  1. Oh, Jelly Roll...like all superior liars, there's always enough truth mixed in with the lie to keep the ball rolling...
  2. I've seen no hard data one way or the other, but I do see it suggested that the most efficient way to get between New York and New Orleans prior to good rail service was by ship. So, things come in, things go out, nobody keeps a record. God only knows what went where when. What we do know is that Louis Armstrong/Sidney Bechet took the input (whatever it might have been) and changed the output once and for all. Once that happened, we know what we are dealing with going forth
  3. The river thing should be taken seriously, but not in isolation as per the popular narrative.
  4. You'll come back for the burn, because that's where it lives. Price you got to pay to be free, etc. But seriously, look at a map - there are many different ways for things to get out of - or into - New Orleans than just the river.
  5. Just arrived, went straight into the player and is beginning as we speak. Most immediate impression is the astounding clarity of the recording. And now the horns, wonderful! This is going to be fun!
  6. Pretty Polly Polly Bergen Paul Parrot
  7. Slud Trant - Mok plki Dobnk
  8. Bob Florence plays keyboards that sound like a SNES game. Vegas Stakes in particular.
  9. Or $1 99 with your allowance money!
  10. Malvin and the Slurp Sisters - Yesterday's Jeans
  11. Aren't we all?
  12. 'Orgasms" by Sally Kellerman!!!
  13. A lot of quirk, for sure. But it's all quirk that I like!
  14. I got my first taste of Debut courtesy of our local Firestone:
  15. I don't know if I "prefer" the overdubbed bass, but it's what I got I my head after 30-40 years, so when I finally heard the original version, it just sounded off somehow. Especially the bass duet on "All The Things You Are" not being there, that was just discombobulating. It's nice to have both versions, but I don't see how it would be a sheerly musical priority for anybody.
  16. You'd need this one: https://www.discogs.com/release/3712249-Charles-Mingus-The-Complete-Debut-Recordings
  17. I filled my Massey Hall cup with the Mingus Debut box. Before that, this lasted me for decades, at least three, maybe more. So yeah, I'm more than good here. And still as cranky as always!
  18. Yeah, $100.00 for 3 LPs of music I already have? To be admittedly but necessarily indelicate - fuck that!
  19. Sorry, but no "exoneration" will be forthcoming. When there is a dog, or a mildly inspired effort, it will be identified as such. There will be plenty of that. Fair warning, though - if I like something, I will say that too. As far as "trivial", there are items in his earlier work that are also trivial, imo, items where he's playing his own licks because nothing else seems to have come to mind. But then as now, they're only records.
  20. The Ankil Argyle Crew - Sockadelica!!!
  21. Hey, Jordi has to make back his $$$$ for his intensive R&D.
  22. Outreach to youth is always a good strategy, imo.
  23. Ginger tea, just make your own. Raw ginger root, slice, peel, boil, flavor to taste, drink. Besides settling the stomach, it promotes a good cleansing quick flush of a sweat. One of those things that feels good just as soon as it's over
