  1. Just happened to find this thread while doing a search for Fred Van Hove reverences; any responses from the newer members?
  2. Hey, if anything can make you believe in a higher power, it was Gene Scott. And I do mean higher... Nothing would cheer me up when I was down like listening to this guy, particularly when he was being extremely....uh...'logical' in an explanation!
  3. I'll be damned; I didn't think of the Globetrotters connection....good one, Paul!
  4. Well, no gratuity for me; I still don't get it, completely... When you guys say you want guitar that sounds like guitar, I'm not sure I understand what you mean, as my brain is not accepting the proposition that a guitar doesn't sound like a guitar. Do you mean you want the guitar to sound like an acoustic guitar? Help me out here guys; this is not my smart alec persona, I'm really trying to understand the point...
  5. Well, I don't know if this is the same thing you're describing, but I've found that the album I listened to three years ago is not necessarily the same album I hear today even though it's the same album. I've only been listening to jazz for a little over six years now, so I'm not sure I can assume I know any work, even one I've listened to many times. So if I'm talking about a work that I haven't listened to in a couple of years, I don't know what I'm talking about. On the other hand, I imagine this musical growth will keep up, so I don't know what I'm talking about now from the standpoint of three years in the future. Look, just to be safe, assume I don't know what I'm talking about...
  6. Well, whaddya know...you can find out anything on the internet! We only went 8-12 this year, so no tournament for us. Odd discover: when I graduated back in '75 we were the Blue Tide. Now we're the Wildcats. Damn kids...
  7. I wouldn't even know how to begin finding out!
  8. Must have been from a more enlightened age; they'd lynch Rowsey today...
  9. I guess I'd prefer people would just sound like themselves. That sounds simplistic, and with any other instruments it would be. But jazz seems to lock guitar in a narrow box and say 'it must sound like this or it isn't jazz'.
  10. I dunno Skieth; to me the problem is that jazz guitarists in general are too concerned with making the electric guitar sound exactly like an electric guitar sounds (yeah, I know; that makes no sense at all). So many of them sound exactly the same (tone-wise) as Wes Montgomery. I get the idea that jazz guitarists cringe when they hear Hendrix, or darn near any other rock guitarist, and not because of the music they're playing.
  11. So...this is all your fault!
  12. I'd say you've made the decision for us, Tony!
  13. Hope you get over your cold soon! Excube me?
  14. Ah. So there is actually a use for it after all!
  15. Well, if the rest are like me, we're trying to figure out what your last post meant!
  16. Hmmm....you may be onto something there!
  17. Yeah, that's it...what thread...yeah...
  18. I understood that!!!
  19. As played by George Barnosaurous? :rsmile:
  20. Wait a minute; let me get my Organissimo Decoder Ring...
  21. Look, as long as Kate Winslet doesn't play Brer Rabbit, I can hang...
  22. I just cheated and looked at AMG. It can't be THAT one!!!
  23. I'm assuming he doesn't play "Happy Birthday"...
