  2. And that, dear friends, is the true crux of this matter. Somebody should prepare to get happy and carpe diem all over this thing!
  3. I must admit that I did not fully appreciate the Everly's artistry until I began to play in cover bands. Just hearing in the flesh how their lines hooked up, regardless of the competency of the attempters was an ongoing revelation. Sometimes, in fact, the people who tried and got it wrong were an even bigger revelation than those who got it right, especially those who were getting ti wrong but thought they were getting it right. It was like, yeah, that's easier, and in theory not wrong, but definitely not right. Anyway, RIP, and sincere thanks.

  5. I'm looking at my LPs right now...Volume 1, I kept the original "bag" it came in, and it's got one of those DMM stickers on it talking about "Digitally Remastered"...but the original engineers (fwiw) were David Baker assisted by Jim Anderson, and no mention anywhere of digital recording, nor on Vol. 2. I'd think that they'd have been bragging about that then if it was. Back then, people were PROUD of how they made their shit sound so horrible! Looking at that bag, I see that I paid $6.99 for this sucker, brand new, in April of 1986, at Sound Warehouse. That price, that chain, and Joe are all long gone now. But me and my LP are still here. Hard to say, objectively, who's getting the better end of that deal...
  6. That sounds like a good deal, then. I was worried that they tried to make the Village Vanguard sound like the Village Gate, or some such. "Modern tastes" and all that. Glad to hear that's not what happened.
  7. I never had any real complaints with the original recordings, they sounded very much like the room to me. Mileages vary, obviously.
  8. I always thought that "muffled" and "recorded at the Vanguard" kind of went hand-in-hand to a certain degree...it's not at all a "live" room.

  11. I don't know anybody who likes Monster. I can enjoy Magic Windows, though even if as a low investment/low expected return/casual sex basis. Not *that* bad is exactly right. But Monster, hell, I'm one of those "listen to everything, hear the recipe, appreciate it for what it is & keep the whole "like it" thing as a separate & unrelated activity" kind of guys, and no, I don't need no Monster. Not now, not never. Ever.
  12. Lead players are a separate breed, truly great lead players a rare breed within that breed...Al Porcino was a truly great lead player. And Snooky was pretty much the most unique of all, for that exact reason. Vanishing arts, all these things are...I'm glad I've gotten to experience as much of it in real time as I have...

  17. Those are people who generally bring interest to any context, so unless tickets are, like, crazymad baby-ransom high, I'd say that the worst outcome would be that you supported live music and just happened to hear fine players doing music you didn't really care for. And any better outcome than that, hey, enough of a win to not suck, right? And it might end up being very good, in which case, gamble pays off, chicken dinner, and all that.

  20. What kind of custom is this? I only know of this being done to accordions and banjos, and, in some places. trombones.
  21. Thanks for the explanation. I know of Hildalgo, but not of his "instructional" activities, nor of their wider impacts. Not surprised, either, that Jerry Gonzalez would be a factor in moving things along. He's always seemed to be that type of guy. I noticed a difference in Flores' playing on the cut involved, but it never dawned on me that that was what it was....interesting.
