  1. This makes sense to me, especially now that they've tested the Water(s)...
  2. Frequently on live gigs. Less so on studio recordings. Yep. Every big band I've seen and/or played in always stretches the solos out live.
  3. I've not even opened the package yet (long story...), but now I'm curious to find out jyst how bad it is. I can't imagine it being THAT bad. But you never know...
  4. A tall cool one at Millies Oasis, and all is forgotten!
  5. It might offend some listeners, but probably not any who'd listen to you regularly anyway.
  6. Ain't one big enough to handle both collections, I'm afraid.
  7. A Badass B-3, no less! Do I smell a battle a-brewin'? SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY! BATTLE OF THE BADDASS B-3S!!!! PUMPIMG PEDALS!!!! SWIRLING LESLIES!!!! SNIVELLING SHEMPS!!!! ALL STOPS PULLED ALL OUT!!!! SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You and Jim could take THAT shit on the road! (btw - nice blurb, Congrats!)
  8. Well, sir, if I've done you some good with some music, consider it a favor returned.
  9. The British magazine Jazz Journal International did a very nice interview with her somewhere in the early 1990s. I remember it as being very articulate and insightful. Might be worth hunting down.
  10. No, but he did do a State Dpt. tour in the early 1960s of some Middle Eastern countries (it was aborted because of JFK's assassination), which is what led him & Strayhorn to write THE FAR EAST SUITE. Of course. DUH! DOH! For some reason I was thinging "USSR Only" in connection with the book, which makes no sense, what with Louis on the cover, right? My BIG bad. Hell, I'm not even 50 yet...
  11. Wow...thank YOU, sir! Just curious, are you listening to the "official" album, or the compilation of all the various takes of the material issued over the years that I made for you? In general, I prefer the things on the official album, but the Columbia-issued "Shadow of Your Smile", is really, REALLY special, I think. And speaking of bottles (and other ingestables), the take of "Shadow: that didn't get released until 2003 is one of the most beautifully disturbing examples of near-incoherency triumphing over itself that I've ever heard. That song must have really stirred up a lot of stuff in him. In the interest of having a "jazz" connection for the unconvined, it should probably should be noted that the orchestral arrangements were done by Bobby Scott. The story of Marvin's decades-long obsession with these tunes and these charts, and how he came to seek solace from perfecting his performances to them in a time of deep depression and despair, is told in the biography Divided Soul by David Ritz. A great book, fwiw. No matter, it's some deep stuff, I think. Hell, MARVIN was deep.
  12. I don't think that Duke actually toured the USSR proper until the early 1970s. Not sure about that though. The Goodman visit was of no little human interest, because Goodman's parents were of Russian descent, plus I think he (or somebody) made sure to include several players in the band who had similar heritages. As much of a mental strain as that tour apprently turned out to be, there were apparently some pretty poignant moments as well, if George Avakian's original liner essay is to be believed. The whole "return to the Mother Country" thing played itself out more than once, for band members and citizens alike.
  13. Thanks Larry, I always thought that locked hands and block chords are essentially the same except that maybe the term block chords is more general and also relates to other instruments and orchestra. Can you explain the difference? Also, there are probably as many different variations on block chords as there are many different pianists, but I'll be glad if someone could add a survey of the technique. Buckner & Shearing usually moved the entire chord voicing w/each note. Red usually kept the same voicing in the left hand while moving the line in the right. That's a pretty broad generalization, and a bit of an oversimplification, but I hope you get the general idea.
  14. BTW, are rumors of his death still greatly exaggerated?
  15. Maybe this will lead to RCA finally reissuing Goodman's Moscow album! But probably not...
  16. It always happens, Dude. Always.
  17. Gotcha'. Agreed.
  18. THAT will happen when the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Michigan become one!
  19. Still can't believe that's Jimmy Forrest!
  20. Send out for smokes?
  21. Same.
  22. Sorry, $10 was the Early Bird Special. If it keeps up like y'all say it will, I'd grab $15 before it goes up to $20. Or higher. Capitalism at work, Dear Friends.
  23. Not WTF. WWE, formerly WWF.
  24. An old standby, inevitable screamed by some slobberhead at the end of a 4-hour party gig, the first 3 of which were spent with all the guests not yet being drunk enough to have start dancing: "I'll give y'all 50 bucks of my own money to play another hour!" Hey fuckhead - I'll give you 50 bucks of MY own money for you to get the hell outta my face. $75 if you promise not to start driving until I get home.
