  1. Yep, that's the problem...! Lately the purchases here have been a stack of Stanley Turrentine RVGs & the 40th anniversary edition of the Zombies' Odessey & Oracle, for instance... But I'll put in a good word for the recent Keefe Jackson disc Just Like This--great band with most of the up&coming crew from the Chicago scene, plus Jeb Bishop's there too.
  2. Not really, except that I caught him live in the early 2000s & it was a great gig. In Halifax, N.S., of all places.
  3. Try PMing Ted O'Reilly who frequents this board sometimes--he'd know how to get hold of one via John Norris or someone else.

Well, glad to hear that the rest of his catalogue is better than that one; definitely not a good intro. I haven't really sought out much else, because of that & because a few correspondents I asked about O'Leary gave the emailed equivalent of a shrug: not bad but not great either.

Heart attack after chasing a thief, IIRC. It's in the Ornette bio.
  6. 7/4: No: if you have the intervals perfect in the home key, then without retuning you will have false intervals of varying kinds if you construct chords with roots on some other note than the tonic.
  7. Two extra tracks, same session AFAIK. Not sure if they were even intended for this album, though--on one of them ("Lover") the "leader" doesn't even take a solo.

I always had the feeling that he was one of those guys who chases down as many top-notch players to play with as possible in a way that makes me a little queasy: I guess there's honest admiration there, but also it seems self-promoting to me. There's a trace of the baseball-card collector to it. -- Haven't heard too much, though the one I did actually have to review (Radio Free Europa) was pretty damn dull.
  9. You heard the new, much-expanded edition of the Blackhawk date? Was wondering if that'd change your mind. I say this despite my not liking it much. Mobley sounds ill at ease & the lack of chemistry with Miles is palpable (they barely play together, in fact). Yes Soul Station is marvellous, though it took a while for me to warm to it (first time I'd encountered Mobley actually)--it sounded like he was running changes with his favourite licks a bit too much. Wouldn't put it that way now, though I'll have to revisit the album to see how my opinion's changed. Anyway, thanks for the pick.
  10. Actually, aside from the duo with Drake, the other worthwhile Tsahar recordings I've heard are the two trios with Cooper Moore on Hopscotch--Digital Primitives & Lost Brother. Those ones are definitely worth more than $5!
  11. Sounds like headline-grabbing quasi-science to me. Given that cellphones are basically glorified radios, then what's any more dangerous about them than radios? The good doc doesn't propose any causal mechanism, so it's hard to put any credence in the claims.
  12. I have no idea if the CD's any good, but the concert was enough to suggest that I should give it a wide berth. He's one of those players who always seems "OK" to me--not terrible, but why would you go out of your way to hear him? The duo with Drake on Ayler Records is OK, I recall (though it went into the to-trade pile the moment I finished the review); I think the only other place I've really heard him was Hugh Ragin's Feel the Sunshine, where he sounds like a poor man's David Murray or James Carter.
  13. Dredging up an old thread because I was listening to a CD today & it hit me: I really, really, really don't like "Lover" as a jazz standard. (I like the original appearance in Love Me Tonight, of course, where it's delivered by Jeanette Macdonald with a horse.) It's one of those tunes that seems to encourage solos that go on & on & on without much shape, & unlike other "play really fast & try out your licks" tunes like "Giant Steps" it's not even a sequence of chords I find interesting when heard ad nauseam. Let alone the darn melody.
  14. Caught that trio (Tshar/Parker/Ibarra) live about the time of the CD's release. Uh, it stunk.
  15. Kingdom Come is pretty so-so, agreed (that's the one with Sunny Murray, right?). I haven't really checked out much Gayle outside of Touchin on Trane because that one always seemed SO MUCH better than the other Gayle I've heard. (But as I said, DO check out that solo piano disc on Tompkins Square. Much better than the piano tracks on Kingdom Come would make you think.) Caught him playing material from T on T live with Ali + Wilber Morris in the 1990s--great stuff.
  16. I don't know the difference myself! Please explain.... The 50-hour country feature sounds great (since it's evident from the program listing that it's the REAL stuff).
  17. Yes: the real problem here is simply that most people eat too much prepackaged food rather than making it themselves. It does drive me nuts that where I work the salt shakers in the lunch room are inevitably EMPTY. Rrrrrr....
  18. The Chinese food here is fine (preferably in the Richmond Hill area not Spadina), but I'd actually recommend the Korean restaurants if you're looking for great Asian food in Toronto. Yes, the only venue listed on that Jazz in Toronto site is the Rex. Things are bad here but they aren't THAT bad...! There's stuff at the Trane, Tranzac, &c.
  19. You gotta be kidding. The Toronto jazz scene is at an all-time low, with all the major clubs except the Rex having died in the past four years & the festival a weak shadow of its former self. Lots of reasons to visit Toronto but the jazz scene isn't one of them! (though if it's other music you're interested in it's fine)
  20. That's terrific news about the reissues. Long wanted to hear this music, not to mention the previously unreleased stuff...!
  21. Just got this promo flyer. Great news, even if it's unlikely that I'll be going to Switzerland for it! --N * CONCERT ANNOUNCEMENT Stadttheater, Schaffhausen Mittwoch, 21. 22. Well, they are sometimes heavily edited, though. I found the most surprising thing was Green's lowly rating of the BB King track, actually.
