"Bastards" Dusty Groove reissues some Woody Shaw
JSngry replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Re-issues
Apparently, both were taken from the same concert. Is this correct? Club date, iirc. Don't get me wrong, both are fine. But for my money Master is the one I'd get if I were only getting one. -

I like Masters a lot better than Night, one's a near-classic, the other "merely" good, but both are worth getting, especially if you've yet to be fully immersed in the whole Woody Shaw bag but think you might want to be or know that you do. Just my opinion. -
New Freddie Hubbard coming out on Blue Note
JSngry replied to ghost of miles's topic in New Releases
certainly you're aware of this smokin' live disc featuring Henderson: an excellent disc, all 'round! Certainly and indeed, but for my taste, Joe's contribution to the JWL is far superior than what he does on that one. -
New Freddie Hubbard coming out on Blue Note
JSngry replied to ghost of miles's topic in New Releases
Sorry, but this isn't really correct. The release of this has been in the works for a while, over a year. Freddie and I listened to these recordings last January (2008) while we were working on our last CD together (we were doing post production stuff in LA and we played this stuff in the car to and from the studio every day, he loved it). The takes were chosen and mixed over the Summer I believe and Freddie asked for some changes to be made in the order after he received the first master. This was all done way before he had his heart attack. He was paid for the relase of this of course and in advance which is the norm for this and it had nothing to do with medical expenses as he wasn't hospitalized yet. Now the overpress thing, that would be nice and this hasn't been mentioned to me so I can't say for sure. I think I know who your source is and I personally took a lot of the information I used to get from him with a grain of salt.... Forgot Henderson was on the Thad and Mel stuff. That would make it well worth investigating and as you said time does change things...... perhaps another call is in order I'll take your word on all this, David. -
Still trying to get this one out of my head... And still...

Wow....I can't answer this question, if only because I can "get into" people and still not really "like" them. I can, and do, listen two different ways, sometimes at the same time - "as a musician" and "as a fan". And things can get to me one way that they don't the other. I mean, Brubeck, ok, not a "hero" or anything, but damn, the guy had some really interesting and provocative harmonic ideas, both as a soloist and accompanist. And so forth. Even my general target of scorn, Stan Kenton, well hey, even aside from the Graettinger stuff and the acknowledged "exceptions to the rule", I've evolved a bit of "understanding" about why ti is what/how it is. I still don't "like" it, but technically, and to some extent sociologically, there's a story there. Hell, there's usally some kind of story in even the lamest piece of shit music made anywhere on Earth, even if it's a story about how much "settling" goes on in this life. That's not necessarily a musical story, but still, there's life even in that, and I respect it accordingly. Loathe it as well, perhaps, but respect and loathing need not be mutually exclusive, lest one turn into a creature of hate instead of a creature with rather strong aversions.

New Freddie Hubbard coming out on Blue Note
JSngry replied to ghost of miles's topic in New Releases
"Industry sources" tell me that Freddie got his money for this release in advance, before he died, in order to defray medical expenses, and that there are also plans to, if possible, "overpress" so tha tFreddie's widow will get a much-needed publishing royalty upfront. In other words, this ain't no cheap exploitation release. As for the rest of the Jazz Wave Ltd. concerts, that's something I had asked Cuscun about a long time ago, specificiallyto find out if there was more of Joe Henderson playing w/Thad & MEl (the one released cut is smokin', as they say...). He said then that there were money issues on that tour, and no small amount of bad feelings towards Sonny Lester as a result, so probably no further issue of JWL material. But here we are. Time changes things sometimes, -
Golson/Farmer Jazztet goes straight to Last Chance
JSngry replied to greggery peccary's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
As did I, and for some reason I'm not too upset by that, not like I was when I had to miss the Roach set. I mean, I know it's all good-to-great, but I was not distressed by letting those who really wanted it have it. Enjoy! -

Yeah, I've long known about the Cox/Brando friendship, but this is the first time I've heard anything to make it seem really "plausible", is you know what I mean.

Woody's version was recorded, as an instrumental, for Heavy Exposure on Cadet. It was, in fact, the opening tune of the album. Donny is listed in the personnel as playing organ on the album, so there's another trivia question for further on up the road... Donny's version, a vocal, was done on 1973's Extensions Of A Man. Both versions are, in their own way, superb. The Woody cut is one of his best-realized late-60s attempts at getting a "now sound", and Donny's version is, well, Donny, 'nuff said. Either way, it's a pretty neat tune in and of itself, and could easily be brought into any number of jazz repertoires w/o too much difficulty. Thanks to all for playing. The back story to "Caledonia" was an education!

Here's a hint - the song in question was recorded/released by Woody sometimes in the 1960s, by not by its composer until sometimes in the 1970s. This might make it too easy, but hey....
