  1. That, I think, was Larry's point - that the phrase was used carelessly at best, and cluelessly at worst. Piss-poor conveyance of an idea. If he REALLY meant it exactly as written, then he's an idiot, at least in that regard. Just my opinion.
  2. Recorded very nicely as well.
  3. That also be grounds for a new, dedicated, thread to give it more attention!
  4. I don't think that material needs to be rendered neutral. Far from it. Why bother selecting specific material if it ultimately doesn't matter? I do think that past interpretations of the same material can be effectively rendered neutral, and I also think that any piece of material can provide a basis for something far removed from its original intent, but that's nowhere near the same thing as neutralising the material itself.
  5. As if an Albert King song needed some neutralizing (whatever THAT means...I assume it means the musical equivalent of cooking tomatoes with sugar to make them taste less like tomatoes) to make it "jazzworthy". That's some stupid shit.
  6. Pulling Eagles (STRONGLY!) but betting Patriots.
  7. David Lee plays/played cymbals the way they were meant to be played.
  8. I'd recommend the new one by The Turbinator. Nice stuff.
  9. That Raskin "trick" with the piano for the film score sounds not dissimilar to the one that Shorter & Zawinul used on "Milky Way".
  10. Now, if you like a major league chops display on the tune, George Coleman provides one the Enja tios side recorded @ the VV.
  11. yes
  12. Well then, call me Wash Cloth and just bring me in for guest spots.
  13. That would be a gas!
  14. Guess the parking lot is where you go when you get too old for the bridge.
  15. Haven't heard it, but I've got a video of Leon doing "Shake, Rattle, & Roll" w/Basie from ca. 1965, and he does just fine w/it. No yodelling or anything. So I know that he's got those abilities.
  16. I had a friend in kindergarten who was always, as in EVERY day at recess, making "Big Boy vs Little Girl" drawings. "Big Boy" was a bomb-dropping helicopter that had a flag depicting a penis urinating into a washtub, and "Little Girl" was a bunch of little girls in skirts running for cover. That was in kindergarten. I wonder what became of that guy? His name was Billy O'-somethinornuther...
  17. So, that would include the mastering levels as well as the recording levels, right? Recorded, mixed, and mastered at saturation point? It might be apocryphal(sp?), but I've heard stories of some stations not being able to play Spector 45s because the needle wouldn't stay in the groove, so hot was the sound.
  18. Yeah, and you can hear the pad noise from inside the horn, too, which is wierd as hell. BUT - That's when the playing on the albums started getting better, when he was free to move around.
