It's actually early 1990s. Sonny live & Sonny on record have been two different things for quite a while now (many a discussion about this and what it all means has been had here and elsewhere). But if you want a later-period studio side that catches some of this spirit (and I stress some), please try Falling In Love With Jazz. I think you'll enjoy it. I know I do. It's actually refreshing to hear somebody who's not particularly enthralled by"vintage" Rollins respond positively to an example of his later work, which I myself think has been highly, highly undervalued by too many people (usually for reasons which are intellectually defensible, I suppose, but geez, how do you not hear the sheer joy in this man's playing here - to say nothing of the total mastery of the instrument - and not be touched by it? That's something to which I cannot even begin to relate). There's plenty there to be touched by, I think. More than plenty, in fact.

Somewhere in the chain of command will be a person with the power (and sympathy) to make all this right. There will be, trust me. Finding them, though, might be difficult. I strongly urge both phone & written communications, taking names (and relaying them) every step of the way. And do not be afraid to go up the ladder. It may well be a huge pain in the ass, but... At my job, I get correspondences w/stories similar to yours all the time. I do a little research to determine their legitmacy (not every tale of woe is legit, alas), and pass those that are along to the right people. It feels good for everybody involved to make a wrong right. But you gotta hook up with people who feel that way, and like I said, that may take some doing. But it can be done, so if you got the time & energy, go for it. Good luck.

You know, don't you, that mortgage companies don't just buy/sell/trade loan porfolios, but also servicing rights to each others' loans? In other words, Wells Fargo might be the name and address on your payment coupon, but in reality it might be another company altogether that's handling the payments, and perhaps even the customer service, totally unbeknownst to you. It's called "private branding", and it is not uncommon.

Re:the Groove Merchant/Cook County thing - doesn't it sound like the ep's been overdubbed & that the original was severely under/non-recorded live? Either that ot there was another concert going on out in the yard... -
So waht happened to the news story from a few years ago that LP s were going to be forced (yes, forced, as in you got no choice but) out of production due to some petrochemical/economic restriction/reason? Might even be archived here on the board somewhere...

It's Too Deep Too! (Richard Pryor)
JSngry replied to neveronfriday's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Other than the fact that Amazon misstates the set's title (it's And It's Deep Too, the uberpunchline to "This water sho' is cold..."), hell yeah. Richard Pryor in his prime, which means unfettered genius in action. -
This is a situation that has been bubbling up for a few years now. I work for a "major mortgage company" in the payment processing department, and the number of distressed loans (ever seen the terms of a "workout" program? If you can get your shit together by the time it expires, you're in good shape, but if not, you're worse off than you were before...)/foreclosures (sometimes people will just send us the keys to their house in an envelope. No explanation offered, none needed) we've seen has been increasing steadily (and dramatically) for at least the last two years. It's cut across regions and (apparent) income levels too. I've seen the promotional literature for some of these ARMs, and they're all predicated on taking out loans with a built-in/guaranteed "bite in the butt" at some future point and avoiding that bite by either reselling the property at an appreciated value in a few years, or else having personal income that undergoes a healthy rise over time. In other words, "the bubble is going to last forever, so dive in!" Well, guess what? Like most things "financial", the strong(est) will survive, like they always do. For the rest of us, the name of the game is to get in at the right time and then get out at the right time. Otherwise, you end up giving it all back, and often what you give back is more than you took out in the first place. Not nearly as many people are as financially "strong" as they're led to believe by those who really are strong. It's not loan sharking by any stretch of the imagination, but the net effect is somewhat similar - you take out and take out, and then, BAM, you find yourself unable to pay back and it all goes back, and then some. I'm sure that there are any number of financial "experts" who will insist that none of this is a ripple-effect from the Outsourcing/Wal-Mart-ization of America, but I remain to be convinced otherwise. Tip of the iceberg indeed...

And George Duke. It was. That Rollins/Cohen thing still gives me goosebumps. It was on NBC on Sunday nights for a year, then went syndicated for a season. Still no DVD (or even VHS) issues of the shows (Broadway Video is Lorne Michaels' thing, right?) which is a near-crime. Check out that tag he plays at the very end where he takes his held note, lips it up a half step, then plays a descending run in the new key all the way to the bottom of the horn in that key, only to resolve it to the tonic of the original key. It's the beginning of the process by a lipping up that makes it so damn bad. Sonny Rollins is TenorGod. Go TenorGod, we LOVE you!

Not quite. Just call me Herb Jeffries.

Jimmy Dorsey was a virtuoso, and that must be respected for what it is, which is nothing insignificant. Anything beyond that's a matter of taste, but anybody who won't/can't cop to that much is a fool.
