Speaking of Larry Coryell... I finally got to hear Chico O'Farril's Impulse side Nine Flags, recorded in November of 1966, and there's this one guitar solo on a blues that really jumped out, a totally different voice than any other on the record. It was a guitarist who played with a big fat and wide tone like T-Bone Walker, and who also would be going along playing bebop licks and then suddenly go into some T-Bone/Chuck Berry business and then go right back. I had no idea who it might be until I check the personnel, it was Larry Coryell. Here, check out this line up: Coryell's "difference" is extremely obvious and just a little startling even today. I can only imagine how it might have sounded back then. You got these highly-seasoned but somewhat buttoned-down vets, and then there's this one guitarist who sounds like either the best rock guitarist or else the jazz guitarist from Dogma, Freeland. Not a bad album overall, highly buttoned-down but oh well about that, it is what it is, but that one Coryell solo really stood out to me.

I mean, ok, things start off normal garage-band-y enough, but then that banjo comes in with a cross-pocket that just puts it someplace else altogether. I heard a clip of the studio version of this son on AMG and it did not get into the place that this one does, not at all.

So, you are more militaristic than I. Depends on the situation. But I do think that Max the "marcher" of the 40s-70s was totally appropriate, necessary even. After that it often got to be "showtime", but it was well-earned. My favorite "marcher" is Ed Blackwell. Can't think of a better "polar opposite". Different type of marching!

I'm sure there will be at some point. I'm not hustling for it (nor did I for this one), but things happen on their own it seems, just not rapidly, which right now is ok by me. OTOH - DID YOU SEE THE NEWS ABOUT THE FREE RED HOLLOWAY GIG? CARPE DIEM!!!

Max was a marcher. Philly & Blakey were (each in their own ways), dancers. You need both in this life.

There's a theater review in Time ca. 1967-68 that has an "uncensored" photo of a topless Adrienne Barbeau. Time used to publish the occasional T & A in their theater reviews. Very occasionally. As for Bea Arthur, I don't recall ever seeing her topless, in Time or elsewhere.

Hey, don't sweat it. This was such a "rehab" gig for me in terms of just not having played anything other than (at most) a few lounge/wedding gigs per month for the last 4-5 years that I didn't want to actively encourage anybody I knew to make the trip. But it was fun, and I was really happy to see the whole couples thing going on. With Quartet Out back in the day, couples were often the last to come in and the first to leave , so I dunno, maybe there's something to be said for playing relatively concise versions of very familiar tunes in a variety of rhythms instead of just "slaying the dragon" for 10-15 minutes a tune. Ya think? Of course, if/when I get my chops back up to speed, I'll probably revert and soon be saying fuck all that shit, ya' know.... But anyway...received via e-mail just this morning: Go 'head on Fort Worth!

Oh, I guess it's confirmed then. I was beginning to wonder... SWEET!!!! Thanks for the heads-up, guys! FWIW, I'm going to be in Ft. Worth Tuesday night on another appointment, but that may not end until around 9:00, if not later. I'm still gonna stop by the SCL when I'm done, hopefully be able to catch some of the set. Stupid me went to the SCJ last Tuesday (the 21st), thinking the gig was that night. And now I can't go tomorrow night, the actual night of the gig! ARRRRGGHHHH!!!! We missed you, Al. It was a fun gig. I've not been playing much the last 4-5 years, and that's hard to get around, but Lyles & Jaelun gave such good support that it was impossible not to dig down and play anyway. Not a bad house for a Tuesday night either, a few singles at the bar, and some couples coming in and staying for more than one set, always a good thing in these parts, especially on a weeknight, and especially when there was a Mavs game on. All told, it was a fun night. Fort Worth is a better music city than Dallas, that's for sure. The rest of it, hey, I don't know about that, but....
