    Louis Jordan

I just got to hear one side of a Tangerine 45, a thing called "Hardhead", and it is mighty fine. One of those stop/start b;lues things like Ray's "Greenbacks", with old-school macho, you're-my-woman-don't-give-me-any-mess lyrics deliviered with the unmistakable Jordan flair. With the assistance of a fellow board member, I was able to get this personnel: If that sounds like it would make for a badass backing bad, well, yeah. It does. And it is.

  3. I had a 1976 Duster with a Slant-6 that I treated with maximum disrespect (only, like, 3 oil changes in over 80,000 miles), and the son-of-a-gun ran like a champ all the way through. I only sold it because I went out on the road for a while and didn't want to be bothered with the garaging. But I would not be surprised if somewhere that car is still running, and hasn't had the oil changed since 1981.
  4. Well, back in the day, yeah. My friends were mostly jazz musicians, and we mostly played jazz records at our parties. I don't party so much nowadays. But back then, hell life was a party, if you know what I mean. And quality jazz on the Blue Note label was always welcome to come along.
  5. Miles Ahead was a flugel date, iirc.
  6. To be honest, it's the only one I have. Found it in an old mom-and-pop back in the 70s, liked it well enough to never get anything else. Don't even have it on CD yet, so I guess it sounds good enough. I know I've heard stereo versions over the years, like at friends' houses at parties and stuff, but I never really paid attention to the stereo v mono thing while doing so. It's Cornbread, ya' know? You pretty much listen to the music, if you know what I mean.
  7. I've got a mono pre-Liberty of this album, and it ain't like that.

  12. I mean, "open dailogue" pretty much guarantees a lack of passivity, no? Perhaps that would be a better way to put it - I have no use for playing or hearing any mushc where the pulse (which again, does not have to be "a beat", much less "regular" or "metered" is passive in the face of any other element. Now, for some, that might not be the same as being "driven by" the pulse, but in my life, musical and otherwise, the best things happen when one first finds/feels the pulse and then brings it to life through the other things. The "dialogue" still occurs, but it's inevitably one of seeking resolution with the pulse, not of seeking dominance over it. Maybe not everybody hears/feels/plays it that way. In fact, I'm sure that they don't. Oh well about that. They got their lives, I got mine. To thine own self, and all that. Just spare me "beauty" that just sits there. Please.
  13. That's not at all what I mean. I think you might be talking me too literally?
  14. Well, yeah, of course, but if all I get is a "pretty melody" or "interesting harmony", without the sense that it's being driven by the pulse, the I get the sense that I'm expected to be a passive observer who's supposed to be blown away (or at least "impressed") by how.....superb it all is. It's like, would you rather "look at" life or get all up in it to one degree or another?

  18. How would history have changed if Shadow Morton had gotten to the Ronettes before Spector did? Who knows? Who cares? Oh well. But could you imagine a "Shangri-la's vs Ronettes" Reverbed Snare Death Match? I can! And the oser is...PHIL SPECTOR! But then we'd never have had "I Wish I Never Saw The Sunshine".
