Erroll Garner's Blue Note (Overture To Dawn) Recordings
JSngry replied to romualdo's topic in Discography
My understanding/recollection is that these were from the collection of Timme Rosenkrantz (sp?) and over time never quite reached "official" status business-wise, kinda like some of the "Lost Books Of The Bible". -
Yeah, people distraught over the whole Chic in RR HOF thing might be well advised to back off and reconsider the bigger picture and the longer game just a little bit.

Yeah, that's the Rising Phoenix thread. What happened to the Krypton Homeland thread?

I recall when Natalie first broke with "This Will Be" and all that...there was a Rolling Stone(?) interview where she said something like she didn't really know Aretha Franklin's work, that's not what she really listened to, and she caught all kinds of hell for that, because she was having hits with Aretha's "voice" when Areethat wasn't doing well on the charts at all. It had to have been a giant head trip being Natalie Cole over the years. I have all kinds of respect (no pun intended) for her surviving and keeping on working on figuring it out.

Of all the things that could have gone horribly wrong here, none of them do. In these times and in this place, that's far from a minor triumph. Not only is the pitch spot on, so is the, and I hate to use this word because of the weapon-ness it's had over the years, "diction". Ironically(?), that's what Lawrence Welk complimented her father on, and in that context, you know, just what did he mean by that, huh? But in this case, I mean that she's clearly studied the lyric and chooses to present it with this quite specific "neutral" type of articulation. She could have slurred it around, twanged it, wove it in and out, and that would have been one interpretation, .but she chose to go here with it, and I think she did it excellently. So, perhaps unlike Welk, kudos not for what she chose to do, but to how excellently she did it..natural yet perfect yet natural. It don't sound like nobody but Natalie Cole. You try it. Go ahead, I dare ya'!

Not without interest! The label makes sense too, it's got that Lee Wiley "not really "jazz" but as much jazz as it is anything else" vibe to it, like who else is going to like this except people who don't hate jazz and really dig show tunes? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_Music_Shop_Records

Royal Bank of Scotland: Sell Everything!!!
JSngry replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Any economic model that has me worrying about oil prices going too low comes from a reward system not at all relevant to anybody I know. -
I love these drum line battles. It's as if the spirit of Max Roach inhabits all of them, knowingly or otherwise, just as spirits from before inhabited Max, Big Sid, Baby Dodds, it just goes on, forward and backward..Milford Graves, Shannon Jackson, unbroken. It's jsut kids, high school kids, who knows if in 5 years any of them will still be playing, and yet, for these moments, there they are.

I understand.

Lacy/Puma contained on a 2-CD Fresh Sounds issue, but that's probably not what you mean by "physical form".

First Complete Recording of Schönberg String Quartets (1936/37)
JSngry replied to Late's topic in Classical Discussion
Just now started the first quartet, and, yeah...passion aplenty, a getting of the music that goes deeper than the mathematics of the note choices into the underly phrase contours, the directions of the melodies, the rhythmic impetuses that drive music, any music, quite apart from notions of serialism/atonality. Performances like this (where you find them) of Schoenberg &, especially Webern, have opened my mind to the visceral truth of this particular period of music. I've always appreciated the "intellectual" truth of it but have never really been able to "get down" with it (Berg being an exception, for some reason, Berg just naturally works for me, always has). But this...how does one not respond to this at an immediate level? But as to these particular recording...yes. Visceral. -

I'm thinking I'd still have enough left over of buy the Fox News network and turn it into 24/7/365 CFL Action, right? Maybe even in 3D! -

JSngry replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
With a billion dollars...I think I'd buy the entire inventory of one entire Wal-Mart store, keep the receipt, load it all up into a ginormous fleet of moving vans, drive it out to the woods, set up a camp, and then return the whole thing, one item at a time, every hour on the hour, for how many ever years that took. Of course, I'd employ undocumented aliens (mostly, but not exclusively, Canadians, so as not to arouse suspicion) every step of the way, and since this would be in Texas, arm them with guns I bought at Bass Pro Center, and have them open carry at all times. Those guns, I'm not returning them! Failing that, I'd buy some good organic farm, move in, stay out of sight until it's time to eat, and otherwise leave them alone and ensure their continued viability. I'd still keep the guns, though. Agribusiness beware! -

I hope the Royal Bank of Scotland wins. They seem to be a bit nervous about money things these days, sure hate to see that! -

As have I...but need to get to listening to it. Wish there was more time, or more space or more...just more time and space to put it all into. -
