  1. All Miles Davis/Pop Culture connections blur together in my head after a while, so perhaps I have gotten confused...but didn't Mitch Mitchell retire from music to go pitch for the Phillies at some point? That's why they called him "Wild Thing", because he was the guy who taught that song to Hendrix, right? I'm better at sports trivia than I am at pop culture.
  2. She's Ravi Shankar's daughter, you know.
  3. How's that bag holdin' ya?
  4. Ok, not to belabor the point, but these now-identified "moments"...is there a context of irony or code or some other reference that I should have in mind while hearing them, or this this just the way those cats rolled with it? Circus music, perhaps? Just wanting to make sure that I don't get into one of those zones where the impression is so strong yet so inaccurate that when it comes time to choose, the strength wins out because the accuracy has not been properly fed...if that makes any sense...and I do appreciate the responses to this point, all of them.
  5. Dude, the Potential Blackboard Jungle Quotient (i.e. - the PBJQ) of that image defies any and all known human measurement.

    RIP John Banks

    Yeah, the Mockingbird Kroger, right?
  7. Adrian Beltre will have to eat a live baby as it is being born and then wash it down with a Bud Light, all on live Fox News TV, before he will stop being my baseball hero.
  8. Bingo, yes, exactly., thank you. So, doctor, how do I get re-programmed?
  9. Before I get too far into this guy (and the non-symphonic works posted here are working for me much more than did the record I opened the thread with), this whole thing about "Cold War-era figure skating music"...does anybody else hear how I'm hearing that, or am I just having an total associative hallucination? And if I'm not having that, can somebody redirect my potential associations to something less....that? Serious question/call for help/etc. Also, what's the deal with the sports pieces? That notion is one I find intriguing.
  10. I generally prefer a little more tie, but that good of a look at that embouchure on that mouthpiece (looks like an old metal Selmer?) is the kind of thing that is as studyable as the music itself.

    RIP John Banks

John Banks passed away early this morning. Very few, if any, of you here will know the name, the man, or the music, but he was one of those guys that once you gig with him, you want to always gig with him. A true eccentric in every regard (he's still the only Old School Brother I know who had a Beatle Wig, from 1964, no less, and who wore it well, especially on Halloween gigs), he a was also a natural talent, and could (and often enough, did), hold down a rhythm section role all by himself, just with his own two hands. Give him a good drummer, and hell, you had a decent gig right there. Give a him a GOOD drummer, and you had a FUN gig. John was one of those guys who didn't know the"correct" changes to every song, but he pretty much knew every song, and the changes he played always worked, and he played with such a deep groove that singers and instrumentalists alike, people who did know the "correct" changes would call him for gigs just to get that feel. Some of the deepest grooving music I've evr played was with a tiro with me, John, and Chick Ramirez, a old-school cat who was playing R&B before it turned into Rock & Roll, just Chick shuffling all night on the drums and singing, John playing some off-brand keyboards walking an acoustic bass with his left hand and comping B-3 sounds in his right hand, and me just riding that groove all nigt playing solos and fills, and watching the dancers. There were nights when everybody was fully engaged (including the dancers) and it became a spiritual experience, watching and feeling it as it happened. For real. Anyway...I first played with John in 1983, and last played with him this past summer. His health had been bad, and was really bad that last gig and...news of his death today was not a surprise. Then again, John was one of those guys who never really took care of himself (his eccentricities extended to things like what time the gig started, or even what day the gig was, or how he was going to get to or home from the gig...that last time, I gave him a ride home, and when we passed a Jack In The Box, he got hungry, and when we pulled up to the window, he was like, hey, can you get this? And I was all, you mean you're extending me the courtesy of an option? ). But he had been living like that for so long, it became easy to assume that it was never going to become a factor. John is survived by at least two children (maybe more, seems like he mentioned at least one more? but I've met two of them, fine peoples both), lord knows how many ex-wives, and literally hundreds, if not thousands, of musicians who will never forget the character or the groove, as they in fact might well have been one and the same, and it is impossible to forget anything that strong. You'll be missed, Dean. Love, Jerry
  12. Yes, I had forgotten that, thanks for bringing it up!

  14. I've done all that, and more. Going to avert my gaze until deeply compelled to do otherwise. Just saw the score go from 3-1 Rangers to 4-3 Tribe during the typing of this...gonna be a longer year than it already was going to be...oh well, 162 gonna 162, right?

  18. http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/ct-anne-meara-dies-20150524-story.html#page=1 Stiller and Meara still hold up well for me, and I don't recall seeing either of them, but especially Anne, do any talk-show/etc appearances where they seemed less than sharp, sincere (enough) and twinkle-eyed in that good way that says "nothing gets past me, remember that, ok?". RIP and thanks for the laughs, all of them, and all kinds of them.
  19. So much music to get to...but I am interested. How "traditional" are the "traditional works" that we're talking about here, and in what tradition are they?
  20. Pretty sure(-ish) that if you have an actual "hole" in the outer coating, one where you can see light coming through it, then you're SOL. Otherwise, the data is still there, and then it gets all touchy-feely between software and hardware, and eeeewwwww, yuck. I don't want Dr, Phil all up inside my technology.

  23. as Mr. Nessa and me were championing for Vaclav Neumann, so on another of these "good days" you could go for this excellent Janacek Disc (japanese Reissue from a Supraphon 1982 recording for about USD 10 ....) We'll be eating dinner in this evening, too.
  24. On a good day, you can get both of those Gold Edition discs at Amazon for a combined price that is less than a good lunch for two. We're eating at home today, so this is one of those good days.
