  1. Can't tell the full Caravan Of Dream story without including the tales of Ed Bass, Biosphere, John Allen/Johnny Dolphin , Synergetic Civilization, the theater group that existed alongside the music club, rumblings of the whole thing being a front for some really nasty cult activity and all that. http://articles.latimes.com/1987-03-23/news/mn-8976_1_biosphere-ii http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=943&dat=19850331&id=fbtPAAAAIBAJ&sjid=gFMDAAAAIBAJ&pg=4019,2574137 http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/1991-06-16/news/9106110666_1_biosphere-ii-colonize-mars-ecology http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/1992-03-02/news/9203020068_1_biosphere-1-biosphere-2-carbon-dioxide And so forth.
  2. Yeah, let's blame The Monkees. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faK8TxS-D1w And let's blame Michael Jackson. Let's not blame audiences and musicians alike for finding their own highly specific comfort zones and then blaming the world when those comfort zones no longer reflect the world at large. Because, you know, life is just not fair. And improvisation and creativity only takes one form.

  5. Oh well, then. "Jazz musicians' improvisation", not improvisation per se.
  6. Looking forward to the hepcathalon.
  7. So it IS the birthday!
  8. But....Oakland?!?!? Sustainable?
  9. Jeff Catleman was Ellington's regular bassist at that time.
  10. The good-heartedness indicated by offering to trim the shrubs will last long after the lesson to PAY THE HELL ATTENTION when doing so has been learned! Not all kids grow up to be kind-hearted with their parents, ya' know?
  11. WTF up in Oakland, and if so, for how long?
  12. Manti)?) are trippy, indeed. On an unrealted yet still buggy note, my daughter called me out to the porch today because a small wasp was flying aroung inside the screened area and she was worried about it (she's 21, this is all she has to be worried about, apparently). Well, I went to get some wasp spray, but the thing was so small I figured I'd just wait until it landed, grab it with a kleenex, and if it lived, throw it back out into the open air. Well...in the course of diverting it around, the thing flew into a spider web. UH-oh! Hey, Krissie, watch THIS. She did, and she was at once fascinated and creeped out. The spider came on down and did what it do.. Them bugs ain't got no etiquette, none of 'em.
  13. And yet weirdly consistently under-recorded (in terms of volume) by Kenton, or whoever at Capitol made that decision. But good time, him & Stan Levey swung like hell together behind the soloists in that band.

  15. The Nina Simone thing had some very good stuff on it. I like those good ones more than I do the originals.
  16. Lee has a no-trade list, don't know if the Dodgers are on it or not. But it comes into play even on waivers moves. Waivers are tricky...sometimes a team will make a claim with no intention of getting the player, they just want to block somebody else from getting him. So maybe this is all atrategic bullshit, b/c if the Phillies either don't give him to the Dodgers outright (higly unlikely) or work out a deal on their terms (almost as unlikely), then back to the Phillies he goes, and there he stays for the rest of the year. Nobody else in the NL (i.e. - anybody with a better record than the Dodgers, specifically the Giants) - and nobody in the AL - has any further right to make a claim, and any further dealings for Lee by anybody have to wait until the off season. Wack-a-doodle-do!

  18. Dodgers claim Cliff Lee on waivers, now will they make a deal for him or does Philly pull him back? http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/08/cliff-lee-claimed-on-waivers.html
