  3. Yep, and they used to be in a box together, until they lost the license. I was in the market for the box until I saw it going on ebay for $250. i was lucky to get that box for my B-day from my wife a few years back. does anyone else have this set? i always wondered why each DVD has a round punch hole thru the barcode ? I was thinking they did this so retailers couldn't sell the dvd's individually ? My set was not punched thru the barcode ( a sealed box also)

  6. From Gary at DVD Beaver "Extremely impressive disc from Criterion. The image is a little soft at times with a lot of grain, and contrast is perfect. An excellent commentary and extras are provided. I was very impressed with the mono audio - it sounded exceptionally clear and consistent. It reaches the upper price structure tier for Criterion and is worth it. Gary W. Tooze I agree with his technical reviews 95% of the Time He is much more knowledgable than I perhaps another here might know more I have not seen this Criterion Transfer yet Watched the movie on TCM a couple of months ago
  7. Bud Shank on earlier now, listening to Morgan Shorter
  8. Very Cool I will also be looking for this
  9. I will have to see the discography for the new set as I also have much from storyville, I will not rebuy for only 1 or 2 sessions I think I am up to 11 on the DETS
  10. don't go when the gypsy moth caterpiller are hatching I took a ride on my motorcycle in the hills outside of Granby Mass (this was in the early 80's), to take some pictures of the fall colors I almost stacked my bike there were so many caterpillers on the road, it was like riding on oil I do not know if they have this problem in VT and NH

    Martial Solal

Seeing this thread made me pull out this one again what a great recording Solal's sui generis angularity and unique harmonic conception are in full "swing" with stellar support from Johnson & Motian a classic
  13. Boy, not me. There's no way I'd be waiting for the #38 at 9:30PM. You are braver than I am. The SF club is supposed to open in September or October. If they have a 2PM set on Sunday, I might make the trip. The location of the SF club is no where near regional transit and parking will be expensive and awful. The Oakand club is so much more accessible. This was my thoughts, although its been awhile since i have been to the city.
  14. Looks interesting Goldberg click on the link below the cover image when new window opens click on the cover image for track listing
  15. It sounds good, In Blackburns own words, "Many people ask us" he say's "how one describes our type of music. to this I can olny answer that I leave it to the audience because I don't want to give it a label, for me it is simply ours Mombasa's Music. Some might call it world music theres a label for you I say a synthesis of styles
  16. From Dusty Groove A sublime blend of spiritual jazz and African rhythms -- and one of the few 70s recordings made by Mombasa, a European group put together by LA trombonist Lou Blackburn! The record's got a much more righteous sound than any of Blackburn's work of the 60s -- a boldness and sense of pride that comes from its blending of percussion, acoustic bass, and soaring horn lines on trombone, trumpet, and bamboo flute! Other African elements slide into the music too -- like bits of kalimba -- and the lack of piano or keyboards on the record makes for an especially earthy sound, one that trades rhythm from the percussion with melodies from the horns in a really magical way. Tracks are long, and the set was recorded with the same post-colonial energy as similar work from Paris or London at the time -- a really righteous groove that longs to be rediscovered! Titles include "Nairobi", "Massai", "Holz", "Kenia", "Makishi", and "Shango". They have the CD Dusty Groove
