Oh hell yeah (as I've been not particularly insistently saying for a lot of years...)! And Johnny Desmond in that band was pretty much the equal of Sinatra of the same time. Perhaps at times even better, at least in terms of maturity of inhabiting the material, or more to the point, letting it inhabit him. It didn't last for him, but damn, while it did it was something.
  2. People do terrible things in life. It's kinda...what we do, collectively. As is doing grand things. There ain't no separate line for each.
  3. That's what I'm talking about. Lacy playing parts, hey, great sound. Same w/Thad. Same for the solos, but the '63 ensembles cut the '59 mercilessly, I think. Then again, didn't that band or one much like it gig a tad before the big concert? No matter, file under "Lively And Frisky", that '63 date. As for Nelson, I'm definitely a fan overall, but that he such what to me sounds like deadline-crunch rudimentary-ish by-the-book charts for a Monk date is one of the lowest points of his career, imo. That and the album with Oily Rags, which god forbid I ever hear again. Once was ten times too many.
  4. Since I prefer to use the term "genius" in terms of the work & not the person far more often than not, I would certainly hope so, because I'm right there with ya' on that..
  5. Oh, I guess it's confirmed then. I was beginning to wonder...

  13. Has it become traditional now for there to be two tests "open" at the same time? I mean, it's ok with me, obliviously, but I was just wondering.
  14. Well, that and his big band charts for Monk.
  15. Yeah especially now that beans don't burn on the grill. Later for that. Fish, however, do continue to fry in the kitchen, and will do so forever, at least as long as I have anything to say about it.

  17. You have my sincerest & deepest sympathies. Losing a parent is difficult enough when one knows its coming. To have it some seemingly out of nowhere as it did to your mom is a shock and trauma of a scale which I cannot pretend to even imagine. From your account, your mother and you had a great relationship with no heavy duty "unfinished business". For that, you can, and hopefully will, be grateful, eventually, once you have time to sort all this out (and I'm sure Rob can tell you that it probably will take a while to do that). Also, it sounds as if your mom was one heckuva woman, a person of outstanding character and resiliency. For that, you can forever be grateful. Life does indeed go on, but not without deeply painful surprises. Stay strong and draw inspiration on your mother's survival instincts. She no doubt passed them on to you. Again, my deepest condolences to you and yours. By all means, continue to post here as the need and/or desire arises.
  18. Especially the part where we shot Bob Koester off in a rocket aimed at Lake Michigan. I wonder how all that finally turned out?
  19. Annie's brother is Reuben Gosfield, aka Lucky Oceans, the long-time pedal steel player w/Asleep at The Wheel. Annie's long-time partner Roger Kleier was a buddy of mine back at NT. When he and Annie met, it was obvious that he had found his soulmate. She talked about Reuben a fair bit, but hardly ever about her uncle. No matter, she was a delightful spirit, full of the spirit of the times and obviously a talent with whom to be reckoned.

    You & I

Missed the one w/Levine, sounds good, though. Levine is also a player worth knowing.
