Quincy Jones: whats so great about this?
JSngry replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists
My comments reflect the reality of the music business as it has existed for as long as I've known it. Whether or not I agree with that reality is pretty much reflected in the exalted status which I have neither seeked nor obtained within said industry, although I am definitely willing to forge a Benny Goodman autograph for the right price. I bet there's still a market! But seriously, if you think that as Quincy Jones' name and fame grew, that the stars who appeared on his albums did not view it as an opportunity to get their name out there a little more, even if it was already out there, then...are you serious? You think these people told their people, "Hey, I'm on the new Quincy Jones album. Whatever you do, DO NOT BREATHE A WORD OF IT TO ANYBODY or else I'll can your ass like Star-Kist"? Seriously? Yes, the music industry is corrupt, based on greed and vanity, and selling anything to anybody who will buy it. It's about industry first and music second (at best). Also in today's headlines, George Washington was elected President Of The United States. -
No of course not...neither do I...

Bobby Bland on Soul Train, apparently: http://www.imdb.com/...242/plotsummary B.B. at least twice (per Google results from IMDB) Bobby & B.B. both got played a fair amount on R&B radio back in the early/mid 70s, all things considered (at least they did here, if mostly on the AM side of things). That's what those crappy ABC records that everybody bitches about were all about.

Yet I am sure that many checks were cashed by the insulted ones (including the ones in the fineĀ® print), that they were all for the agreed amount per the agreed-upon terms, and that none of them bounced. Music at its not so best, but business as it should be (and isn't always). -

No sign of Sarah? Wordless lead vocal, right here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SAkQfERLjY Hardly her most greatest moment, and a lot of other people could have done it, but...once again, it's about branding. By the time this album came out, most everybody who knew who Sarah Vaughan really was and what she really did would not buy this album. I know I sure didn't. But - that record, and so many others, were not made for people like us. Now, how many of the people to whom this record were aimed rushed right back out and snatched up the entire Sarah Vaughan catalog is certainly up for debate but again, we're not looking at a "musical" ideal here nearly as much as were are a corporate one. Keep the name "Sarah Vaughan" in younger audiences minds, if not necessarily their ears, and you develop a "brand name" that can be used long after she's gone. Gotta say, this one thing didn't do it all by itself, but it didn't hurt any, either. You say "Sarah Vaughan" to any number off people who really don't have a clue, and they've at least heard the name. Is that really worth anything? I don't think so, but the world that does is not my world, so...nobody asks me these things. Either way, Sarah probably got a real nice piece of change for doing the gig and her people were probably able to pimp "she's featured on the new Quincy Jones album!!!" bit as leverage when needed. Business! -
Oh, so they were looking at an iPod that could play WAV (or even FLAC) files (of which neither format takes close to 30 minutes to download with an even semi-decent connection)? Radical! Visionary! Wold-Changing! Not. More cogent is this, from Neal Young: Yeah, whatever happened to radio? Seems like all anybody listens to nowadays is their iPod.

See, the "branding" worked. If it hadn't, we'd not have had The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air. Would you want to live in a world without Will Smith? -

Yeah, but if you've been there to close up the joint, there's a helluva difference between 1 PM the next day & 7 PM the next day...

It appears that arrangements were credited on this album, so this is a good place to point out that anytime you see a credit to "The ABC XYZ Orchestra", be it in a lead or a supporting role, you should never assume that ABC XYZ did anything more than get a piece of money for lending their name. A "leader" doesn't have to conduct the band, rehearse it, write for it, contract the players, nothing. Of course, most do, and most at least supervise at least some of those tasks, but...assume nothing. Again - it's a corporate thing. "Branding" if you will. Music's just a facilitator, nothing more. Not at that level and not in that mindset. -

I'd like to know how the increased window of opportunity to sober up before game time that night games provide would have affected Ruth. I'm not a Babe Ruth fetishist. Far from it. But I also don't want to underplay or dismiss his skills either, especially relative to his time. Both extremes seem more emotional than rational to me.

The sociological impact of Soul Train cannot be underestimated. Anybody could hear R&B music, just find the radio station that played it. But to see the dances that were being done, you had to go into the clubs, and at that time in America, not everybody could (or would) do that, for any number of reasons. But with Soul Train, there it was. For everybody, anywhere. It's not too big a leap to say that Soul Train changed the world. RIP Don Cornelius, here's wishing you love, peace, and SOOOOOOUUUUULLLLLL!!!!!!

I disagree. Sports were not even close to as widely played then as they are today. The vast reach and recruitment of ballplayers today is far and away more active now. Uh...that's pretty much what I'm saying... There's more sheer number of high-talent players today, but there's also more people playing and more opportunities for them to play. But relative to the overall # of player population, I think the # of high-talent players is no better now than then. 5% of 100 = 5, 5% of 10,000 = 500, and sure, 500 is 100 times more than 5, but otoh, 5% is still 5%. That's all I'm saying.

Yeah, there's a Japanese LP reissue on eBay (with that some 70s Epic logo, wtf is THAT all about?) and it's not cheap either, especially for how short the thing is. I might be good with my $1.00 well-worn copy for the foreseeable future...
