  1. As long as there is not a need for what the union provides (or should provide...), no there won't be (not unless we go back to the pre-union days of hired goons beating up and/or murdering people...). But labor does not determine that. I really want to know though - do Honda, Toyota, etc. allow any sort of "employees association" or some such? Or are they such awesomely Sensitive New Age folks that they maintain harmony intuitively?
  2. And 2nd Tenor parts so easy even a child could play them!
  3. I've heard that there are many Roman Catholic organists, so I should think so.
  4. But then you'd have to include all those pesky rhythms and odd harmonies...
  5. That is most unfortunate.
  6. Chris, how can you say that the time for unions is "over" when you know that most American companies are still being ran like TruGreen ChemLawn? Maybe the UAW needs to start thinking in terms of "dealing with" Subaru, Honda and Toyota, instead of them Subaru, Honda and Toyota with the UAW. Because clearly these are companies that are doing what a union should (even/especially now) be focused on - delivering job security in an environment of mutual profitability and overall benefit. Maybe it's more to the point to argue that there was a time and a need for the aggressive, "sales first" management strategy of TruGreen ChemLawn, but that time is over. Until then, there ain't even the possibility for a level playing field w/o organized employee representation. Viability & sustainability are never unilaterally created in a free society.

  8. Uh, yeah. It was years ago and all that... My bad. But the point about Earland holds anyway!
  9. You know, I used to debate about this with myself, whether it was my weakness for liking such a blatantly limited vocabulary, or if it was Earland's credit for being able to make it work. Finally, I just said fuck it. It is what it is, I dig it, good enough, let's groove. If/when that's not what I want to hear, I just don't listen to it. But I don't lnow that there's ever been a time when I've heard an Earland cut come on the radio that I didn't turn the volume up and hunker down for some good grooveness. Thing about Earland in his recording prime though, even moreso that most organist-led groups, this cat always had badass tenor players. Not always "great" mind you, but always badass. It was on an Earland side that I first got hipped to Bootsie Barnes. Now, Bootsie Barnes is not a "great" tenor player, but he damn sure is a badass tenor player. And actually, considering the turf, that's really the object of the game, as was pretty much everything else about Charles Earland.
  10. Children of the Night Wow. Arranged by Billy May? I don't know about that. Is it bouncy? Did he get rid of all those wrong chords that Wayne insists on writing? Like I said, it's professional!
  11. Anybody know which came first, that one or Why Try To Change Me Now? Doesn't matter really, two great songs, probably separated at birth or something...
  12. Dammit Larry, I step away while posting...
  13. Matt Dennis? All kidding (and androgyny) aside, how 'bout them Hi-Lo's, folks? How 'bout that Prezifying of the tune's opening phrase? Dennis implied it (it's his tune) & Puerling made it clear. Makes it all worthwhile.
  14. Recently found this at a Goodwill for about a buck. Liner notes list soloists (a.o. = Paul Horn & Don Fagerquist), not full band (bass playing seems quite good, btw). Anybody got the full factuals? How the chart on Wayne's tune? Eh...uh....er....like the rest of the album, it's....professional!

  16. Wow....people want all those Quadrophonic albums back... Who knew?
  17. Had a good time with this one last night: Outerzone by Francisco Mora Catlett, a 2007 release. Here we got some Marshall Allen, we got some Craig Taborn, we got some electronica, we got some Afro-funk, we got some Ra-ness, just a nice mix of ingredients to make a good record (or, at least it was good last night). And here we got a site full of generous-sized samples of most/all of Mr. Franciso Mora Catlett's albums: http://www.franciscomoracatlett.com/
  18. Hadn't heard about this one, that's good to know...how long has it been out, and is it a continuation/expansion/just what exactly of "Berimbaum"?
  19. Why don't we all catch Pops' next gig and decide for ourselves?
