  1. as far as i know, you've got two choices: the mosaic and the jrvg (tocj-9475). early records has the import for 2000 yen, which is about 14.68 euros plus shipping. there's always the slim chance that someone will ebay an open copy of the jrvg, but i'd recommend you go for the mosaic too. in the end, it's a better bargain.

i really like the aptly titled healing the pain. very emotional stuff. i also recommend people check out the collectables reissue of my baby, a soulful 1965 recording for vee-jay featuring green with wynton kelly, donald byrd, jimmy heath, larry ridley, and jimmy cobb. here's a link to some sound clips: my baby
  3. challenging? yes. rewarding? incredibly so. and much more so than most of miles' later work imo. even if someone did have trouble fully enjoying this material at first, i still wouldn't hesitate recommending it. i have no doubt that in the long run they will come to cherish it. how's that for an endorsement!
  4. if i'm not mistaken, the order of the tracks in the box set is chronological and therefore it differs from the track sequence of the original issues/reissues.
  5. Yes, Gordon plays a musician named Rolando. It's a small part, but I recall that he plays piano in one of the scenes. I like this film a lot. It was produced by Penny Marshall and features great performances by Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro.
  6. there's music included too?!?
  7. I'm very much looking forward to another jazz weekend in the City March 19-21. Here's my itinerary: FRIDAY NIGHT At the Jazz Standard: Charles Tolliver Big Band, with Gary Bartz, James Spaulding, Billy Harper, Craig Handy, Howard Johnson, Earl Gardner, David Guy, David Weiss, Leron Thomas, Clark Gayton, Jason Jackson, Aaron Johnson, George Cables, Cecil McBee, & Victor Lewis. At the Blue Note: ANOTHER KIND OF BLUE-THE LATIN SIDE OF MILES DAVIS featuring Conrad Herwig, Brian Lynch, Dave Valentin, Mario Rivera, Edsel Gomez, John Benitez, Robby Ameen, & Richie Flores. SATURDAY NIGHT At the Iridium: MONKSILAND-THELONIOUS MONK TRIBUTE with Steve Lacy, Roswell Rudd, & Dave Douglas. At Smoke: Louis Hayes & Buster Williams Quartet featuring Vincent Herring. Of course, I'll be trying to nab those hard-to-find imports and oop's during the day and visit some of my favorite eateries (Virgil's, Amy Ruth’s, and Brother Jimmy’s BBQ). If anyone is interested in hooking up while I'm in town, feel free to PM me. B)
  8. Sonny's scheduled to perform at the Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors Festival on August 10th.
  9. Not just Jeff Beck, but this short-lived lineup featured Jimmy Page on guitar as well! It's really a fluke that they appeared in the movie, though. The director really wanted the Who (and the guitar-smashing Townsend), but for whatever reason, they didn't make it. BTW, guitar buffs will notice that the guitar Beck destroys is not a valuable Les Paul, his regular axe, but a much cheaper Gibson.
  10. Can't get rid of this cat, named Cartman. He don't waste time with chicken pot pie, he goes straight for the java!
  11. and it ain't oop neither. what's going on paul?
  12. there's also a used copy on amazon.com for under $8.
  13. believe me, there's no love lost on aric in my house. but didn't this infamous "trade" agreement boil down to this: "i'll trade you this cd for a copy of MJ that you plan to steal from starbucks." if so, it's hard to sympathize with someone who made a contract to receive stolen goods. when you think about it, it's not surprising that someone who planned to steal would also welch on a "deal."
  14. i wonder if the problem lies with mosaic? i ask because i shipped a cd via air letter post to a board member in canada recently. it usually takes less than a week, but for some reason it took almost 3 weeks to arrive. that's nothing, however, compared to a cd i shipped first class to an address here in the u.s. last november. believe it or not, it finally arrived on feb. 12!!!
  15. i don't know if this will be helpful to you, but readerware aw allows you to catalog your cd collection with a simple bar code scan. there is a barcode reader called cuecat that goes for less than $10 on ebay that is supposed to be quite effective.
  16. a google search of "scat singing" will provide background information without the porn. my two favorite scat singers are ella fitzgerald and betty carter. mack the knife (the complete ella in berlin - live 1960) and the audience with betty carter are two recommended discs. this inquiry sparks renews my interest in an old question: how did it come to be called "scat?" what, if any, connection is there to those things "scatological," i.e., having to do with excrement or excretory functions? the only thing i've come up with so far is that maybe when the first person tried to scat, it sounded like shit.
  17. of the tenor players you mentioned, i'd heartily recommend: tim warfield - jazz is... don braden - wish list chris potter - movin' in, gratitude jesse davis - high standards jimmy green - introducing jimmy greene and some you didn't mention: walt weiskopf - man of many colors craig handy - split second timing david sanchez - travesia ralph bowen - soul proprietor
  18. couw, unfortunately, i didn't get your pm. feel free to email me at: rviti@rcn.com.
  19. Hey all, I've had this disc on my want list for some time. It's a 1998 recording on the Japanese BMG label featuring Allen with the Tommy Flanagan Trio. I've never heard this date, so I thought I'd ask someone who owns the cd if it's worth the big bucks that online merchants are asking. Thanks in advance.
  20. I have around 130 imports in cardboard sleeves, including JVRGs, VICJs, and Impulse Best 50 series. As far as plastic sleeves go, I buy online at Bags Unlimited. They also have Tyvek inner sleeves. Heck, they even have plastic sleeves for long boxes! Check them out.
  21. another for this recording, and for kenny washington, in any setting!
  22. in the meantime, it would be nice if people deleted their duplicate posts/threads.
  23. i really enjoy the trombone too. still, there does seem to be a lot of jokes aimed specifically at trombone players. Here's a few more: What do you call a trombonist with a beeper and a cellular telephone? An optimist. How many trombonists does it take to change a lightbulb? Just one, but he’ll do it too loudly. How do you know when a trombone player is at your door? The doorbell drags. And my personal favorite: How can you tell which kid on a playground is the child of a trombonist? He doesn’t know how to use the slide, and he can’t swing.
  24. i don't think he's asking for anyone to take responsibility for his decision. he's merely asking for some objective information on which to form his own judgment. so, has michael c. corroborated reinier's observations or not?
  25. Thanks, I owe you one!
