  1. I emphatically second this recommendation. I picked up this album almost by accident, but it's great. Especially "Parisian Thoroughfare" and "Memories of You". Guy I'll third it. Got it a few weeks back and am having a hard time getting it out of the changer. This thread is the best and worst thing that's happened in a long time. I'm making a want list based on everyones' recommendations as well as my own research. I don't know how I'm gonna afford all these CDs. But at the same time, not buying them seems like it would be a huge mistake.
  2. Good one, Uncle Skid! Looks alot like what I hope my next order will be, although I might throw in the Dexter Mosaic Select as well.
  3. What about the McCoy Tyner titles?
  4. I'm in the camp that agrees that there are way too many Mobleys, Blakeys, Silvers, and Morgans being reissued. Not that there's anything wrong with them, but it would be nice to see something different.
  5. The Bobby Hutcherson and Andrew Hill titles that have already been mentioned REALLY, REALLY, REALLY need to be reissued....preferably as RVG's.
  6. I agree. A fine CD. Ron Carter sounds great with the band. I've only seen Eric Alexander once, with the supergroup One For All. It was an excellent show. Look forward to seeing him with the Mabern group.
  7. Please report how the show was!
  8. Who's doing the tracks on this Nas album? I haven't liked any of his albums since "It Was Written", but if Primo does all the tracks on his next album, we might have a classic on our hands.
  9. Oh, how I wish I could see this band.....
  10. Saw it this weekend. Incredible!
  11. Thanks blue lake! I've been eyeing this one for quite some time, and I think now you've convinced me to take the plunge. LOTS of good stuff on Delmark recently...
  12. I used to be a big fan of these guys. From 1998-2001, I saw them probably 15 times or so. I agree that their musicianship is a step above most jambands. But after a while, I found that their jamming was getting a bit boring for my tastes. Many times the songs went on for alot longer than they needed to be. Phish's and the Grateful Dead's jamming was much more suited to my tastes. I would be interested to see them in concert now. From what I hear, they are becoming quite good again....more like they were in the early days.
  13. Roy Hargrove Quintet tonight at the Showcase!!! :rsmile:
  14. It has been a particularly strong year for piano trio albums. Several new releases on MaxJazz by Denny Zietlin, Mulgrew Miller, and Jessica Williams, as well as Frank Kimbrough's "LULLABLUEBYE" and the new Keith Jarrett disc come to mind, as do several others. But nothing can prepare you for this new one by Danilo Perez. It will only availiable through his website www.daniloperez.com, and I don't even think its for sale yet, though it should be sometime before the end of this month according to the site. It features his trio with Ben Street and Adam Cruz, and was recorded here in Chicago at the Jazz Showcase last year. I was able to get an advance copy of the album during the trio's stretch at the Showcase last month. I'm telling you, this is one of those discs that will just leave you floored. This is the new breed of the jazz piano trio. Their playing is mindblowing. I have not heard any modern piano trio play on this level....not even Jason Moran's. Danilo has obviously learned alot from and been influenced by his time with Wayne Shorter. He's really starting to break through into a whole new thing. His band is amazing. Adam Cruz is one of the best drummers I've ever heard in my life. In terms of technique, musicality, and rhythmic variation, I don't think there's many who can hang with him. And Ben Street is one of the more original bass stylists around. The way these guys play is so hard to describe...it sounds like they are all playing completely different things, but it all fits together like a strange puzzle. It is really exciting stuff. Any fans of Danilo and piano trios in general cannot be without this one.
  15. I'll go against the majority and say the Paul Chambers. Nearly two full discs of Coltrane....what else do you need? Plus, lots of great players on there like Donald Byrd, Kenny Burrell, Art Blakey and Sonny Clark. Its some really, really tight music. I find myself revisiting it quite often.

    Matt Wilson

This one is on my "to buy" list. I've heard nothing but good reviews. Its hard to find a release with Matt on drums that is not a good one.
  17. I've convinced three film-geek close friends of mine to see it, and the reports back have all been glowing. BruceH and jlhoots, please let us know what you thought.
  18. A film called "Sideways" has slipped its way into theaters under the radar. I saw it yesterday afternoon, and I'm trying to spread the word to get people to see this great film. Its directed by Alexander Payne of "About Schmidt" and "Election" fame, and starts Paul Giamatti, who stared in last year's "American Splendor". There is so much to say about this film....its really, really touching, extremely funny, and quite introspective. The performances across the board are stellar, especially Giamatti's, and don't be surprised if some Oscar nods go to Giamatti and Virgina Madsen. This is easily Alexander Payne's best work to date, and to me this film is one of the year's best right alongside "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", Farenhiet 911", "Passion of the Christ" and "Ray". DO NOT miss this one.
  19. Blue Train
  20. Anyone else heard Sirius Calling?
  21. I don't like the sound of that.....not on an AEC recording...
  22. Anyone heard it yet? Thoughts?
  23. Captain Marvel is a must have.

    Roy Haynes

Agree with both of these statements. And yes, Late, he's quite the small porportioned individual. You'd never know it by the way he plays those skins, though. My favorite recorded Roy Haynes performance is on Chick Corea's "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs". His playing on that album was really of revolutionary quality, but it seems that he never quite got the credit that he deserved for his work there.
