  1. It is becoming more "natural" feeling for me to post here for some reason. I intend to keep an eye on ALL the boards, and post as desired, but honestly, right now, I'm digging the intangible VIBE here. I wouldn't feel right posting about Charles Hodges on the other boards. I would have on BN, but hey... Remains to be seen how much of an interest in the "freer" forms there will be here, but no big whoop. The days of total boardal monogomy might be forever gone. But this place is really feeling like my #1 stop so far. And now, since my son is vomiting for the 3rd time in the last hour, I think it's time to leave cyberspace behind for a while...
  2. I asked about the Blue Arrow on the BN board, and nobody really knew. I figure that you got some manuals or on-line instructions in the house somewhere, so WHAT does this thing mean anyhow?
  3. I read that too, but I think he means in the current form. They've had forums for a few years, haven't they? Being a little older and maybe a bit LESS wiser, I feel a bit self-conscious about being viewed as a means to boost traffic to a commercial website. I don't mean "me", I mean all of us. Yeah, BN probably viewed it's BB community the same way at first, but by the time I got there, there was a real non-business vibe to it, w/Tom craking wise ocassionally and stuff like that. That might happen at AAJ, but once bitten, twice shy, as they say.
  4. Dude, I DARE it to. I'd countersue SO damn fast it would NOT be funny. The zeitgeist and me have never really gotten along anyway. Must be fate. Or maybe just my shoes....
  5. Pun intended. Ok, I've been on this Ann Peebles kick lately, and that means Hi records, Willie Mitchell, the Hodges brothers, and, specifically, the hipper-than-hip organ playing of Charles Hodges. Now, I've got no idea what kind of soloist this cat is, and don't really care either. The accompaniments he plays on all those Al Green, Ann Peebles, and other Hi sides just blows me away, even today. His seems to be a Gospel-rooted concept. You know, how the organist will accompany the preacher during the sermon with litle fills and masssive kicks, depending on what's needed. Also, a lot of the stops he uses seem to come out of the church, but that's something I really don't know anything about. However, this is R&B, not gospel, and as has been noted to the point of cliche, pretty much the only real stylistic difference is that one's about God and the other's about Sex (flip sides of the same coin if you ask me...), and Hodges' organ punctuations virtually REEK of sex. With his brothers Teenie & Leroy on guitar and bass (respectively) and either Al Jackson (simply, the greatest pure GROOVE drummer in the history of R&B, no slight to Clyde Stubblefield, Jabbo Starks, Zig, or ANYBODY else intended) or Howard Grimes (who was, in a sense, to Jackson what early Max Roach was to Kenney Clarke - similar yet different) laying down that deep groove that is nothing if not the rhythm of some really SERIOUS copulation, Hodges' organ functions as the soundtrack for what the rhythm is creating - he hums, he moans, he groans, he stutters, he whispers, he screams, he does everything but call your name and scratch the hell out of your back. Anybody else dig this cat? Or the Hi sound in general?
  6. RE BOTC: What Chuck said. Definitely. Now, if BN hadn't pissed everybody off, there would probably be a market for a THIRD version - one combining the RVG with the live stuff. It might happen yet!
  7. Yeah, that's a word that took me a while to get a handle on, but if you remember that the root is "commend" and that you're sort of "re-commending" something, it all falls into place. I'm a lousy typist and I used to do the double-c thing all the time w/o thinking. Funny how different typing is from writing by hand - I'd never spell "recommend" with 2 Cs when writing by hand. Yours trewly, Jim Sangrey - Spelling Dork
  8. Just a point to consider for what it's worth - the entire AAJ site, including the bulletin board, is a for-profit business. Look beyond the bulletin board and you'll see what I mean. No dis intended, it seems cool enough for what it is, but a business it is nevertheless. The owners no doubt relish the idea of having new visitors to their site, have bent over backwards to be accomodating, and no doubt hope that the whole (relatively) massive influx of new faces creates more business overall for their operation, but ironically enough, some of the regulars over there might view (or at least fear) the massive BNBB immigration the way the BNBB people viewed Norah Jones - as the beginning of the end for their thing, and a chance to be sold out. Ya' never know.....
  9. All the more reason not to use them!
  10. Well, I made a post, as did several others, to the "Innovation" thread on AAJ, and got this "the BN Bunch seems to be missing something" response, which is understandable enough, and can maybe be worked through, but hey - if I'm forever to be stigmatized as a memeber of the "Blue Note Bunch" without being able to discuss ideas on their own merit, well, then that's not going to be any place I want to be at. Believe it or not, I had to "prove" myself at Blue Note too. I posted for about 6 weeks, I think, before ever getting ANY kind of response, and it wasn't until Lon and I got into a prolonged and intense, but totally civil and intellegent, disagreement over the Blue Note "avant-garde" that I think anybody of substance over there began to take me seriously and welcome me into the community. Lon and I have since become great cyber-friends - we know each other's tastes and play to the similarities. But I was just one guy, not 1000! I'd LIKE to think that once those of us who want serious discussion "prove" ourselves to the natives at AAJ that it'll be cool, but you just never know... I'm still liking this place for overall attitude and the fact that it's a "ground floor" community.

    Eddie Baccus

Well, if anybody would or COULD do it, it would be Rahsaan, he of the gifts far beyond mortal men. But seriously, Baccus was from, where, Cleveland? Toledo? Somewhere in Ohio...same as Rahsaan. Interesting to hear the common linkage there, maybe sort of a regional dialect of sorts. You don't hear that today as much as you once did.
  12. You guys actually USE headlights?
  13. If the penis enlargement spam and the septic cleaning spam came from the same company, I'd be VEEEEEERY afraid to call a plumber next time you had a clogged septic tank. He might be bringin' a NEW kind Roto-Rooter to do the job....
  14. Self-service checkout is the hippest thing for personal lifestyle liberation since the Walkman. We've had it for a cuppla years at our Kroger (a Union store, btw, hmmmmm....). I'm outta there at least 50% faster on all but the biggest purchases.
  15. My "Pilgrims Landing On Plymouth Rock - Take 2" thread title on AAJ was not meant humorously (well, ok, it was, a LITTLE ). There was already a small but entrenched group with their own style over there, and from what I can see, a few of them are warmly interacting, but lot of them are steering clear of the BN transplants. There's not that many of them relative to us, but I can maybe see the potential for some real clique warfare developing eventually. This place, otoh, is virgin soil, made for BNers by a BNer. Don't underestimate that.
  16. I'm here. I'll be here, and some of the other sites as well. I've been VERY busy at home the last few days, besides following the BNBB diaspora. Honestly, I don't know that I'll be posting anywhere w/the frequency I did at BN, simply because of some non-emergency-but-still-important personal matters coming up (nothing major, just important). But B-3'er is a fellow player, and to me, that gives him an edge from jump street. I WILL be around!
  17. Hi sheldon. Yeah, I dug the book quite a bit actually. I can see where the style might bug some people, but realistically, it's the best widely available source of firsthand recollections about Mingus, and if the zeitgeist didn't mind being felt, who am I to complain?

    Ronnie Cuber

Ronnie was a total screaming BITCH of a player w/Maynard & the Smith/Benson band. I've got a Swingtime Video of him playing w/Lionel Hampton's Big Band in the mid-60s, and this muthaphukker is ROCK-ING, let me tell you! Looks to be about 8 feet tall, weighing about 75 pounds, fingers the length of windshield wipers, and just playing the groovinest shit you'll want to hear. He was working a lot of Latin gigs in the 70s, right? He's on some Eddie Palmieri sides on Coco ca.74 or so. I think he kinda mellowed out after some years in the studios and such, but his early stuff is the real deal!
  19. Not to sidetrack the thread, but what's the deal w/Joe Thomas? Isn't/wasn't he called "The Ebony Godfather"? Is this the same cat that played tenor w/Lunceford? Couldn't be, could it?
  20. I'm VERY fond of Lucky's Groove Merchant sides (is COOK COUNTY the McGriff side you refer to, Jim? There were two others.) , his last before his "disappearance". Very mellow-yet-deep stuff.

    Eddie Baccus

This is a really wack idea, and I seriously doubt it could possibly be true, but some of Baccus' licks sound a LOT like Rahsaan's. Dorthaan Kirk wrote the liners, and I think Rahsaan produced the date for Smash (a Mercury subsidiary) during the time when he himselfwas signed to Mercury. I have a temptation every time I hear it (and I like it a bit more than y'all) to think that it's Rahsaan doing an organ record under a pseudonym! No way that could be, but it WOULD be sort of a Kirk-esque thing to do, no?
  22. Gary Puckett and the Union Gap made truly unforgettable music. Unfortunately.
  23. Say Jim (can I call you B-3er, cause if I call you Jim, it seems like I'm talking to myself, and I do enough of that as it is...), I've been meaning to ask you for quite a while - you got that McGriff album he did w/Junior Parker that's got that killer version of "In The Heat Of The Night" on it?
  24. Legal ramifications dude... But make it a "members only" forum, with age verification and all that good stuff, and... GOD - WHAT AM I SAYING? I REALLY AM A WHORE!!!!!
  25. Geez, I feel like SUCH a whore - from BN to AAJ, and now hanging here on the ground floor. Where's the shower? :D:D:D Seriously Jim - you're a player, a darn good one too, and that's a BIG plus for me. Get this puppy fully formatted and functional, and I'll do some serious hanging here. I make it a priority to look out for my own, and even if we don't play the same "style" of jazz, we both play JAZZ, "styles" be damned. Make this thing right (and I know you will) & I'm here.
