  1. This Kenny Garret record "covered all bases" as well as they could be covered...and got no hype whatsoever... I still hope for some version of Blue Note to sign Kenny Garrett and let him make a "Kenny Garrett Record" instead of a "New York Jazz" record or a "Marketplace Friendly" record.

  3. The two sessions with Ricky Ford & Sonny Fortune are intense. Or, to be drama with it, INTENSE!!! Either way, but with confidence.
  4. 5 excellent innings from The Inner Colby Lewis today, the hip looked fine, and he was mostly hitting his spots, which is the key to his success. The 6th saw him give up two, but the Rangers came back for the lead in the bottom half and held it thanks to Ogando (who looked phanpukkingtastic....OGANDO!!!!!), Adams (who caused a bit of anxiety but got it done, and new closer Joe Nathan, who looked like...a damn good closer! No way this team gets to the series three years in a row, and who knows what injuries lie in store, but the team who showed up today looked like the rangers of the last two years, which means fun baseball. Don't know if I have it in me to invest the emotion in this season as I did the last, especially knowing how nearly-impossible to get back to the Series will be, but...today's game gave me no reason to back off or bump it down. BOOM goes the dynamite, and UP goes the blood pressure. I can feel it happening already! And jeez, I wish I could run again....give me one more chance to come up with a diving stab at a well hit line drive and I can die a happy man right then and there. And probably would!

I've had to be more than an hour late back to work because I was having lunch with some Mac-cultists who had to stop by the apple Store to just touch a new model iPad. Another group kept coming up to me to show me there new iPhones, how neat they were. Me, I'm not a "phone guy" at all. If it makes and receives calls, that's good enough for me. I don't even text unless absolutely necessary. But these folks were just babbling on and on about Jobs this and Apple that, and....BARF, ya' know? The day Jobs died, some guy comes up to me all weepy, talking about "think about how many ways that man changed YOUR life". I was, like, yeah, I have an iPod now. What else? He got offended, and I had a good laugh. Go cry somewhere else, asshole, I have work to do. On a PC. That kind of Apple fetishism is far from uncommon, at least as I experience it. There's a lot of people out there, myself included, who do what they do just fine on a PC, and there's plenty people who get along just fine on a Mac. If/when I need to switch, I will, In the meantime, some of the Jehovah's Witnesses who come to my door are easier to deal with than some of the Macientologists I run into. It's them I wish viruses, open sores, and loss of firstborn. You'd be an even better better person than me if you ran LINUX.

  8. I love my iPod, except when it skips and/or freezes, which it does fairly often. I'm sure I'd love a Mac if I had one, but I don't, and don't need to. I can do what I want and need to do with my PC, and if/when something goes wrong, I can either fix it myself or get it fixed fast and (usually) cheap. In other words, it works. Good enough for me. It's a computer, not a penis.

  11. My experience with iWorlders is in no way limited to the world of the Organissimo community. There is a real world out there, ya' know? and it's full of arrogant Macheads who are convinced that The Book of Jobs is a manual for living a trouble-free life forever more, world without end, amen. They're like the Americans who thought that we could never be attacked, or that the Japanese could never build better cars than us, or that drugs could never find thier way into our schools because we're better than that. Not just that no real attempt had yet been made to do these things,but that these things genetically could not happen. Well, they can. America can get blown up, Japan can make hella better cars than America, you can buy heroin in your school, and, yes, Macs can get hacked. Some things are harder to do than other things, but when the will gets strong enough, a way is damn near always found. Apple is getting pretty damn arrogant with their iEverything, the same way that Microsoft did a few decades ago, and their market has always had its fair share of "peacocks", First, Newest, Best, Oh, the phone doesn't work under my chin, Ha Ha, oh well, I'll get the next one a month or two from now. I'd not be surprised but that Apple has not pissed off enough cyber-goons that they've decided to play the" Ok, let's get busy on THIS" game. And guess what - they found a way in. Because there's always a way in. So for all you good ,decent iPeoples who just buy the stuff because it works the way you like for it to work (and I'm sure that that's everybody on the O-Board), hey, carry on! But for all the iSnobs, the Mac-istas, the ones in the rest of the world who would never drink a domestic been or buy an Android phone (and would rather be caught dead than to do so)...HA HA HA! And don't be surprised if there's more to come.
  12. Been alternating this and Nicholas Payton's Bitches for the last two days, and the Glasper disc is perfectly good, and perfectly not ground-breaking. This kind of thing has been going on for a while now (and internationally, too. I could name names from around the globe that have been tilling this soil in preparation for the sowing that is sure to come). What makes Glasper's record a little different is the overt "jazz sensibility" found on most of the cuts, and that's a huge difference. Most of the other people working in this vein have had to "force" the jazz, the harmonies, the solos, the "hang" of the time. Not Glasper & Co. They are jazz, it is what they do, and it is what they bring to the table here. Doesn't make them "innovative", far from it, but it does make them different (enough), and is really a continuation of the premise of jazz musicians making the "best" R&B records, a premise that is older than most members of this board. Comparison to the Payton record is instructive. Payton has better songs (or at least more unconventional ones) and his is actually the more "adventurous" music. But Glasper's is by far and away the better recorded and produced. This shit matters, the same way that proper section playing matters in an orchestra - the object is to present as maximally a total sonic experience as can be had, and in a recording-specific musical concept, the casual/haphazard/inexperienced approach does not serve that object. People talk about how Miles didn't really "understand" how to make "those kind of records" that he made with Marcus Miller, but what Miles did understand was that he might not understand, but that somebody needed to understand, or else the results would not be worthy of his name. So he let himself be led by those who knew how to get there, and the destination was reached. Mission accomplished. All this to just say that Robert Glasper seems to know how to get there on his own, and that Nicholas Payton needs to find his Marcus Miller. But both have made good records that move the game ahead to varying degrees, so good for them, and let's see what else we can do with it now. And oh yeah, I heard that opening "Hello World" on the Glasper album and started to get pissed. Glasper was hard ripping off the inimitable Shafiq Husayn, I mean, big-time. So I looked at the notes, and...oooops, it actually WAS Shafiq Husayn! My bad! Excellent choice, that was, and not at all bad company to be keeping, if company is in fact being kept.

Some people say that the reason that Macs have been relatively virus-free over the years is simply that the hacking community was leaving them alone, preferring to go after The Microsoft Evil Empire. Now that Apple is trying to create an iWorld, maybe that's changed. Maybe now we can see what the cyber thugs can do if they really try. I think it's pretty naive to equate never being attacked with being impossible to be attacked. When it comes to this stuff, where there's a will, there's always a way. No operating system is invulnerable. Cyber security, especially at the consumer level, will always be a reactive game. Maccies, start reacting!

  18. A jazz musician make a business blunder? Never! I wonder if John Snyder is involved in this package, maybe as a partner with Hall...he's never been one to shy away from putting a premium price on premium packaging...
  19. The only way to answer that is to ask Mssrs. Hall & Lowe what they put into it and what they expected to get back from it But - Allen's project was all original material, right? He might not be paying himself composing & publishing royalties in an attempt to keep the cost down. Mr. Hall would not have that option (well, he would, but...you know). Plus, I don't know, maybe Jim Hall's going all "deluxe" on the packaging. That can cost a bundle right there...

  21. Still not the same business model. Apples & oranges. Mosaic has a corporate partner, a multiple item catalog that enables them to get better pricing on quantity items like printing, boxes, etc. Plus, if one item moves slower than expected, another one might move faster. It's not like Mosaic has just one product to offer and they got to make all their money back on that one item. Artist Share just provides the artists with a forum and tools like websites, electronic press kits, etc. No money, though. None. As I understand it, all actual production expenses are borne by the artists themselves, which is where they have to set a price point that think will allow them to recoup expenses. So of course Mosaic (established company) could offer a lower price point than Jim Hall (individual). This record business...it costs more than you think (and I hear Chuck already laughing and bellowing YOU HAVE NO IDEA ), and making your money back on a one-off project is anything but easy.
