crowded, being a Thursday night and all.
  5. Only being into jazz for about 5 or 6 years, there's still ALOT of music that I haven't yet come across. Every now and then, you discover some music that really blows your mind and you can't believe you hadn't heard about it before. Well, I'm happy to say that this set has provided me with yet another one of those experiences. This music is wonderful.

Mike, What do you mean by this? I like AT but I also like Jimmy Cobb as well. I like Jimmy Cobb as well. He's got a nice touch and a near perfect sense of swing. But on a song like "Countdown", he wouldn't have lasted. Jimmy Cobb never had the chops that AT had. I always put Jimmy Cobb in a similar category as Billy Higgins (although they are very different stylisticly) in that they could both swing the shit out of a song and really drive a band, but they weren't the greatest soloists, and that's because they lacked chops. Art Taylor had chops galore.

Taylor is a great drummer, and believe me, I can tell the difference between him and Philly Joe if blindfolded! I agree that he wasn't innovative, but I can tell you, he played ALOT better than a good number of those drummers who were popping up on sessions left and right around that time. Plus, something that AT gets overlooked for is his incredible brushwork. He had this sixteenth note groove that he would play on ballads sometimes....really swinging. I've been digging my new Dizzy Reece Mosaic Select....AT is all over it! Great stuff.
  8. Yeah, Von Freeman's session is on Tuesday nights at the New Apartment Lounge. There's alot of jam sessions, but the majority of them take place during the week. On weekends, the stages are reserved for the gigs. Sunday nights, though, there are quite a few jam sessions as well.
  9. Ben Allison is in Chicago this weekend, he's playing a free show on Thursday night at the Chicago Cultural Center, and is playing with Medicine Wheel on Friday and Saturday nights at the Green Mill. I'm back from a business trip late Friday night, so I'm gonna try to make Saturday's show. Never seen this group, but have wanted to ever since discovering their music last year. If anyone is interested in going and wants to meet up, drop me a PM!
  10. Sounds interesting. Has anyone heard any of the other work this trio has done? I'm completely unfamiliar. Sounds like the music would be somewhat eclectic (not a bad thing!).
  11. Its FAR from being the best movie of the year. I could think of 10 off the top of my head that were better....but its good nonetheless. Its Jamie Foxx's performance that really makes it worth seeing. I think he's got a lock on the Oscar...his only challenge should come from Leonardo DiCaprio, who gave the performance of a lifetime in "The Aviator". Its a tough choice.
  12. Brandon, $28.73 at criteriondvd.com, plus free shipping. This is the best site on the web I've found to buy CC DVDs. http://www.criteriondvd.com/item_info.php?item_id=102
  13. Yeah, that's a great flick. I need to get that one.
  14. Last tour was John Pattucci and Brian Blade in the rhythm section, but given the high demand for both of them, its hard to tell who will be filling the spots this time.
  15. I'm seeing them in Chicago in March as well. Really looking forward to it. I really like the CD alot.
  16. Man, he's been putting out CDs like crazy lately. What's this, like his fifth release in the past 6 months?
  17. I work with Jamacians on a near daily basis, and one of my clients told me that the press just reported that this story is bogus, and that Rita Marley is denying saying anything of the sort.
  18. I have this album, and you are right, Brad, it is a very fine release. I particularly enjoyed their interpretations of the Ellington stuff. But what Danilo Perez is doing....it's cutting edge. Danilo's trio is breaking new ground. And when you can hear someone breaking new ground, to me, jazz doesn't get any more exciting than that. As many great piano trio releases as there were in 2004, I don't think any were as advanced as "Live at the Jazz Showcase".

Plus, they released that "Live at Yoshi's: Vol. 1" album on MaxJazz with Ray Drummond and Victor Lewis. I've heard that Vol. 2 is due out this year. I heard some cuts from Vol. 1 on the radio....very nice.
  20. akanalog, can I give you a couple recommendations? Try Avshai Cohen's "The Trumpet Player" and "Guilty" by Chris Cheek, Ethan Iverson, Ben Street, and Jorge Rossy. Both are on FSNT. Have you tried William Parker's "Scrapbook" on Thirsty Ear? If you listen to these and still feel the same, I will stand corrected! By the way, we're the same age! I can't believe my 10 year high school reunion is this year....
  21. A strange combination this morning.....its "Wagon Wheels" from Sonny Rollins' Way Out West album, and "Close Edge" by Mos Def.
  22. It always makes me sad to read comments like these. There's so much good jazz coming out these days (especially on FSNT), but it seems that so many people are so wrapped up in the golden ages that they become discriminatory against everything else. Not a good sign for our music.
  23. Thanks, everyone, for your feedback. I really appreciate it.
  24. I can't believe that....what a disgrace. I paid $15 for it at the Jazz Showcase release party. It almost sounds like a mistake... In any event, its a damn shame, because people should really be hearing this music, and now most likely won't because of the price.
