  1. Would someone please supply me with the following information on the New Directions recording: 1) Date of recording 2) Producer 3) Recording engineer 4) Name and location of recording studio 5) Photographer responsible for the front cover Thanks for your time and effort. B)
  2. Whoa boy! For a moment there, I thought this thread's title was: Organissimo In Dockers! I feared the worst - that they had already sold out to the mainstream.
  3. with all due respect, i'm skeptical of these reports of "hey, i bought this new, improved version, and what do you know, it sounds much better!" as a psychologist, i'm well aware of the power of anticipation to influence our perceptions. what i'd like to hear is someone conducting a blind comparision test that removes this factor, along with controls for possible differences in output levels (a crucial element in rvg comparisons). i'm not saying these sacds might not sound better than previous remasters. but i question if all of them are improved, and how much improvement they offer. i guess i just want proof i can rely on.
  4. you're all wrong. it ain't what you have or what you listen to, it's where you listen to it!
  5. 1. it's not spam if you signed up to receive their emails. 2. you won't get mosiac news from blue note. 3. remove your name from bn's list and get your deletion/new release news here.
  6. count me among those who received a coupon by email that i couldn't use. i emailed them on the 31st and they have yet to reply. i was very clear about the item i wanted (an akiyoshi import titles that's on sale) and what the price would be if i used the coupon. i just sent another email saying if i didn't hear from them in a day, they could kiss my business goodbye. actually, that's not such a big deal these days. i used to buy a lot of stuff from them, but in the past year i haven't because of their shrinking jazz catalog and increasing prices. oh well.
  7. where did you hear about a scheduled dizzy reece mosaic select?
  8. I hope to attend one of this band's performances in New York this spring. They're playing at the Blue Note March 16-21. The website lists the personnel as: Conrad Herwig, trombone; Brian Lynch, trumpet; Dave Valentin, flute; Mario Rivera, saxophone; Edsel Gomez, piano; John Benitez, bass; Robby Ameen, drums; and Richie Flores, percussion. I've heard bad things about shows at the Blue Note (too exspensive, too little space), but I'll make an exception for these guys. Btw, i read that the first cd, Another Kind of Blue: The Latin Side of Miles was recorded live at the Blue Note. Volume two, titled Sketches of Spain Plus Seven is scheduled to be released in 2005.
  9. Can anyone comment on the quality of the remastering of the JRVG reissue of Dizzy Reece's Soundin' Off? Also, what is your opinion of the music itself? How does it compare with Starbright and Blues In Trinity? Thanks in advance.
  10. actually, this disc was released in 2001. i'm not sure if it's really out of print, per se, or merely "undistributed." i came across a notice from navarre corp. stating that they would no longer distribute vertical jazz titles as of September 2003. the label's website is still up, however, and they continue to list this cd and its follow up. btw, the website also mentions two upcoming performances of the classical jazz quartet: March 18, 2004 at Orchestra Hall, Detroit, MI and April 14, 2004 at the Williams Center for the Arts, Lafayette College in Easton, PA.

or even worse, it's like they don't care enough to be appropriately devious. after all, we're just a bunch of lowly jazz snobs, right?
  12. I just saw a used copy of this disc for $7.99 at a nearby store called Planet Records. They also had the group's follow-up Plays Bach. You can contact them at: planet@tiac.net.
  13. not at the one i visited last night.
  14. thanks h.h.
  15. unfortunately, i won't be in chicago until the 1st of april.
  16. I've been to the JRM before. Although the selection is quite good, the prices are rather high. In addition to Reckless, I may check out Out of the Past Records, the Record Emporium, and Laurie’s Planet of Sound. Thanks to those who responded. Keep those suggestions coming!
  17. Other than the Jazz Record Mart and Dusty Groove, what are the best new/used cd stores in the Chicago area for jazz? Thanks in advance.
  18. playing with monk could be frustrating: "hey monk! sit down, will ya? stop dancing around and play your hand. geez!"
  19. Can anyone provide me with information on the first two volumes of Jeremy Pelt's live MP3 series? Specifically, I'm looking for personnel and track titles. Thanks in advance.
  20. okay, so the "hey ya" chorus features high-pitched background harmony a la mark volman & howard kaylan. big deal. so does "love my way" by the psychedelic furs. of course, the furs used the real thing.
  21. i think the barbecue at blue smoke is overated and overpriced. i much prefer brother jimmy's on the west side at 80th & Amsterdam, around the corner from nycd, a good cd store. cd shopping, barbecue, and live jazz. now there's an evening!
  22. Here's what I found (hope it's correct): Robert Garner Jr. (a.k.a. Bobby LaVell) has recently played saxophone, clarinet and flute in the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He's appeared on recordings by Grover Washington, Mark Elf, and the Saxemble, among others. He's based in Yonkers, New York and leads his own big band called the Hudson Jazz Orchestra. Here's a link to some sound clips from a recording by the HJO: hudson jazz orchestra. He's also the son of Memphis mainstay Robert 'Honeymoon' Garner; pianist, organist, and singer; who died in 2002 at age 71. BTW, the senior Garner also played with big George, along with Louis Smith and many other Memphis-based musicians.

    Pat Martino

My favorite Martino is: Backed by a great rhythm section (Cedar Walton, Ben Tucker and Walter Perkins), this 1967 recording also features some stellar solos by Joe Farrell on tenor sax and flute.
