  2. WHOA, congratulations!
  3. You have been called by Mr. Caplan to give factual testimony, then? Even assuming that you're closer to being correct than not (as I am more or less willing to do at this point), the larger question remains - if this man/these guys are neither idiots or, to a far-lesser relevance, evil, then who gave them the assurances that releasing this would not be an act with serious consequences, and/or who gave them the boldass assurances that even if they DID run into some unpleasant consequences, that it would be covered, i.e. - don't worry if all kinds of financial/career shit RAINS down upon you, we got you covered. Who injected that into the process? And where are they now, and are they returning any of these guys' calls? If nobody in fact did that, and if they are in fact neither idiot nor evil, then that's the ballsiest move made in recent jazz history, far more than most of the music being made, for sure. And although, sure, gangster needs punished, still, gangster still be american hero. They had music that needed hearing, they got it heard, fuck the consequences, here's the music, here's the consequences. Fuck you, fuck us, fuck all of us, same room, same time, here's the music. But I seriously doubt that it's either that noble or that simple, any of it. Dodgy, for sure, but that's why you try to never be the last man standing on your dodgeball team. I really want to hear what Adam Holzman has to say about this.
  4. Are they planning to reissue the historical ("Gold") series as well?
  5. You know who was fun to listen to on the drive home? Bob Stewart in the mid-late 1970s, on KSAX-AM. Cat would play Unity and shit like that mixed in with Ronnie Laws and shit like that. Throw in commercials for various adult beverages and meeting places, local politicians, and competing car insurance companies, you had a ride home to a home that's not there anymore...and neither is Bob, which, eventually, is how it should be/will be, personal timing preferences/concerns not withstanding. Real life in real time on the exact opposite of commercial-free FM college radio.
  6. Arlene Sierra, if you're willing to gamble on possible futures rather than presently finished. Also, I've found this a good one to get tangled up in:
  7. If it becomes a democracy without first being a meritocracy, you got a problem.
  8. Because what would Giuliani-and-beyond NYC be without local drama played large? Serious answer with snark unavoidable.
  9. Right. My point was that the "you shoulda been here a few minutes ago" is one of the oldest lines in the book, and that if Mr. Morgenstern had indeed been there those few minutes earlier, who would have answered the door? Elsewhere, somewhere, I heard/read something about somebody saying they walked in on Sonny Rollins and he really was levitating. Not, like, 30 feet up in the air or anything, but an inch or so.. I'd believe it about Sonny Rollins before I'd believe it about Charles Lloyd in the 1960s, I'll tell you that much right now, and not just because Sonny went deep to seriously study that stuff, either.
  10. But now, hold on, wait a sec - am I misremembering my history, or was not a lot of Charles Lloyd's popularity at the time dismissed by those "in the know" as being a combination of Lloyd's own personal/extra-musical charisma and Avakian's PR skills? Meaning simply that Avakian was already known for the ability to take a good story and make it bigger? I mean, I have no reason to doubt the Newport story, works for me. But I could see how some Ellingtonians would have considered Avakian kind of a jive cat (some of those guys, I get the impression, would find anybody a jive cat), just because, and knowing it would not be good for their jobs (current or future) to just put it like that, directed those general sentiments into reactions like that. And I'm equally sure that Schapp had been around enough of all sides of it up close enough to have issues of his own, and would not be predisposed to shutting that thread down just to preserve a legend, or whatever. Now here's a serious (and honest) question - what, if/any, has Schapp's attitude towards George Wein been over the years? Frankly, I think they're probably all assholes, and probably all more than a little bit crazy. But a grateful nation thanks them for their service nevertheless.
  11. I don't discount the possibility of humans levitating (seriously, I don't...highly unlikely and/or damn near impossible without some really fundamental rewiring of the brain relative to Newtonian principles, and who's got time for that these days?, yes. But absolutely imposible, no.), but the problem always arises - how do you levitate and answer the door at the same time? That's some Tesla-ian problematics, right there.
  12. That Syd Nathan clip is awesome.
  13. Wilbur Ware, made readable for your listening pleasure!
  14. What's more upsetting here, the notion that somebody would try to piss on George Avakian's shoes, or that somebody would even think about pissing on George Avakian's shoes?
  15. What I'm getting from Clem is that Phil Schapp was probably always a dork of sorts, a really dorky kid who never "fit in" with his peers, and who found a "place" amongst older black jazz musicians, who probably accepted him as a crazy, non-dangerous white guy whose sincerity was neither unwelcome nor unnoticed. I'm also getting that Clem feels that a lot of the "tone" of the Schaap-bashing "insiders" is rooted in the irritation that they feel about this misfit kid who never fit in with them or their world but could, apparently, go hang with "the help" with no worries. (and, although it's perhaps inevitable, I really do not mean any dispersion towards people like Avakian, Walter Schaap, or anybody else. But there is always a built in line between management and labor, and even between labor reps and front-line workers, inevitable and possibly even "correct" if one accepts the possibility of an imperfect world being the only perfect world) with not worries.) I think that Clem is on to something there, and to the degree that he is pleading the guy's case to be looked at as the type of person he is versus the type of person he is/has been "expected" to be due to position/class/race/whatever (and the irritations that stem from him failing to be that type), I think he's saying something to take heed of. But still, understanding a "fuck-up", even loving him, does not really excuse the fuck-ups themselves.
  16. I really did not know about Antibalas' involvement in Fela The Musical, just because that's not something I would have any type of any interest in. So all I can say about Antibalas is that I'm familiar with their music from before this whole Broadway thing, and I always enjoyed it for not even trying to do a straight Fela cop, because that's what would be lame. But the whole Broadway/Antibalas thing, that's what I mean about who would be stupid enough to intentionally get into something as potentially career-derailing as this over something like this. To wit, this Billboard headline: http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/6582967/ornette-coleman-lawsuit-antibalas-jordan So now, it's gone from being a lawsuit against one label and the two guy who run it, to being a lawsuit against a specific person, you know that band that played Fela The Musical, yeah, their trumpet player, him. He fucked Ornette. Either these folks got balls the size of Jupiter (and assurances of coverage from somewhere that are even bigger) or else....wow. Does this sound like somebody on either extreme of stupid OR evil? https://soundcloud.com/fun2know/f2k-ep-15-antibalas-trumpeter
  17. Well, now, I've been following your POV to this point, but this is where we will have to agree that you might want to broaden your imagination, because, yes, offensive.
  18. I have a, what they call it, OG Columbia with minimal surface noise, found it back in the 70s, and that's been more than rewarding. I just feel pissed that Schapp fucked it up and that Columbia has been too...whatever, to own that mistake, just man (or woman) up and fix that shit, ok?. Fuquitous in the bad way towards everybody, unless that's their idea of hell for Phil Schapp, to NEVER let it be forgotten what happened here. And even then, Columbia should not be playing god like that, least of all with Phil Schapp, and most of all with me and Chuck and Duke Ellington, people like that.
  19. I'm adopted myself, not sure what would the potential malice in claiming that about anybody, at least not that in and of itself. As to the other point, not just situation, but music, i.e. - all the gentrefentiled noise about too much bass and all that nonsense. Pay attention caucoids, pay attention and do your homework. Free your mind and your (b)ass will follow.
  20. And that's just wrong.
  21. I'm ok with all of this, really I am, crazy jazz people have been the norm in my experience, and none get more crazy than those who want to be one of them,, make no mistake, I love crazy jazz people and their crazy jazz music, crazy was the only valid response to those times and places, even veneer of crazy (or of sanity, as the case may be)., but it still pisses me off that he fucked up Such Sweet Thunder. Has the ever been fixed?
  22. Young guy's got what looks like a marginally better shirt/tie combo (never dug the tie-showing-through-the-collar thing too much, too...conspicuous, kinda like with trousers, if there is to be a bulge, it should be discreet, not blatant, otherwise you're not a player, you're just a manwhore), but I do not like the cut of that jacket, not one bit. I do kinda like that he's standing in front of a window, though, like, hey, if worse comes to worse, I can always jump. That's the spirit!
  23. 15 seconds of color bars and audio tone. For your convenience.
  24. For those keeping score at home.. Denardo's lawyers: http://www.reitlerlaw.com/ Specifically, http://www.reitlerlaw.com/bio/briancaplan/ System "The Antibalas Thugs" Dialing's lawyers: http://fmstern.com/ Specifically: http://fmstern.com/attorneys?id=22 I kinda liked it better when the mob ran jazz? Not really, but it was easier to pick sides.
  25. I think only one plays with Antibalas http://www.jambands.com/news/2015/05/27/ornette-coleman-suing-jordan-mclean-of-antibalas-and-amir-ziv So what now, is "Antibalas" going to become a new variant of "thug", like you know, HAHA, I never liked Antibalas, so I KNOW they're guilty? Antibalas, The Band That The Cats Who Fucked Ornette Are In. How Can ANYBODY Listen To Them Now? If so, I'd imagine the rest of the band and it's management are going to have something to say about that. I am definitely, almost 100% certain sure that if they don't owe Ornette any money now, they will, soon enough. Ornette and, the longer it goes, a lot of other people. But I want to hear their story, I don't think it'll end up being as easy as Antibalas Guys Suck(s), Set Out To Screw Ornette, Get By With It For A Little Bit, And Then Get Busted. It might be actually be that simple, but that seems really counter-intuitive on a few levels (the most immediate being, as stated earlier, do you REALLY want to be a young player trying to make a career outside of the mainstream and get tagged as an Ornette Fucker?), although, not knowing any of them personally, maybe it is as simple as that.
