a google search of "scat singing" will provide background information without the porn. my two favorite scat singers are ella fitzgerald and betty carter. mack the knife (the complete ella in berlin - live 1960) and the audience with betty carter are two recommended discs. this inquiry sparks renews my interest in an old question: how did it come to be called "scat?" what, if any, connection is there to those things "scatological," i.e., having to do with excrement or excretory functions? the only thing i've come up with so far is that maybe when the first person tried to scat, it sounded like shit.

Hey all, I've had this disc on my want list for some time. It's a 1998 recording on the Japanese BMG label featuring Allen with the Tommy Flanagan Trio. I've never heard this date, so I thought I'd ask someone who owns the cd if it's worth the big bucks that online merchants are asking. Thanks in advance.

I have around 130 imports in cardboard sleeves, including JVRGs, VICJs, and Impulse Best 50 series. As far as plastic sleeves go, I buy online at Bags Unlimited. They also have Tyvek inner sleeves. Heck, they even have plastic sleeves for long boxes! Check them out.

another for this recording, and for kenny washington, in any setting!

in the meantime, it would be nice if people deleted their duplicate posts/threads.

Musical instruments you could do without in jazz.

i really enjoy the trombone too. still, there does seem to be a lot of jokes aimed specifically at trombone players. Here's a few more: What do you call a trombonist with a beeper and a cellular telephone? An optimist. How many trombonists does it take to change a lightbulb? Just one, but he’ll do it too loudly. How do you know when a trombone player is at your door? The doorbell drags. And my personal favorite: How can you tell which kid on a playground is the child of a trombonist? He doesn’t know how to use the slide, and he can’t swing. -
i don't think he's asking for anyone to take responsibility for his decision. he's merely asking for some objective information on which to form his own judgment. so, has michael c. corroborated reinier's observations or not?

Thanks, I owe you one!

Whoa boy! For a moment there, I thought this thread's title was: Organissimo In Dockers! I feared the worst - that they had already sold out to the mainstream.

with all due respect, i'm skeptical of these reports of "hey, i bought this new, improved version, and what do you know, it sounds much better!" as a psychologist, i'm well aware of the power of anticipation to influence our perceptions. what i'd like to hear is someone conducting a blind comparision test that removes this factor, along with controls for possible differences in output levels (a crucial element in rvg comparisons). i'm not saying these sacds might not sound better than previous remasters. but i question if all of them are improved, and how much improvement they offer. i guess i just want proof i can rely on.

you're all wrong. it ain't what you have or what you listen to, it's where you listen to it!

1. it's not spam if you signed up to receive their emails. 2. you won't get mosiac news from blue note. 3. remove your name from bn's list and get your deletion/new release news here.

count me among those who received a coupon by email that i couldn't use. i emailed them on the 31st and they have yet to reply. i was very clear about the item i wanted (an akiyoshi import titles that's on sale) and what the price would be if i used the coupon. i just sent another email saying if i didn't hear from them in a day, they could kiss my business goodbye. actually, that's not such a big deal these days. i used to buy a lot of stuff from them, but in the past year i haven't because of their shrinking jazz catalog and increasing prices. oh well.

where did you hear about a scheduled dizzy reece mosaic select?

I hope to attend one of this band's performances in New York this spring. They're playing at the Blue Note March 16-21. The website lists the personnel as: Conrad Herwig, trombone; Brian Lynch, trumpet; Dave Valentin, flute; Mario Rivera, saxophone; Edsel Gomez, piano; John Benitez, bass; Robby Ameen, drums; and Richie Flores, percussion. I've heard bad things about shows at the Blue Note (too exspensive, too little space), but I'll make an exception for these guys. Btw, i read that the first cd, Another Kind of Blue: The Latin Side of Miles was recorded live at the Blue Note. Volume two, titled Sketches of Spain Plus Seven is scheduled to be released in 2005.

Can anyone comment on the quality of the remastering of the JRVG reissue of Dizzy Reece's Soundin' Off? Also, what is your opinion of the music itself? How does it compare with Starbright and Blues In Trinity? Thanks in advance.

actually, this disc was released in 2001. i'm not sure if it's really out of print, per se, or merely "undistributed." i came across a notice from navarre corp. stating that they would no longer distribute vertical jazz titles as of September 2003. the label's website is still up, however, and they continue to list this cd and its follow up. btw, the website also mentions two upcoming performances of the classical jazz quartet: March 18, 2004 at Orchestra Hall, Detroit, MI and April 14, 2004 at the Williams Center for the Arts, Lafayette College in Easton, PA.

or even worse, it's like they don't care enough to be appropriately devious. after all, we're just a bunch of lowly jazz snobs, right?
-
I just saw a used copy of this disc for $7.99 at a nearby store called Planet Records. They also had the group's follow-up Plays Bach. You can contact them at: planet@tiac.net.
