  1. you're right, it hasn't. however, you can download the mp3 files (made from the original vinyl) here: emusic
  2. Yes, it was a very special evening at Carnegie Hall. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I might try to see the orchestra once more at Birdland before they really call it quits. As far as recommendations, you can get a taste of the 70's band with the Novus sampler The Toshiko Akiyoshi/Tabackin Big Band. There's a copy at Half.com for only 7.99. Here's the link: Toshiko. After that, you may choose to get some of the original recordings, which have been remastered and reissued in Japan this past year.

I'm not sure whether this is the same recording, but a cd by that name was issued in May of 2002 by the Chicago-based label Rerooted. Here's a link: African Herbs.

Although AMG does not list the Camden reissues, they do list the earlier, identical Kaz reissues. To read AMG's reviews of some of this material, just click on the following links for the original issues on the Chiaroscuro label: Soweto Capetown Fringe Black Lightning If you really want to read helpful opinions of this music, the most recent edition of the Penguin Guide reviews each of the Camden reissues, awarding them 3-4 stars. Personally, I like these discs, but not as much as the later African Marketplace, Water From An Ancient Well, and African River.
  5. I'm very much looking forward to the 30th anniversary concert with the Akiyoshi Orchestra Friday night at Carnegie Hall. They're featuring the U.S. debut of her latest large-scale composition: Hiroshima Rising from the Abyss. I'm a big fan of Akiyoshi, and the chance to hear jazz at Carnegie is an exciting prospect. Best seats in the house are only $40, which seems very reasonable to me. Chris, are you planning to attend? How about anyone else?

  7. i spotted a used copy of the u.s. reissue at a local store for $7.99. they do mail order. here's the link if anyone's interested: stereo jack's.
  8. I "discovered" some of Tolliver's Strata East recordings through the Charley reissues last year. IMHO, they are well worth checking out. They aren't easily categorized - that's one of the reasons I still listen to them. Here's a link to Tolliver's page on the Strata East website, including some sound clips: Tolliver. As far as obtaining the Charley reissues, Dusty Groove is my first choice.
  9. That was a Candid album too. Colours, I believe.
  10. and check this out! Why Do GreatRazors.com Razor Blades Last Longer? All of the razors we sell are Cryogenically Tempered (frozen) down to -300 F to improve the strength & durability of the blade. Our Cryogenic Tempering Process makes our razors the longest lasting razors you can buy. Whatever brand you are using now, you will see what a difference our process makes in shave quality and life. They actually shave even better than what you are using now. Customers with light beards report using the same cartridge for 7 months. Everyone's hair is different, so your results will vary. Multiply the number of shaves you get now with your normal razor times 4. This is how long our razors should last, Guaranteed! GreatRazors cost about the same as what you would pay at your local grocery store. Since GreatRazors last so long, buying fewer blades will save you 60%. what do you think of dem apples?
  11. Next question for us manual users: how often do you change the blades? I change mine once a week.
  12. If I was a fair-haired lad with a hardly noticeable beard, or a rich guy on whom stubble means success, I'd use a Braun 7680 Syncro System Logic Shaver. But since I'm Italian and often work until 8pm, I rely on the closer shave of a Gillette Sensor razor. I haven't tried a triple blade yet, but this discussion has me considering making the jump and maybe even buying a fancy handle made of rosewood or ebony.
  13. I just heard that singer Robert Palmer has died of a heart attack at age 54. I can't say that I've listened to anything he's done in a long time, but I think people that know him by songs like Addicted to Love and his work with overblown rock outfits like Power House are missing something special. I remember Palmer from his two excellent initial releases in the mid-70's: Sneaking Sally Through the Alley and Pressure Drop. Before anyone dismisses him altogether, I urge you to check out these two recordings.
  14. no booklet, but there is info on the back inserts (personnel, dates, etc.)
  15. i appreciate the heads up, but $1 off an already inflated media mail price of $2.49 is "way down?" That's $7 to mail 4 discs!
  16. most people's recommendations seem to be based on "i've had no trouble with burns using this brand." as i remember it, the original discussion focused on the argument that some of the brands mentioned here might not faithfully deliver the music you burned 5, 10, 15, ... years from now. something about unstable dyes and other factors. i seem to recall that mitsui was one of the brands that received high marks in the simulated longevity tests.
  17. and here it is!
  18. for those who prefer store-bought to home remedies, i can recommend: Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover doesn't just cover up skunk odors, it removes the source of skunk odors from pets, people, clothing and carpets. It completely removes the source of the odor, rather than covering it with a masking scent.
  19. 12.99 at www.cheap-cds.com. that's 15.41 with s&h.
  20. the mark elf trio will be at ryles in cambridge on friday. also on that night in cambridge is african-german vocalist lyambiko at the regattabar. arturo sandoval will be appearing at sculler's on both friday and saturday night.
  21. not when you consider the fact that you can either order it directly from candid or buy the japanese reissue online for much less.
  22. i enjoyed mehldau a lot. i confess that i'm not familiar with a lot of his work, but i'll certainly be investigating his music in the future. the band as a whole worked quite well together, and of course, bill stewart is always great to see live. btw, i checked out the times article on the dolphy project. despite the glowing review, specific mention of the quality of bartz's contribution was conspicuously absent.
  23. Will a review from a visiting Beantowner do? Overall, it was a good show. I'm a big fan of Jeremy Pelt and Stefon Harris, and they both played brilliantly. I was somewhat disappointed by Gary Bartz, who I think may be past his prime. I had a similar reaction to his performance with Sphere earlier this year. I would have preferred to see Oliver Lake in Bartz's role. I think he would have made a more solid and Dolphy-inspired contribution to this fine tribute band. While I was in town, I also caught Peter Bernstein with Brad Mehldau at Smoke and the Toshiko Akiyoshi Orchestra at Birdland. Both shows were excellent. I've already got tickets for Akiyoshi's Carnegie Hall concert in October. Who else is going?!?
  24. there are a few sealed copies of art deco available at a local record store. as another board member recently discovered, they are quite willing to do mail order. here's the link: stereo jack's. for the fun of it, mention my name to them.
  25. I know I'm in the minority, but I find this guy rather arrogant and offensive. I have no doubt he cares about the animal kingdom. However, too often he entertains by making animals defend themselves. The show with the cobra and his habit of grabbing crocs are just two examples. I prefer a less interactive, more naturalistic approach to observing animals, whom I respect enormously. BTW, I also boycott horse and dog racing and circuses that use animals. Just call me a bleeding-heart, tree-hugging, animal-loving liberal. P.S. Gee, guess I'm not the only one, as Kenny posted his comments while I was proof-reading my post.
