In Your Opinion, Is There Such a Thing as an Ideal Album Duration?
JSngry replied to HutchFan's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Do you feel imposed upon by that record? If so, hey: A record has no charted-by-law responsibility to be liked, by anybody. I'm kinda like, you know, if I feel a record is imposing on me, really imposing, you know, like I DO hate it, I REALLY hate it, I shut it off. Not that hard, and I keep score. If it happens too often from the same person, fuck them, right? My prerogative. They can make any kind of record them and their audiences like, or will be thought to like, and still, fuck them. If I continue to let them waste my time, if I continue to be imposed on them, that's on me for not having enough strength of character to just turn that shit off and do something else with my time. Own your time, you know? Your time. Oh, and yes, Braxton (to show that your point, as weird as it is to the rigidity it seems to be advocated, is not without some merit. First Arista, I know he got some people to buy that record just for this. Now, whether or not they bought another AB album again, ever, hmmm...but the did buy this one. OTOH, people were more open to being curious back then than they are now, and records were cheaper. And then, this: So, you know, been there done that, onward. -

Well, sure, but what did he have to do the just play his saxophone to the point where that music came out of it when he did? -
Tonight, Jaap van Zweden's farewell gig leading the SO on Beethoven 9. It was magical - the band was in a zone, and seriously that piece is...yeah. Bye, wish I had gotten in on the van Zweeden transformation sooner than I did, but I caught enough of it to know that it was real, and that it mattered. Adios, Maestro! This guy, otoh, ain't goin' nowhere, ever, not as long as there is information.

Per AMG, that CD clocks in at 62 minutes. If albums should "max out around 40 minutes".. -

11 CDs of standards, seems like a sell-out to me. -
As of last night this gem of a station is no longer available. However, Roku has a buttload full of PD stations, and I've switched over to this one: https://channelstore.roku.com/details/39925/publicdoma Pretty good selection not just of movies but of all sorts of things. It's now gonna be my first choice, inaugurated today by another look at an old favorite: Supposedly this is not US PD, but/so...there it is anyway.

Why is Don Lamond playing a James Brown tune? That should have been stopped before it happened. I mean, I love Don Lamond, but.... -

Here's what you missed, or didn't, that's your call. Frank Strozier, and then...just a WHOLE lot of noise! -

The great thing about TWA was that each side was complete in itself, had a beginning, middle, and end. Not just a great double album, but 4 great single "albums". Don Ellis' Autumn, I only - only - play Side two. Played Side 1 at most 3 times, and that was when I first got the record (1972 or so). So when I think of it - and recommend it - as a "great album", I really mean a great album side, albeit one that's about 30 minutes long. -

There's quite a few now-classic albums" that are classic to me for one side of an LP. -
Carla Bley in the New Yorker
JSngry replied to Brad's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I wish somebody could get Toshiko (with or without Lws) to reminisce at length like this. We're in somewhat uncharted waters here, aren't we? "Jazz couples" where there's not a singer involved and where both are, by any reasonable definition, old, perhaps elderly. Seeing Carla Bley talk in 2017/2016 and comparing that to what I know of her talking from, say 40+ years ago is...humbling. If you don't hear how she very subtly/fleetingly talks about how she learned ho to have things (or however she put it), these things are basic - home, job, business, identity. How many jazz people get this old and are left with little or any of that? And how many "eccentric" jazz people? And how many female eccentric old jazz people? Roller-Skating Nordic-American Church Girl goes to the big city, is in the room for god only knows what kind of conversations with Cecil and Bill (the mind reels and shudders in equal measure) and in the bedroom for god only knows what kind of conversations with Paul Bley (ditto), and comes out of it, not just alive, but alive and secure and actually kind of sweet. Forget the music (or not), as a human story, this is not a commonly told tale. It's actually pretty amazing. Enjoy it while it's still around to be enjoyed, not that many things are. -
I'm really not feeling a need to "pick favorites" with these. The ones I like, I said so, the ones I wither didn't (or liked a little less), I said that too. The good stuff is all really good, and and some point, it does me good just to hear it. I'm at the point in life (jaded, burnt out, blissed out, whatever) where human excellence is its own reward in my book. And excellence exists quite apart from "style" or even/especially "taste". The only thing I feel ambiguous about is the Shaw cut. It still seems that there should be a better mastering available. But maybe that's just Buddy Rich using all the air in the room! Overall, a really excellent compilation of human musical excellence, seriously.
