They still make it, at least in these parts. Forever immortalized by Jerry "Ar-uh-Cee-uh Cola and uh Moon Pie" Clower! But apparently, known as "Royal Crown", it had an Eastern following as well. Remember the Michael Stivic Cola Blindfold Test on that episode of All In The Family? Royal Crown was one of the contestants. Upon meditation, what I've always preferred about Pepsi over Coke was their relative "dryness". Pepsi tastes "wet", Coke "dry". When I'm quenching my thirst w/cola, I want wet. Mileages obviously vary on that one, but there's mine.

Wow, I must have a unique oral chemistry (yeah, ok, consider that one a gift...), but Pepsi has always tasted less sweet to me than Coke. Then again, since the introduction of Nutra Sweet, I much prefer diet sodas. Don't find them at all bitter, but find the regulars too sweet, too sticky.

Funny, the "conventional wisdom" back in my youth was that Pepsi = Republican, Coke = Democrat, at least as far as political sympathies went. Didn't Nixon spend part of the mid-60s working as an attorney for Pepsi? So yeah, "Pepsi Generation", right, uh-huh, whatever. That said, I prefer Pepsi to Coke, always have, and I really like their new packaging. No illusions, that's all I'm saying.

Ok, is. Again. Point being, he wasn't being any kind of a musician (other than perhaps a "mental" one, by which I mean he played in his head but nowhere else) when he got rediscovered. But before he disappeared (and now that he's reappeared), he was (is) one helluva musician, and not just "conceptually".

I've got friends who tell me that slowly but surely the "blogs" are beginning to shift to FLAC files as a point of quality. so perhaps yet again, the underground will force the mainstream to up their ante just to compete?

Well, there's two things to consider in all this, not just about Logan, but about playing, especially "free" playing, in general. One is that it is absolutely essential to develop your own voice, to tell a story of your own. On that front, Logan succeeded as well as anybody, better than a lot, actually. The other, though (and this is particularly relevant to what Roscoe was saying), is that after you do that, you'd best develop the resources to develop that story. Otherwise, you're going to be left telling the same story the same way year after year after year, and before too uch longer, who cares any more, except that ok, you doi have a voice, but what are you telling me with it that you've not already told me? And this is where Logan and a some other guys got hung up, I think. And where Roscoe most assuredly did not. "Getting yor shit together" is a pretty damn....vast undertaking, if you know what I mean (and players such as the E-Man here most certainly do). Earlier, I mentioned the "fraud" list, and how I could not quite bring myself to include Logan on it (truthfully, I can put very few people on it, because most everybody who gets considered has at least developed a personal voice, although dammit, I do think I will include Arthur Doyle, just because he...never mind, we've had that discussion somewhere at some point before), but gee whiz folks, is there any evidence that the guy did in fact put in the time to, as Roscoe said, get his shit together? Really together? None that I can hear of, and if that's because of personal problems, hey, ok, shit happens, but then again, shit happens anyway, right? So what I'm left with in Logan is somebody whose presence is more valuable to me as an "example" than as an actual musician. What he actually did is nice enough, but ultimately his concept trumps his reality, if you know what I mean. Giuseppi Logan is not Henry Grimes, if you know what I mean. I'm genuinely glad that he is alive and might yet still have a shot, but...

Well, first of all, it was immediately apparent that it wasn't "I've Got You Under My Skin", nor was it Bird/Diz/Bud/Massey Hall in either personnel or age, even though the file was so named (explicitly - and lengthily so!). WMP ID'd the tune as being "Angel Eyes" & the lead artist being Wynton, but I certainly recognized Blakey, and to a lesser degree, Watson. So it took no articular clerness and/or depth of perception on my part to realize that this was a blakey w/Wynton cut. From there, it became a matter of simple detective work. My first guess was the Bubba's session, because I have almost all of the other Blakey/Wynton material and didn't recognize this piece. Sure enough, there it was, and it turns out that this particular tune is one that has been included in the seemingly innumerable collections of the Bubba's material far less often than most of the others. In retrospect (and after a nap), I'm thinking that perhaps Mr. Cam approached the group projecting a surety that he in fact did not posses. The O-Boardian Contingent can sometimes be an intimidating bunch, and hell, we got one guy in our midst who was actually at Massey Hall that night. So perhaps Mr. Cam wanted to not come off as "inexperienced" in the face of such a group, even though the exact opposite has happened. If that's what happened, well, then, hey, I understand, no hard feelings, consider it a learning experience, and I apologize for any "smugness" I might have projected. There is no sin in not knowing, only in not finding out, dig? If, otoh, the guy was just joking or otherwise looking to prank, hey, ok, good job, you cdrtainly got my attention, but game over, and hopefully for good.

Mr Cam sent me a file purporting to be this cut, only it was an "AVS Media Demo" (as the repeated voice over constantly reminded me) of a latter-day Blakey cut - Bobby Watson's "Time Will Tell", from The Birthday Concert. Only it shows as being from a repackaging of that album under Wynton's name (Angel Eyes). So whatever's going on here with this thread and these requests, it ain't real. Or if it is....whoa.

Anytime somebody asks me about "frauds" in the 60s Free Jazz scene, I invariably want to point to Giuseppie Logan, but I usually just can't bring myself to do it. Like you said, there is a completenes there that passes all human understanding, at least mine, and apparently yours as well. But why am I getting the feeling that PastorDoctor Jones is thinking that he's rediscovered a really HUGE Jazz Celebrity, somebody that will make Entertainment Weekly or some such?

And it might yet come. Kinsmen has really gotten to me in a lot of ways, lots of implications about bi-lateral assimilations that play pout past the musical arena and such, but the bottom line is that this guy can play. He's really working on honing his own voice, and it is a voice that in some crucial ways is "first of it's kind" in jazz saxophony. Even if the worst that happens to him is that he becomes an "evolutionary figure", somebody who opened up a new direction for others to come after him, that's still notable, I think. And truthfully,I think he will become more than that. And also, I'm not so sure that what he might consider "breaking loose" and what "we" consider "breaking loose" are entirely the same thing. That might actually end up being part of his contribution, the establishment/definition of the whats/wheres/hows of "breaking loose". However, before I render any final verdict, I'm gonna need to hear him blow a few choruses of "Stella", just to see if he can really play...
