No, Charlie Mariano is the composer and arranger on the selected track.
From the liner notes: "Quincy Jones, who produced this album, selected the personnel, picked the instrumentation and arrangers."
4. I got it, "The Oom is blues" from Quincy Jones "Go West, Man!". Bill Perkins, Buddy Collette, Walter Benton, Pepper Adams, Carl Perkins, Leroy Vinnegar, Shelly Manne.
Yes, worldradiostory.com is a free website that archives tons of TV, radio & music magazines, but the DownBeat issues aren't easy to find because there are no links in the DownBeat page (?) and the search lead to incorrect links, but they are there.
My 4 favorite themes:
1. It reminded me something like Jack Sels with Lou Bennett, but not european jazz. Intriguing.
3. I also heard the Sun Ra connection in the rhythm, no idea who is but I like a lot. Also it reminded me the ethio-jazz influence on bands like Either Orchestra.
4. Fantastic blues, I need this album, I thought of an All Stars with maybe Waldron, Quinichette... but not Prestige. Unexpected. Baritone sax is great, it sounds like Pepper Adams for me.
9. The Coltrane connection.
Right, it's "Jambalaya" from Roy Clark & Joe Pass play Hank Williams. The sound of Joe Pass is unmistakable.
9. Another killer track, I hope it's in my collection. Coltrane sound, it reminds me of Billy Harper bands, but I don't think it's him.
By the way, the Cisco Bradley liner notes are from this book, that will be published soon:
