  1. You're welcome, and as always, thanks for playing!
  2. I don't. Does that guy? I do know a few people who do, though.
  3. Sounds like an almost finished mix with a guide part for the horn arranger?

  8. when in doubt, look for the GarthHead.
  9. Yeah, my first reaction was that the newer versions were looser (not in a good way) and maybe lacked a certain urgency. But that impression didn't last, it evolved. Nobody plays like old people except old people, especially in matters of section playing. Basie's bands proved that, as did Ellington's, in the other direction. Big bands are tricky that way.
  10. Not a bad idea to have a fresh familiarity with the originals on the older items, imo.
  11. From EVERYTHING I've heard, Betty Carter was DEEP into the moment. She always had young bands and had no compunctions about schooling them on the stand. Not verbally, but through stuff like looks and gestures. When she wanted to go somewhere, she wanted to go there RIGHT NOW, if you know what I mean. And when you got there, she would also let you know with her looks. It wasn't a gig for the easily-bruised sorts, but jesus, you could not get a better schooling, imo. Look at who all came up through her bands. I have every bit of respect for a leader who operates like that. No bullshit or halfstepping of otherwise tolerating less than GETTING THERE. As Serious As Your Life indeed, totally.
  12. I find enough interest in Russell's Soul Note records to have bought the box, and without regret. As far as this band goes, the earlier released New York Big Band is a real treat, imo, circling back on some earlier pieces played in new(ish) ways. I also don't listen to George Russell albums the same way I do a lot of other "jazz" albums, simply because yes, he was totally "jazz", but he also had his own aims, his own concerns that were his and his alone. So that's what I give him, because lord knows he proved himself more than worthy of getting it.

It's been literally 45 or so years since the last time I listened to it, but what I remember liking about it was the seemingly in-depth arranging/composing, almost like a fusion band in that regard. Of course, my memory today kinda auto-equates that to ponderous and overbearing, so....not gonna temp fate, just gonna let that one be.
  14. Was this the DC club that I saw Betty Carter in ca. 1981? Seems like it was? If it wasn't called Jazz Alley, then this was it. I can guarantees you that no matter how intense the fire was, it would not be as intense as the glares that Betty Carter was giving her band that night. I was sitting behind the band and saw every one of them.
  15. That would have been cool.
  16. Oh! Alternate covers for the Collectors! Not nearly as A&M/CTI as the original/main cover.
  17. Bull Stopper - Takin' It Home!!!
  18. This is a really good record.
  19. There were people doing it pre-bop, at least on record dates. For "modern" jazz, though, Mulligan was the first such group that got attention called to itself.
