  2. Well, when the whole post is quoted and disagreed with as a bulk entity, you can't be too sure... And since I disagreed with Mr. Brown, I thought I should clarify which point it was with which I disagreed. Hell, I've never voted for Republican, and would rather die naked in church than to do so, but I have many friends and/or loved ones who have, and a fair number of them are jazz fans to one degree or another. But all of the jazz musicians I've known have been either a-political (as in "they all suck"), liberal-to-radical Democrats-to-Whatever Hard Left Party There Is At The Moment, or else stark raving Libertarians. But no Republicans. Now, society band leaders, that's another story!
  3. He is right about the musicians though.
  4. Norah, yes. That could be very good. But Krall...what's the point? Actually heard an add for this on one of the Sirius-XM country stations over the weekend (long story, don't ask...), heard a 10 second or so excerpt of "Fly Me To the Moon" and nearly drove off the road laughing (not in a good way)...and LTB was laughing too hard to help me...hope at least most of the album is better than that. I'll need to hear a lot more before committing to considering. Hey, I love Willie, love a fair amount of his music, most of his attitude, and god knows he's more than earned the right to do what WTF he wants to do (and besides, Stardust was a none-too-shabby work back in the day), and I do dig Joe Sample, at least in principle, but... Hey.
  5. Eicher nixed the notion in '79? WTF?
  6. Nah, that Coal Train guy always edges me up... If this is REAL church, we not gettin' out until after dark...so...
  7. WILLIE NELSON IS GONNA BE ON BLUE NOTE!!!!! As far as not liking his music...different strokes and all that, but if you can find a decent used LP of this one, put it on Side 2, have a dance and a beer (or two)and see what you think:
  8. Me too. Forever. Once you know Lester, things are really never the same. No things. No matter where you start from, where you end up is gonna be more open, and there ain't no goin' back.
  9. An older thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...05&hl=basso As to what I would recommend, honestly, it's all pretty much of a piece (in a good way), but the things from the last 20-25 years seem to me a little more "fully formed". So I guess, go by tune selection, accompaniment, etc. There is a Philology side, Tribute To Lars Gullin 1, I think it is, that I keep coming back to more than anything else, though. But it is all good.
  10. At least!
  11. Every bassist worth a hoot I've ever worked with has not had a problem with exerting control. Whether the personality fits the function or vice-versa I cannot say. The wild card is how mature they are i where when when how, etc. they exert it. but I'll tell you this - a bassist who is hesitant or in any other way reluctant to ever "take charge" is the first ingredient towards an unhappy musicalexperience.
  12. Not the most idiotic thing I've ever read on this forum, not by a long shot...
  13. Don gave us a very rewarding recount of the Bird/Diz/Bud Massey Hall concert at which he was present, so in my mind, he's earnded the respect a "veteran" is entitled to, which doesn't mean not disagreeong, but does mean doing so in a "polite" manner. In fact, I will do so - Don, love ya' man, but your experiences and mine are different in this regard. I know more than a few "conservative" jazz fans, and although, yes, some of their utterances make me wonder how they can love the same music as I do, I look around at the world, see all sorts of "opposites attracting" and come to the conclusion that love is indeed strange, and that matter of the jheart (of which a love of music is indeed one) do not alwyas follow a linear, "rational" path. Besides, better to have one thing in common with somebody than nothing at all, right?
  14. Just "discovered" him a few years ago, and became quite a fan. A fine, swinging player with a marvelous tone and phrasing, not unlike Ike Quebec in some ways. RIP. Must've been some kind of life!
  15. If that, then this.... You'd think, but for me...no. The earlier album bogs down under it's own weight as it goes along, whereas the later one is to the point and floats confidently all the way. If the Here's To Life is a storm that eventually causes flooding, You're My Thrill is a steady shower that just saturates the ground and then stops to let the sun come out. Mind you, I'm not getting rid of my copy of Here's To Life... I have Here's To Life (and like it a lot), but not You're My Thrill. IIRC, on Here's To Life, Johnny Mandel was orchestrating the arrangements that Shirley had done; her reharmonizations, etc. Is it the same deal on You're My Thrill, or was there a different collaborative thing that maybe accounts for the different assessment? Appears to be the same deal in both cases - trio w/vocals recorded 1st, then orchestrations based on and around that.
  16. Very. Not "exciting", mind you, but very good.
  17. It also includes that nifty little three-tune Period date w/Jimmy Cleveland & Gil Coggins that was recorded the day after the BN Vanguard date. Hardly "essential", but one that continues to satisfy, at least for me.
  18. Not sure...need to go back and reread the linear notes...
  19. Excellent! Now can you do Pig Latin, for the kids???
  20. I can go with that, easily, but maybe not for the whole smooth/trance/thing that seems to be the motive behind this thread. But Tatanka, if you're listening, yeah, don't stop on Shirley unless you've heard these two. The former, yes, not so much the latter. Yeah... I don't know what to say about that. Ascension should do the exact opposite, I'd think. Eh, maybe not. This shit is so subjective...

  22. Coulf you convert that into haiku form?
  23. a.o. The former, yes, not so much the latter.
