  1. Is it possible to get Springsteen but not really like him. If so, that's me. Mingus, otoh...
  2. Big fan of the WB TV westerns from then (were they all on ABC? Seems like they were, the audio all that that ABC "snap" timbre...and there's another thing, how the broadcast networks each had a distinctive audio and video "signature", no idea how that happened). RIP Mr. Walker.
  3. and all kidding aside, I do appreciate the unique qualities of the instrument, and enjoy hearing it in contexts both traditional and otherwise. Add Rufus Harley to the list! I would, however, advocate for war being transitioned to becoming an indoor event. Seems to me that might settle down some of this shit.
  4. Not hating on bagpipes, just the notion of people playing them in a public place.
  5. I drove past a park one day while a guy was practicing bagpipes. Did not call the police, but did get very concerned.
  6. It's immediately pre-Perry, and he plays a good guy (an attorney!) who gets royally fucked over by Angela Lansbury. Don't know if it was intentional or not, but it seems like there's a bit of homo-erotic subtext n his character from start to finish. YMMV on that though.
  7. If I'm going to "argue" anything about Carla Bley, it's just that she's doing what she wants to be doing with all of it, and criticism of her musics seem too often to be based on something the listener wants but does not get, which of course is not at all a problem for anybody unless and until the difference is perceived as a deficiency. Same thing with, for example, Paul Desmond, he was who he was, he was always going to be who he was, and if somebody doesn't like that, then it's not because of any deficiency. To that end, I do very much believe that she's got the whole "evolved Puritan" thing at her core, has always had it, and it's too late to turn back now. Again, I don't see that as in any way a determent. It's a determinative factor. I was really struck, though, and again, by how frail she looks now, and how she has these ticks from time to time, how she goes from lucidity to withdrawn back to lucidity. And this one with her and Steve Swallow, you very much get the sense of a old couple growing olderer together...dare I call it sweet? We should all be so lucky to grown old with this type of relationship to prop us up as the years take life way bit by irrevocable bit.

  9. I can get why somebody might not "like" this, but do you HATE it, do you REALLY HATE it?
  10. Is holly a tree or a bush/shrub? Indeed, trying to close out this deliverable in <24 hrs.
  11. If than, then than. Then, in Rome, quack like a duck? Why a duck?
  12. First names only, please!
  13. Well, that's been fixed.
  14. Now reading an obituary?
  15. Oh yeah, Fancy Chamber Music is a very good listen, as is all that run of ECM records from the 70s into...whenever. Those records are a voice speaking clearly and confidently.
  16. I found the 2nd LMO album, Not In Our Name to be quite memorable, as I do, again, her Christmas record. Also, Night-Glo (sic). That record has so many little details down in the cracks of the details....it's a very rewarding listen on :loop" if you want to check out details. That's a big thing in the best of her music, imo, the little quirky details that are not always set up on top of the music. And this is an essential jazz recording, imo, if only for the still-definitive reading of "Ida Lupino": If I'm remembering correctly, she had no real chance at "band-leading" until her and Paul Bley split, and she hooked up with Mantler. So she's got two histories, really, that of composer, and that of band leader (and, I suppose, that of label-director as well), and they only sometimes overlap. I do find a lot of her "later" work to be less than engaging, but that's because there's so much humor, and humor is about the most subjective taste of them all. Some of it seems silly to me, like it's a family joke that you gotta be in the family to really get. But then there's stuff like "Boo To you To", with that definitive call-your-bluff line "Do you really HATE it?" But then there's the cutesy stuff, and, you do that thing Carla, it's ok, and thank you for the chance to get up and go make a sandwich. But I still listen, even in passing,, because, really, she always has that Evolved Puritan thing going on, and there's really no place else to get that in jazz. That's her niche, and she comes by it honestly, created it honestly, and maintains it honestly. Inspired by this thread, I created a Carla Bley Radio station on Pandora and just let it rip, hardly any thumbs up or down, just to see what would come up. It has been interesting!
  17. What other jazz musicians have been named after a tree? Is it a long list or a short one?
  18. Surprised this has gone unnoted here for as long as it had. RIP.
  19. They made two records with Louis. He has no problems with them, to put it mildly. Me myself, what they did on there own was really at all my bag, but as far as "good for what they were", from what I've heard of them, yeah, they were. What they were, though, you will decide for yourself. This is a good read: http://dippermouth.blogspot.com/2015/05/55-years-of-louie-and-dukes-of-dixieland_24.html
  20. Much love for Herbie, just not sure that I need him to make any more records for the marketplace.
