  1. The two sessions mentioned above are only separated by three months (August and November, 1956). They're both much stronger than Pepper's Discovery sessions, in my opinion. The + Eleven session is even stronger, I think. Just listened to it today. Art's tenor ... I wish he'd played more of it. (Clarinet's good too.) The K2 of this is super fine. McLovin.

    John R.T. Davies

    Probably. Yes.
  3. That Transition LP ("Lucky Strikes!") is actually a sort of second edition. It's the first American edition, but the original edition is on the French Swing label, as LDM 30.039, with the title "& Gerard Dave Pochonet All Stars." (Cover attached.) This makes things more confusing, because Thompson recorded another album with Pochonet in 1956 with a similar title (and that one is in the Jazz in Paris series). At any rate, the title in question was also on CD in the first run of Vogue/BMG discs in 1995. It's paired with a very fine Gigi Gryce session, and can be had cheaply here. Highly recommended.

    CD-Rs

I always purchase Taiyo Yudens here. Good price, free shipping, reliable vendor.
  5. Yes, you're right. Here's the original cover.

    Rare Blue Notes

Hiroshi still has a sealed copy of this ask we speak.
  7. Her first album on Verve, still one of my favorites, was in heavy rotation here all last week. One thing about Dearie that really strikes me, but that wasn't apparent for a long time — listen to the way she comps under her own singing. It's almost as if, at times, singer and pianist are two different people. Very hard not to lay down a chord when you emphasize certain words. Subtle mastery.
  8. Remember Joe Christmas? He operates Bagatellen, and is currently running a contest, with free music for the winner. He asked me if I could let the O-board know about it, and I hope that's OK. I know many readers here occasionally visit that board. Note: It'll help if you have knowledge of physics and philosophy. (I have no idea what the answer to the question is.)

Listening to In Hi-Fi, on Brunswick, right now. One of Scott's very best from the 50's.

  14. And with NKC:
  15. Tonight everyone should purchase John Lewis & Albert Mangelsdorff: Animal Dance.
  16. Were all (or most) of the white tenor saxophone mouthpieces that you see in old photos made by Brilhart? I always thought "Buescher," but maybe that's a saxophone make, and not a mouthpiece. I played a metal Brilhart once (for alto), and it was a strident little thing. Similar to a Dukoff, actually.

Or this one? (I think Garth has.)

Anyone here ever heard this one? An interesting line-up for sure.
  19. Yeah, I love that site. (They don't have the Urtreger cover though!)
  20. Here's a new article on Ed Curran. He's still living and apparently has returned to music.
  21. Both series are oft-discussed here, with good reason. Being an original cover art nerd, I thought it would be interesting to see how many original covers from these series we could unearth. I'll start with this one (attached). Please post any other original covers from these series if you have them! Some of those French records, first on 10" and then on 12", are a mess to untangle discographically.
  22. Missed this video the first time around. I'm glad the link is still active! Weird to see Alice McLeod (Coltrane) putting forth her version of Bud.
  23. From this (great) Vogue record. Check out the listener: phone's off the hook, the pen's laid down, two pints have already been drained, the cigar's just begun, new drink in hand, the vinyl spins ...
