I have to wonder if those being on ECM directly, with no WATT imprint has any implications...
  2. Taken seriously, it's largely delightful.

I'm getting into her last three trio records on ECM. They're self-described "chamber music" and very much the work of a composer New material, as well as revisiting of old (including two from Night-Glo!). She's very much got her own thing, more than ever, and a group with which to do it. Above all else, she is a composer. If, God forbid, these are the last records she makes, it will have been a triumphant last statement.

It's easy listening, but in no way easy music.
  5. This and The Loadstar were the first times I heard the "later" Max Roach and it knocked me on my ass, the power and the clarity of purpose, musical and otherwise

I think it's a great record in every way.

  9. Quite a trio this turned out to be!
  10. That's a pretty underwhelming lineup...does it meet expectations?
  11. Anybody remember the Trip issue of this? Anyway, the OG is clearly listed as Tootie's date. Here's hoping that this reissue carries the original gatefold cover and the liner essay by Amiri Baraka. Anything less is exploitation of the names minus the context. We've had enough of that already https://www.discogs.com/release/1257682-Kuumba-Toudie-Heath-Kawaida As for Mtume's role...both Jimmy and Albert were into the Black Nationalism thing to no small degree. It's not like Mtume was off all by himself and found this, it was in the family, and you can damn well believe that economic self- sufficiency, both coming into it and then going out from it, was a driving force. Don Schlitten gave us a very filtered glimpse of kinda a bit of this, but Don Schlitten was never going to have an Amiri Braka liner essay to explain it so we could all understand, in plain English.
  12. Where'd he get those pants?

  17. Another Jackie with long legs. Long, but not skinny.
  18. Paul Weston I respect the hell out of. But at this point....not for me. That video sounds like it was a good band and a goof gig, though.
  19. So this will be with full orchestra? Conducted by...? Nelson Riddle, maybe? Not really interested if not. But if....maybe.
  20. Depends on who you ask, but it seems to fall under some variant on the Motherfucker Let It All Go To An Already Big Head And Then That Head Finally Just Went And Blew Up And Made A Mess Like This theory.
