  1. Can we get a solid confirmation of this? Yes, this does not seem possible. The smaller booklet is 68 pages and contains the following; 1. Song Index 2. Ladies Day by Gary Giddens 3. Literary Lady by Farah Jasmine Griffin 4. Discography 5. Production Credits Did the first big one have a track by track analysis as well? Yes, by Michael Brooks, if I remember correctly. So, basicaly, I can get the same package minus a blow-by-blow for about $200.00 less? Hmmmm....
  2. Yeah, if it came to that, I'd start looking fro Rusty Staub...
  3. The Atlantic's are a mixed bag. "Backlash" and "High Blues Pressure" are very good, the others are forgettable. Although "Backlash" starts off with two funky boogaloos, the band (with James Spaulding) is totally kicking ass, and the third tune is the sublime "Little Sunflower". "High Blues Pressure" features a larger ensemble, and has many fine moments. No love for at least Side Two of The Black Angel? I think the version of "Coral Keys" on there is a classic...
  4. THE HOLLIES - Look Through Any Window http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CfH-FAGc88 Pop at its best, which is doing what Pop does best as well as it can be done at any given time.
  5. Consider this run from late '65 on thru early '69: "Look Through Any Window" "If I Needed Someone" "I Can't Let Go" "Bus Stop" "Stop! Stop! Stop!" "On a Carousel" "Pay You Back With Interest" "Carrie Anne" "King Midas In Reverse" "Dear Eloise" "Jennifer Eccles" "Do The Best You Can" "Listen To Me" "Sorry Suzanne" The ones in bold are the pinnacle afaic, but c'mon, these are all well-crafted, well-preformed radio-ready nuggets with a distinct musical and lyrical POV. That's doing something! And the vocals remind me of Everly Brothers brought back across the ocean and reintroduced back to their origins, indirectly. Besides the amazing vocals, check out the tight but energetic playing on "On a Carousel". Pretty damn in there, eh? I think The Hollies should be respected for their 1960s work. Like I sad, the 70s/beyond stuff is ok for them that want it, but me, give me this.
  6. I thought it was mentioned in the email that the 2nd lp is included. I finally found the first this spring, but it will be nice to have everything in one box. Memory from "back in the day" is that more was recorded but another session was needed to complete the project. Just reporting my (possibly faulty) memory. At this point in time, I'll take it.
  7. Side Two of The Black Angel on Atlantic is sublime.
  8. That's (probably) gonna be it. But that's good enough for me.
  9. Just been checking out a collection of 60s singles by The Hollies, and...damn. From about '65-68, that was one helluva run, eh? And I know, they did some noted work in the '70s as well, but if it's ok, I'll pass on that.
  10. Can we get a solid confirmation of this?
  11. The '69 date is a pure, hardcore blowing date. Very good indeed.
  12. Straight Life. If you dig the "immediacy" of Lee, this is maybe as close to it as Freddie ever came.
  13. Yeah, but at least it's been dressed...
  14. There's a big "superficial" difference between Air & the Sextet...sometimes...Air could get "open-ended" in a way the Sextet seldom did. But Air often swung like mofos too...hey, Steve McCall, I mean, hey. Them that worry about Henry being "too" avant-garde should at least hear some of the Sextet before signing off on that position. You might still, but you might not. Depends on where your "line" is...
  15. Mmmm....TEMPTING!
  16. What I really want to know is how did Monk sex. Was he straight-ahead or did he play it like he played it? If that's not in the book (as if!), I say save your money, buy the records, and learn the music.
  17. I'm sure it is a fine release, Wadada is a true treasure, but please let me say that those are among the ugliest, perhaps even dumbest album covers I've ever seen. This is one time when I'd prefer to pay more for a download.
  18. Anybody want my Mister Piss collection?
  19. On the Trane, how unheard is "unheard" in terms of what's been around "collector's circles"?

  21. Joe Henderson & Don Cherry...false alarms abound!
  22. He was 200 when he died. Death has been relaxing to him.
