Thanks, Sal! Yeah. On the Anderson side, he suggested a Donald Ayler who could fluently negotiate changes (and don't get me wrong - I LOVE Donald Ayler, but harmonic acuity is not the first thing that pops into my mind to describe his playing, if you know what I mean...).

Some not yet mentioned: Bill Dixon, at least in some circles. The beauty of the blur... Hannibal - kind of a "one-trick pony" at times, but when that trick's working, look out! Don Ellis - never met a gimmick he didn't like (or use), but in spite of all that, a very exploratory, individual player. Ruby Braff - absolutely fearless when it comes to using silence in unexpected places and off-the-wall phraeology.

Plenty of players that others like/love that I just don't "get", but I hesitate to call them "overrated" simply because I recognize their validity and respect their professional integrety and stuff like that. Having said that, I really don't "get" Tom Harrell and Conte Candoli, for starters. But remember, I'm not calling them "overrated". The same holds true to a lesser extent for a substantial portion of Chet Baker's recorded work, but in his case, the exceptions are so nice that I really shouldn't be mentioning his name in this context. But it's too late now! And for that matter, I'd like to think that I just haven't heard the performance by Virgil Jones that allows me to see why he popped up with seemingly great regularity at Rudy's for Prestige & Muse dates for a good while.

Heard him the other night on Fred Anderson's BACK AT THE VELVER LOUNGE, and very much like what I heard from him. Would be interested in hearing what he's got going on, and if he is in fact a voice to keep an ear on.
